Owner description: This key Civil War battlefield marked the last push north by Confederates in 1864. Although it's seen as a confederate victory, this advance on Washington, D.C. was brought to a hault by the forces led by Major General Lew Wallace, U.S. Army.

“Self-drive battlefield tour plus ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

A very easy self-driven tour around a very significant - yet almost anonymous - battlefield (The battle that saved Washington). The visitor center is first class (don't miss the interactive battlefield map). The two staff members were extraordinarily helpful

“Great Day Trip For Summer Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Loaded up the car with my son and his friends and had a great day! My son had been there on a field trip with his class and really wanted to go back.

“Nice Battlefield but Suffers from being Close to Antietam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

We visited Monocacy on a weekend in June 2012 but all of the Ranger programs for the day were cancelled as most of the staff and volunteers were at Antietam for some activities related to the 150th anniversary of that battle even though it occurred on September 17th. Nevertheless, we did enjoy our visit to this battle field where General Lew Wallace, the future author of Ben-Hur, fought a delaying engagement the "saved Washington". The battlefield is certainly not the scale of Antietam or Gettysburg (also not too far) or with nearly as many monuments but still interesting with an excellent museum on the second floor of the visitor center. Well worth a half day visit.

“Nie place to visit but small”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

The Monocacy Naional Battlefield building is relatively small for museum but had some interesting displays. The fields themselves are self guided and broken into different areas. Great place to take the kids.

“Small but Good Visitors Center”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The Monocacy National Battlefield is worth a visit, if you are truly interested in the Civil War. No, it is not Gettysburg or Antietam, but you will learn how the Union held off the Confederate advance here in 1864, and in the end saved Washington by giving the VI Corps more time to reinforce the capital. If you only have time for the Visitors Center, you will find it interesting. But if you have more time, walk the battlefield itself.
