“Easy Passenger Car Access”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

Rainbow Basin is just outside Barstow and offers easy access to regular passenger cars and it appears there are additional opportunities for those with more rugged vehicles and those that are hiking/camping. We spent a good 2+ hours driving and stopping and taking pictures and really enjoyed it. The colors reminded us of Artist's Palette in Death Valley. This is a good side trip in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, especially if you're splitting the drive and spending one night in Barstow.

“Stay at Owl Canyon Campground in the Natural Area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

The BLM has a very nice campground in this Natural Area, called Owl Canyon Campground.

Sites are only $6 as of this date, and it rarely fills. It often has a host, but doesn't currently have water. Each site has a grill and a firepit, and a ramada for shade. Sites are pretty big, but you can also get some privacy. There's even a mini playground for kids. Pit toilets. You can pretty much hike all over the place, and if you're lucky you'll spot some of the fossils that the area is known for.

Although the area is desert, it can also get quite cold in the winter months, so be prepared. Elevaton is 3000', and there are 30 sites.

“Motocross ride to basin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

This is a really cool place to see that most folks will never take the time to visit. It's a must to take the time and walk through some of the formations

“Rainbow basin is a good outdoors site for exploring.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

My family has hiked there a lot. All kinds of nooks and carnies for exploring the hidden canyons. And the geological layering make beautiful scenery.

“Worth the trip to see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

The colour and variations of rock formations throughout the loop are outstanding. Will visit again sometime in the future. Only one disappointment, some fools had smashed beer bottles around viewing area 4 creating a hazard for visitors especially young children and dogs.
