“Major ripoff stay away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2011

this place is way over priced and lacks any worthy information which can't be found at Mt. Rushmore. They have a cheezy movie and a few old relics from the carving of the mountain. Gift shop is over priced normal tourist junk. Not worth the time, effort or money. Typical tourist trap with nothing of value to offer. VERY VERY BORING...

“What a rip off!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2011

For the money you pay to go through this very small museum you can read a small hand book and get more info about Borglum and his story. When you come out of the museum it directs you to a stoe were everything is way over priced.Don't waist your money.

“Find a coupon for this museum, very interesting information”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2010

We received a half off coupon from the Rushmore Express and I would have been disappointed if we paid full price. The museum had displays that were behind glass, and at the beginning we were given headphones and electronic devices to dial in the number of the display. There was also a theater area for a short interesting movie. The museum is very interesting for adults but small children would not appreciate it. We were not allowed to photograph any items. This is a private museum, with no state funding.

“A Great stop before you go to Mt Rushmore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2009

Get the background on Mt Rushmore before you visit. This is a nice museum with tons of information. A self guided audio tour is great in case you wish to listen to a section more than once.

“Very Informative about Mount Rushmore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2005

We visited this museum on our recent vacation to Mount Rushmore. I wanted the kids to understand the story behind the monument, and this museum does a good job explaining the history of the sculptor, as well as how he did the monument.
The museum has several 'windows' of exhibits; you can move at your own pace, as you take a 'wandstick' that verbally explains each exhibit to you. The museum is large and can take quite a while to see everything; I could see that my kids were getting restless after awhile, so we ended up rushing through some of the later exhibits. There is a nice film at the end that shows some of the footage of the actual making of Mount Rushmore - it is a highlight of the museum and not to be missed.
My only complaint - which is why I didn't give this an "Excellent" - is that the wandsticks are hard to listen to sometimes; if you don't hold them just right, they can be hard to hear, and you miss some of the story. Also, there is a LOT of stuff in each window - almost too much - so at times I felt overwhelmed with information.
The picture I attached is a famous sculpture done by Guston Borglum - that is out front of the museum - it is of Abraham Lincoln, and kids are welcome to sit on his knee for a picture.
