“Excellent new restuarant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Brand new restaurant on Frederick's revived east side. Small plate Mediterranean inspired cuisine, similar in concept but not in selection to its sister restaurant Isabella's.
It seems that the chef was given the opportunity to create a fabulous menu and he truly succeeded as the food is wonderful. The service was also attentive without being overbearing.
I have been there three times in the last month with family and friends and have thoroughly enjoyed everything ordered. Consider the Istanbul spread sampler as it is a great appetizer. The pide's were great, and especially enjoyed the souvlaki skewer.

“It's new, it's great -- GO!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We had a completely enjoyable dinner at Ayse (pronounced EYE-shah, I believe) on a very busy Saturday evening, and will definitely hope to return. Turkish and Greek cuisines are the order of the day, with the two traditions (simiiar in any event) complementing each other in nifty ways.

The place is newly-opened; in fact I believe they still have yet to do their official grand opening, which means that some menu items are being swapped out for others, in just one or two cases. But overall the food was *fantastic* -- surprising tastes and textures in dish after dish -- and the small-plates options (you can also order full-sized dishes) makes it possible to share and try a wide range of items. Great taramasalta, some amazingly good lavosh, superb saganaki, and much else just lit up the place -- they were that good. Even the humble rice pilaf had a surprising variety of fruity tastes. Good wines at a wide range of prices were a welcome note, too -- you can spend a lot on a bottle or (as we did) have a fine dry Greek white for a very reasonable tab.

One really good sign, in my view, was that Nehzi, the owner, was visible everywhere, giving guests a warm welcome, picking up the slack when the servers got busy, making sure everyone was having a fine dinner. The restaurant is named after his late mother, and I can't help thinking she would find it a wonderful tribute.

The place is located in a nicely-restored area of old commercial and industrial buildings -- lots of craft shops around, for example -- called Everedy Square. Large windows, high ceilings, and a general clean-and-modern atmosphere make the establishment all the more attractive. Service, even on a really busy evening, was well-organized; be aware that it proceeds at a kind of Mediterranean pace, which means you'll spend a bit more time at Ayse than at some other places, but that is time to converse (noise levels were lively but agreeable) and savor the dishes. For those wanting a quicker meal, or a smaller tab, ordering just a few items might make sense; I'll bet the place is great for lunch for that reason.

Free parking is available behind the restaurant, in a common area for the craft shops etc.; drive through the archway off East Street and you're there.

We do not get to Frederick often -- this was on a trip to Northern Va -- but when/if we do, Ayse will be at the top of our list.

“Great food, great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

The ambiance and food at this restaurant are excellent. The service was fantastic. The wine list is unique and affordable! I had lunch here with friends and a big dinner party the following week here and both meals were fantastic. The small plates are great as well as the burger and fries. There is something for everyone here! The brussel sprouts are amazing!

“First visit to Ayse Meze”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Walking into Ayse Meze for the first time was like a breath of fresh air. The whole space just had a light and airy feel and the sunflower on each table was a nice touch. This was my first visit but I cannot wait to return. We started with a spread sampler which was a tasting of all 6 spreads that they offer. My favorites on the sampler were the Tzatziki, Gemlik Zeytin (a black olive spread similiar to a tapenade) and Pasa Ezmesi. Next we had the Saganaki which was a flaming cheese. I really enjoyed this dish but there was 3 of us so it was a bit of a stretch for us all to share so I would suggest if you have more than 3 people that you order more than one. We also enjoyed the sea scallops (Xtema) and wished we had placed 2 orders instead of one. The souvalki was also really good and the lamb was cooked perfectly. We ordered the house mix olives which we also enjoyed but they are a little on the spicy side. We did not do quite as well on picking desserts, we tried the Keskul (almond milk pudding) & the cookies- they weren't bad it just didn't really bring it home for me. I did however enjoy the turkish coffee. Next time I'm going to try one of the ice cream/sorbets. Service was great, prices were reasonable and I look forward to many more delicious meals in the future at Ayse Meze.
