“Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

Stumbled across this gem on the internet. It is in a beautiful location with lovely views, best admired sitting outside with a pint of local brew before going into dinner. The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, they all made us feel very welcome. The rooms were perfect for our needs. Very comfortable and quiet. Very good breakfast, tasty and generous. We arrived on a Monday. It's the only day that the restaurant is closed, but Colleen gave us good recommendations locally and organised a taxi for us. The rest of our stay we used the restaurant in the hotel. Could not fault the menu, food or service. The hotel is ideally located for the Snowdonia region being central to many places. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. If you stay there and don't enjoy the visit you must be Victor Meldrew.

Room Tip: I think there are only eight bedroom, but they are all in a good location.

My husband and I and a couple of friends chose this hotel from internet information - including TA - so it was a 'stab in the dark' as none of us live locally. We fell on our feet.

The hotel is in a secluded location with stunning views over the Snowdonia national park and the Afon Dwyryd estuary. It takes some nerve to continue down what seems a never-ending track to the hotel from the main road between Penrhyndeudraeth and Beddgelert but the hotel is quiet and peaceful and if the weather is good, you could sit and watch the view for hours with a glass of local Porthmadog-brewed beer, and if not, enjoy the same in the snug with its coal stove radiating comforting heat. We experienced this latter firsthand because it rained cats and dogs during part of our stay!!

We were warmly welcomed by Colleen the owner, and her cheerfulness and 'can do' attitude was reflected by every member of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble, and we were made to feel at home very quickly.

Our rooms, 6 and 7, were spacious with lovely views, plenty of hot water and good baths as well as showers, plenty of storage space and comfortable beds. Our accommodation needs were perfectly met.

We found the breakfasts very tasty and generous, in particular the locally sourced bacon and sausages, with bottomless tea and coffee and cheerful and attentive waiting staff.

We arrived on a Monday evening which was the one night that the restaurant is closed. Colleen had warned us of this in advance but had details of several local restaurants and pubs that were serving food that night. We took up her suggestion of the banquet at Sima's Indian Restaurant on the High Street in Porthmadog (Sunday to Tuesday, prebooking obligatory) and had a fantastically high quality meal at an almost unbelievably low price, which we recommend to anyone arriving on a Monday ...

We opted to eat at the hotel on the two following nights. The chef couldn't put a foot wrong! Delicious meals - the lamb chops were succulent, the sea bass and trout fresh and juicy, and as for the duck ... heavenly - with generous portions of fresh vegetables and grattan sides, a local speciality of leeks in cheese sauce ... how much more Welsh can you get!! The wine list went well with the dishes offered and the prices were very reasonable.

A previous poster mentioned a wait for dinner. As all dishes are freshly cooked to order this seems only reasonable; we never had to wait more than 15 minutes, and this passed very quickly with a schooner of Tio Pepe sherry. I cannot speak highly enough of the charming waitresses, who did their best to make the meal service efficient but never rushed, and who coped well with a couple of guests for whom English was not their first language.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Brynllydan to visitors seeking clean and comfortable accommodation with genuinely friendly and capable owners. This is not a 5* hotel and makes no pretence of being such. If you want a clean bed, a comfortable room and good food, this would suit you well. (However if you want a bed turndown service, internet hookup in your room or a spa, look elsewhere! )

The hotel is very well placed for visiting Portmeirion and taking the Welsh Highland and Bleaenau Ffestiniog railways and as a home base or a staging point on a walking or cycling holiday. I would not hesitate to come here again for quality, friendliness and honest pricing.

The welcome was warm and friendly. The room was compact but very clean with a comfy bed, extra blankets if required and a really light and spacious bathroom.

Breakfast was perfect, with offers of extra toast and tea etc and a really good way to start the day.

Dinner was amazing, having read some reviews, we decided to have dinner on the second night. The service was attentive, the food was of a 5 star standard with delicious trout and local lamb - and the dessert was top class too.

Recommend this hotel to family, friends and complete strangers - It is everything you could possibly want from a secluded hotel with spectacular views of the Snowdonia National Park.

Room Tip: Room 1 had perfect views of the Welsh Hills

We stayed for three nights and enjoyed every minute. The access lane had us a little confused as you cannot imagine it leads to a hotel but when you arrive it is well worth it. The location is superb, the views are outstanding and the welcome warm.
Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it was always full and the menu looked appealing.
Rooms were comfortable and well presented with everything you would expect.
All in all a great stay and I wouldn't hesitste in returning or recommending this hotel.

From the minute you arrive until you leave all the staff make you welcome and cannot do enough for you. The rooms are excellant, very clean and comfortable. The gardens and view of Snowdon add to the relaxing feel but best of is to come, the food is the best I ever had in hotels and having been to many hotels in my 40 years of travel I mean what I say.
A great location for Snowdonia and surrounding area but lets hope the post office gives them their own post code like many I finished up in a farm yard. If i am ever in the area again I shall return. Thank you for a great two days.

An incredible view on the valley and the Snodown. However, it stops there. If you are a couple, all the rooms have a view. If you are with your son, you will have a room with twin beds, the view is on the back, on the trash cans. In restaurant, service is pitiful. First evening, we waited 40 minutes before giving up and leaving the restaurant. The door between the restaurant and the kitchen possesses a glass door. We could see the cook and the waiters spirit to joke while we waited. When we demanded, the boss did not know what we had ordered. The same matter for the breakfast, on July 16th, we waited about 25 minutes before we serve us. I noted that premises are better served than the tourists

Hi, thank you for your comments. Firstly, allocation of rooms is strictly based on availability and type of room requested, rather than personal circumstances.

The rear view is not over trash cans (bins) - they are positioned in the car park, away from any rooms. Occasionally a small bottle bin is located near the back door for ease of use. Apologies for this and we have now instructed all staff to not leave bottle trays around the rear of the property. We have also created a small garden at the rear with a stoned area and potted shrubs and plants creating a much nicer view than when you stayed.

Regarding the service, the complaint was about the length of time from ordering the food to receiving the food, rather than being ignored for 40 minutes. A member of staff took the food order and there was a slight delay due to the dishes being freshly cooked to order. When asked by the customer where the food was I went straight to the kitchen, where the food was plated up ready to be served. Unfortunately the customer left the hotel before I was able to return to the table with the food. We did not charge the customer for the food, despite him ordering the food and leaving without waiting for a response to his query.

I don't understand the comment regarding the chef and the glass door, apologies if the glass window caused any offense.

Nobody waits 25 minutes for breakfast, even at the busiest times, so I must assume this is an error in your timekeeping.

Thank you for your comments, please be assured we have actioned the areas (glass trays and view at the rear) where we feel we have not met your expectations and can improve our facilities for future guests.

Just returned from 3 nights at this little gem of a hotel tucked away in a totally private and undisturbed part of this stunning Snowdonian landscape. Perfectly placed for visiting Portmeirion, Portmadog and further afield. Staff were lovely, made everyone feel so welcome and couldn't do enough for us. Rooms are it has to be said, a little dated but decent sized and spotless, were told they are being upgraded one by one by Colleen the owner. The real winner for this hotel is the food, fabulous full english made with top quality local produce and a dinner menu to rival the best restaurants. Have to say the meal's were huge, again using top quality produce and cooked to perfection all with perfectly cooked vegetables. Non residents are frequent users of the restaurant. To sum up a fantastic hotel in an unbeatable location - but do go with an empty stomach!

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbed room if possible.

Hi, thank you for your lovely comments regarding the food and location.

The room refurbishments are ongoing and 5 rooms are planned for full refurbishment this winter, as well as significant improvements across all rooms.

For future guests please be assured all rooms are clean, tidy and fully functional. Most of the comments we receive are regarding the colour (green) of some of the bathroom suites and old-fashioned en-suite light fixtures. This is being addressed in a continuous refurbishment program.
