“Great remodel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2006

We decided to stop in Barstow on our way to visit our son in Las Vegas. This looks like a brand-new motel, but the young man at the registration desk told us that in fact it's 13 years old and has recently undergone a facelift and remodel. We asked for a quiet location, since so many big rigs were also stopping for the night, and were given possibly the quietest room we've ever had, on the 3rd floor facing away from the front of the motel and the street. There are elevators here, so we didn't have to lug our suitcases up 3 flights of stairs. The pool area looked beautiful and inviting, although we didn't use it this time. There are lots of fast-food places nearby, and for breakfast there are a few restaurants, including Denny's, just across the overpass. The Pilot station right next to the motel not only had a Dairy Queen inside, but also had gas for 40¢ per gallon cheaper than the gas station just on the other side of the freeway.
The room itself was a good size, not huge but not crowded. It had a desk, combo fridge/microwave, an interesting headboard with built-in nightstands on both sides, a granite countertop on the vanity, and one of those wonderful bowed shower-curtain rods. The mattress was very comfortable and we got a great night's sleep. I didn't find the Kleenex (looking for a box or a built-in holder) until the next morning - it's a little travel packet, placed in a corner of the vanity. There were no little bottles of shampoo, etc. and no hair dryer, but at this price, who's complaining?! This is by far the nicest budget motel we've ever stayed in, and possibly also the cheapest - $55 total!
If we ever need to stop in Barstow again, this is definitely where we'll stay!

Nice and clean stop over motel on way to and from Grand Canyon, Zion and Vegas. The room on the 3rd floor was like new, whereas the 2nd floor room showed some wear. The pool was a nice treat in the desert. The rooms have a TV, microwave and frig. There is internet service by T-mobile with a charge if you need it. Soap, travel tissue pack, and plastic cups are the only other amenities. But for the price this place is a very nice bargain.

We read the reviews of other places in town with the problems of downtown (filth, assaults, burgulary, train noise) and the one review of this place. Gave it a try and was pleased. Being a mile away from the railroad tracks eliminated any noise from the trains and made for a peaceful night's sleep. No freeway noise with our courtyard room. Gas at the station next door is one of the cheapest in town (a plus in the summer of 2006). Lots of fast food at this exit (including a Tommy's!), but not too much selection for a real restaurant. The drive to town is only a few miles and gives a few more options. It's slim pickin's being in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

By staying in Barstow, it gave us a chance to visit the Calico Ghost Town just north on I-15. What a cute little treat from the Knott family (same family that owns Knott's Berry Farm theme park in So Cal, but this is nowhere near as developed as Buena Park). Interesting history of the area and there are craft shops where the kids can make leather or pottery creations to take home.

We definitely will stay here again if staying in Barstow.

For $51 per night (before tax, after tax was something like $56), this hotel is a great bargain. I stayed in a room that seemed remarkably new, as if it had been renovated within the past few months and was sparkling clean. Other than the fact that it doesn't have some of the extra amenities (no hair dryer, no shampoo, no coffee maker), it's really like staying at a much more expensive place. I've paid $200 a night for a hotel room that wasn't nearly in as good condition as this one.

My only complaints are that I could smell smoke at times (I think it was coming through the bathroom's ventilation system, because it didn't permeate the room all the time), and the two blankets on the bed didn't seem all that nice. The top one looked fine but I never trust those top covers to be clean, and the one beneath it, the one I'd normally use while sleeping, was a little shabby.

Anyway, Barstow is just a sleazy stop-through town on the way to Vegas, but staying here at the Red Roof Inn, at the outlet mall exit on the outskirts of town, is by far the best option if you have to stay anywhere. The crowd around this exit is mostly tourists from LA and truck drivers, and there is decent fast food all around the hotel, whereas if you stay in Barstow proper you have to deal with a seedier element in town.
