Serene three months of the year, Walden Pond is a crowded beach in summer. However, in every month the pond is used for sports, such as swimming and ice skating, or for hikes around its perimeter. The views are especially lovely in the fall. The places of Thoreau's cabin and pea patch are marked and a replica of his tiny cabin stands across the street at the entrance to the parking lot. There are several "monuments"--his farm, the library, the Institute--to Thoreau in Concord, but Walden Pond probably comes closest to the heart of the man and of his visitors.
