“Upscale hotel, extremely comfortable beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2009

We stayed at this hotel as a stop-over at the beginning of our summer vacation. This was our second time staying at a Hilton Garden Inn. We appreciated the consistency of the layout of the lobby and elevators. Everything was in the same place and that's comforting when visiting a new place. The staff attentiveness was hit-or-miss. Some were excellent, others mediocre at best.

The room was very tastefully decorated. Very clean. My wife found a book while checking under the bed for belongings of ours; read it on the trip, loved it.

TVs are great, great channel line-up. The ergonmic chair at the desk is truly ergonomic; not like some of the other hotels out there that place a plain old black pleather chair at the desk with one adjustment lever! This chair was super customizable.

Very quiet rooms.

We did notice that there was a consistent problem with glasses and other tableware being left in the corridors near doors to guestrooms. Several times upon leaving and returning we noticed the same glasses, etc. in the same place as when we left. Didn't bother us, but we noticed it.

Pool seemed a little small for the size of the hotel.

Had to wait at the front desk for a few minutes at check out, not a big deal for us.

We stayed here August 15-17, 2008 to visit family who recently moved to Charles Town, WV. Great hotel, great location. Both the guest and public rooms at the hotel were extremely clean (and quiet). The lobby area was beautiful and the pool area was perfect (no lifeguard but if you saw my review of the HGI at BWI, we were glad not to see one) with access to an outdoor patio with chairs. The coffee and tea were always filled by the front desk along with cookies in the evening hours. There was a wedding at the hotel Saturday afternoon and the only time we ever saw or heard any of the guests was at breakfast in the morning. I felt bad for the staff since they were slammed with people all at once both Saturday and Sunday morning. To order anything at breakfast took a bit of time but you have to expect it when all the tables fill up at once. Great breakfast and excellent omelets and pancakes! Great wait and cooking staff as well!
This hotel provided a great end to our family vacation. We will be staying again when visiting the family!

  • Liked — Great staff and rooms!
  • Disliked — The wedding parties need to scatter their arrival at breakfast better!

The Hilton Garden Inn is a new and well-appointed property just south of Frederick on I-270. As a reasonably-priced and comfortable stop on the corridor to either Baltimore or Washington, we found it to be a great choice for travelers in this area. Complaints about getting exactly what was booked seem to hold some water, though. Read on for more...

LOCATION:
The property is a relatively new hotel located a couple of minutes off I-270, just one major exit south of the I-70/I-270 split. It is within a 2 minute drive of a shopping center with plenty of food, shopping and entertainment options. It has easy accessibility to either Interstate.

ROOMS:
Rooms on one side of the building (the "even numbered" side) are mini-suites with a bedroom, a bathroom in the middle, and a sitting/living room nearest the door. Rooms across the hall appeared to be standard hotel-style rooms. The room was clean and spacious. Everything has that "new hotel smell", so things are in very good condition. One point to note is that the beds are very firm, so those with back problems will probably love them, while those used to softer mattresses will feel like they're sleeping on a stone floor!

AMENITIES:
The hotel offers complimentary Internet, though we had to use the wired connection as the wireless seemed to have very little signal in our room. The hotel offers breakfast for $9.99 in the lobby restaurant. If you have to eat in, it looked pretty good, but with ample non-hotel dining options within a few minutes of the hotel, we opted to move on. There seemed to be plenty of parking, even when we returned to the hotel after midnight. The hotel has a Pool, a Fitness Center, a refrigerator and microwave in the room, a business center with printer, and a guest laundry. Hours on the pool are fairly standard, but not as late as we'd ever like them to be, closing at 10PM.

STAFF:
The front desk staff was friendly and helpful on the night shift, and we were given a junior suite instead of the standard King we booked, for a Friday night. Since I'm not HHonors elite or anything, this is a little odd and may anecdotally back up some other travelers' complaints about not getting the room type requested. I shouldn't complain about spontaneous upgrades, but can say that as a frequent traveler, an un-asked for and un-earned upgrade late on a Friday night does suggest that they may have had a capacity issue with the room type reserved. The hotel was very full, and there were at least two wedding parties we observed in the lobby on Saturday AM.

In general, we had no problems with our stay and found the HGI Frederick to be a good stop for the night on our trip to the DC area. At a fraction of the cost of hotels in either DC or Baltimore, you'll likely get your money's worth here. Solid 3-star hotel.

  • Liked — Convenient location, new facility
  • Disliked — Poor wireless, unenthusiastic dining options.

There seems to be a complete disconect between what you book with Hilton's central reservation office and what you receive.

We had booked, and paid for and received confirmation on a King suite. Upon arrival, we were notified that we were now placed in a room with two Queens.

While the front desk staff tried to resolve the problem, the hotel was overbooked by at least 50% and some of our guest had to stay at other nearby hotels.

Management here seemed not only indifferent, but would not tell the truth as to why promises for resolutions changed several times during the day.

We are receiving charges on our credit cards without having received billing statements and the manager will not return telephone calls and corporate will not get involved.

I would reccommend that if you are looking to book rooms for an event, go elsewhere.

The Hilton Garden Inn Frederick is the newest hotel on the block and very beautiful. The rooms and amenities are quite nice. However, the management of the hotel will give you a headache. I booked my wedding block there and came to find out they booked 3 more for the same weekend afterwards. They overbooked the hotel. They actually bumped me (the bride), the groom, and several of our wedding party. They gave out our guest bags to another wedding block staying there. The General Manager kept leaving the property so as not to have to deal with all of the angry guests. My brother tracked him down and made him comp our rooms, which he still charged our credit cards for afterwards. A month later, several guests have been receiving charges on their credit cards, with no receipts or bills provided to them. This hotel is a disaster. Do yourself a favor and stay at one of the many other Frederick hotels or B&Bs.

  • Liked — it is new and very nice
  • Disliked — everything that could have gone wrong did. The General Manager is completely incompetent

We stayed here for a night as we were attending a wedding in the area. We expected it to be nice as we had read TA's reviews and they were pretty good. It was even better than I expected.

The hotel is modern, clean and totally comfortable. The bed was a delight with white duvet covers that were as freshly washed as the sheets. This is the first time I have stayed at a hotel that I have not had to remove the bedspread from the bed.

Granite fixtures in the bathroom, good water pressure, flat screen TV and good AC made the room a pleasure. I couldn't believe we had paid about $110 a night for such a nice room!

Service was excellent. We needed to check in early to get ready for the wedding and they accommodated this with no problem.

Flawless performance, would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend. Our experience was terrific.
The hotel is located in an area that is convenient to plenty of gas stations, restaurants, stores, and local highways, however, it is still set back far enough to offer seclusion.

The front desk staff was very personable and helpful. The room was spacious, attractive, and well-furnished, including a fridge/microwave unit, large desk and comfortable desk chair, and high-def TV. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept on. The bathroom had a curved shower curtain rod and variable shower head; and it was brightly lit and had room to move around, unlike many hotel bathrooms that are tiny and poorly lit. The room was spotless on arrival, and housekeeping did a fine job thoughout our stay. The rates were very reasonable for such a great new hotel.

I will definitely stay here again whenever I come back to Frederick, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.
