Description: Pamir is the name of a mountainous area in Central Asia mainly in Afghanistan once along the route of Marco Polo’s Silk Road and also inhabited by descendants of Alexander the Great’s troops. The region’s cuisine was fortunate to inherit many exotic spices and flavors of Central Asia and its surrounding countries with influence from the Far East, Middle East, Mediterranean and Russia. Pamir Restaurant was originally opened in NYC in 1979 and has maintained the same family ownership and great recipes. Enjoy a taste of our history!

“Excellent Afgani Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2008

When I asked my hubby "If you could only eat 1 meal everyday for the rest of your life, what would it be?" His answer "Norange Palaw from Pamir". Having never been there I did not appreciate his answer, however I have since been twice and can understand why he made that choice. The food is absolutely delicious (desserts to die for!). The service is impeccable. The atmosphere is very nice. I cannot say enough about this authentic ethnic restaurant and highly recommend it.

“never would have guessed...”

never would have guessed I'd like this, since I don't usually go for middle east or indiean food, but it was actually pretty good.

“Superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2005

James Beard was once asked to make suggestions for a terrible meal. For the vegetable he chose peas and carrots. The great American chef couldn't figure out why anybody thought it would be good to mix those two. Mr. Beard obviously never ate in the Pamir. They managed to mix in some hamburger (I guess it was hamburger) and some exotic spice or two and make it quite special. For all I know the cook got the idea for peas and carrots from a can in an American supermarket but I am reasonably confident the food in general was authentic Afghani.

This was only the second time we ate in any Afghani restaurant and both were excellent. The food is somewhat similar to Indian and more especially Pakistani without the heat.

We had the moderately priced buffet with some difficulty (as you perhaps noticed) figuring out what we were eating. The waiter spoke a minimum of English. He agreed with my wife the "bananas" were bananas in a sauce. They weren't. They were plantain as confirmed by the cashier.
