“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Firstly I guess I have to ask why some people go back here every year for decades (and they do).

The best thing I can say about this place is that the waiting staff in general try and make you feel special ... With some exceptions. Special recommendation goes to Pepe who is head waiter at the pool cafe at lunch time and main dining room in the evening. He definitely goes over and above the call of duty. Thanks Pepe!

Hotel reception staff very pleasant and helpful although I don't really like walking through the smoke exhaled by a male member of staff from reception as he stands by the front door smoking and then breaths smoke all over you when he answers your queries.

Be warned quite a few of the staff (waiting and bar ) have very little or no English and will disappear to find someone else who can speak better English than them. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Room was a Junior suite and was largish with the most uncomfortable chair and sofa bed I have sat on for a long time. The room is situated above the terrace restaurant which hosts all meals. This can make it susceptible to noise and we had to ask reception if they would quieter down some drunken French men who were swearing and shouting mid to late afternoon. I am amazed that no management were present on site or that the senior waiter on duty did not ask them to be quiet. After the receptionist spoke to them they toned it down a little but not a lot. A siesta lost that day.

Air con didn't work ever in the room even after asking for it to be fixed. Bathroom was the most weirdly lit with no light shining into the shower over bath area so you showered in the dark. Toilet though was lit like a stage show!

Beds were rock hard and not comfortable.

Food and menu was very limited. Set menu was a choice of one meat, one fish or one vegetarian. If you went to al a carte they only allowed you 20% against the bill. Make no mistake this hotel is there to make money out of you and they will do it any which way they can. Small bottle of water, or a coffee is €3.50!

Luckily Pepe was at hand to offer non menu listed items if the choice was not what we wanted...and it often wasn't.

Wine is expensive and far more so than Llafranc but a reasonable selection. The Cava is especially good.

Pool is lovely but not enough room or loungers for the amount of people staying there. We were reminded of 70's hotel were they packed them all in as small an area as possible. The pool attendant was brilliant and kept the area spotlessly clean and also the changing rooms.

Public rooms are bland and open and feel airless. Newspapers from around the world are available attached to long wooden poles. Maybe only a Brit would consistently rip the crossword puzzle off the back of the papers instead of asking for a photocopy copy?

There are no other cafes or restaurants close by so unless you pay for taxi (expensive) or walk or have a car you are stuck here. No beach as such and everywhere you go there are steep slopes or lots of steps. Walk to Tamariu and be warned there are over 700 steep steps up and down each way!

I guess this is either a place that you love and therefore keep going back or you visit once and move on.

Personally I think it is getting tired and is a downmarket 4*. Waiters in white jackets at night and enormous balloon glasses for a G & T don't quite help it reach the mark.

We will be one of those couples that won't return - not even for Pepe.

Room Tip: Difficult to do so as all the sea facing rooms are close to the Terrace cafe and there is often nois...

We had asked for and received a very quiet room. It was on the top floor, very spacious and with an incredible view. But it was rather stale in decor so we were not thrilled at first. That said, the Aigua Blava wins over even a reticent fan.

The staff is exceptionally pleasing in their manners, and the dining experience is greatly enhanced with a very professional group of servers and managers. They understand food allergies and are not only careful with what they serve, but offer lovely options. In my case, I must be gluten free, so I was delighted when they presented gluten free bread and pastries.

So our disappointment faded with each new and very pleasant experience and we have already resolved to return. We would ask for the same room and not bother to venture out in search of a better restaurant. How likely would it be to find another restaurant with that view and the ability to eat gluten free bread and pastries, all of which were excellent.

Room Tip: If you have no issues climbing stairs, get a room at the top for best view, most privacy and greates...

This hotel is exceptional. The staff are second to none the food is amazing and the accommodation is superb. The views to die for. My parents stayed here for their honeymoon 43 years and it's still as good as it's ever been. I love Chez Henri, the pool but my favourite thing is sitting on the terrace and watching the world go by in and out of the bay, from fishing boats to 50ft yachts. Worth a visit but please treat it with care as it's worth looking after.

Room Tip: The views are worth the extra cost

A wonderful spot on the Costa Brava. The front desk staff were extremely helpful with all of my questions and particularly when one member of the party had to leave quickly to respond to an emergency at home. I loved the breakfast although preferred the lattes from the waiter rather than the machine. Dinner was OK. Very accessible to walking trails and beaches. Many guests were from England.

Room Tip: The rooms looking over the ocean in the main building are spectacular especially during a full moon.

I've have been fortunate enough to be coming to this hotel for over 30 years and it is Costa Brava's best kept secret! I can't say enough good things about the hotel, location, staff and atmosphere - at the same time I don't want too many people to know about this place as it's very, very special just the way it is. Thank you for some very fond memories AB!

Stayed 4 nights in early May on a half board basis with friends for a short golfing break. We had not been here since 2010 and the welcome and service were as good as ever. Food was even better and nothing could be too much for the staff. Special mention for Luis who just keeps on going looking after everyone. Breakfast on the terrace was a bonus but having to carry coffee and tea to the table irritates me.
Our bedroom had a balcony overlooking the main hotel , gardens and cliff walk and was spacious and always clean.
Aigua Blava is a great family hotel with a large swimming pool.
A cracking hotel to which we will be going back.

Room Tip: Choose a bedroom with a view over the bay.

It is around 10 years since we last visited AB and the standards have remained as high as ever.

A high quality hotel, set in delightful gardens with excellent pool, very comfortable rooms, with stunning views, and most important, top level friendly service, lead in the restaurants by Luis, top man!

With very interesting menus, and a good sensibly price wine list, who could ask for more!

Room Tip: Ask for sea view.
