We were a bit disappointed by the hotel. Booking as a last chance room on Booking.com we arrived to discover less than 10% occupancy in this 70 room hotel. The first thing we noticed unfortunately on arrival to our first floor room was the 'nursing home' smell of odour neutraliser and underlying foistiness and a room shut up for a long time. The view over the sea from our balcony did a lot to overcome the disappointment as did the purchase of a sweet smelling room spray and leaving the patio door open! The beds were appallingly uncomfortable and we had to ask the non english speaking staff ( they google pigeon translations) for pillow cases for the somewhat dubious pillows. Towels are grey now and stained. We had none of our own so advice is to take some with you.
The hotel is NOT geared up to anything other than local Catalonian visitors. The staff who are few in numer speak no English so if like us you speak no Catalan or Spanish it is very diffiuclt to communicate. All but Catalan language pages have been removed from the hotel brochure and instructions. There are no fire instructions in any other language. The only multiple language item is the do not disturb door hanger. Menus are in Catalan, we were lucky to eat the only dinner we had there with Catalan people and so knew what we were getting.
Dinner was very good and served with speed. The staff wanted to close the restaurant and so we ate our dessert in a darkened room with the main course not cleared. There was no air conditioning in the restaurant. A set menu came in at 16 euros, but take care with anything else as it is very pricey. Breakfast is typical meditarranean buffet style with a good choice of pastries, cakes, breads, jams and spreads and savoury choices.
The reception areas still look good but without airconditioning on, sitting using the intermittent free wi fi can be uncomfortable.
The terrace is very pleasant with a small private beach beneath, though the beach is hard to access if you have a mobility disability. The pool is very good, but the paddling pool was a murky brown and shortly after we arrived was speedily emptied and left that way. With less than 10% occupancy while we were there ( peak season and school holidays in Catalonia) there is plenty space to spread out and have no competition for poolside beds.
Beware that as seems typical in this region, maintenance is carried out in the cooler hours, so sleep is disturbed with drilling, workmen chatting loudly etc.
The beds have seen better days as has the very tired and worryingly 'fragrant' linen. The third adult in our group was charged 70% for the very small and short put yyou up which sagged alarmingly. The first three nights the air con was switched off so could not be controlled in room. A pathetic excuse of some magical 'magnet' not working in our room brought rapid air conditioning after we 'complained.'
Some distance by car.taxi or bus from the main beach at St Carles de la Rapita makes a stay here either 'stay here' or spend a lot of time and money getting to the main resort. There are no shops or services here.
Remembering that the hotel is not set up to welcome 'foreign' guests is the main advice I can offer. The hotel screams 'recession', the run down rooms, the lack of local visitors and the minimal staff. I wonder how long it will survive in the location it has.
Stayed four nights whilst touring Catalunya, easy check-in,large room with excellent bathroom, full air-con and large balcony with sea view.Public areas clean, lotsof space, swimming pool large with plenty of loungers and overlooking the small beach. The buffet breakfast had a good choice but needed better supervision as first day coffee machine stopped working, second day juice dispencer ran out, third day coffee machine again a misfunction all promptly fixed but annoying first thing in the morning. This hotel is idealy situated for visiting the Ebro Delta National Park with it`s diverse bird population, also the ancient city of Tortosa both a short drive away.Breakfast apart this is very professionly run with pleasent staff and, has nice "open feel" to it. Booked through Booking.com the price was about half of the "spot rate",overall a pleasant, clean hotel with good facilities, easy to locate.Would recommend and use again.
