“Very nice little hostal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of September, we were firstly attracted to Hostal Altamar because of its location in the old town. We were very happy with our choice. The rooms were lovely and clean, the owners / staff very friendly and helpful.
The hostal is very close to the beach and also the numerous bars and restaurants in the old town.
We ate breakfast at the hostal which was toasted roll a selection of jams/ pate etc plus fresh orange juice and coffee, also pastries if you wanted them, the price was very reasonable. I think possibly you can book with or without breakfast.
Would stay here again.

It was ideally situated to walk where ever we wanted to go. The room was clean with private bath. We didn't have any issues with noise and were very satisfied. The only down side to the room was it was advertised as having wifi in the room and we couldn't get reception. It was great in the common area but it would have been nice to have it in the room.

I have spent 2 weeks there, together with my 12 years son and were both delighted. It is a hostel, not a 5* hotel, let us keep that in mind ;-). The hosts, Cecile and Ignacio, and their staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful. We have enjoyed their friendliness and recommendations.

Hostal Altamar is located at 200 m from the most beautiful and quiet beach of the town and within a labyrinth of narrow pedestrian streets with many small shops, restaurants and ice cream shops, I was expecting more noise, while there was none disturbing.

The internet connection was weak at times, but otherwise everything is functional. Breakfast is good for those who enjoy Spanish breakfast and Ignacio himself will be tending to you.
The lack of access by car to the hostel and further on the difficulties with parking seem to be a headache in the beginning, but it came out that it is not at all a tragedy. Ignacio will give you a few tips on how to sort the parking matter out. Everything you may need is at less than 7 minutes walk from this hostel which is great: convenience store, restaurants, wonderful ice creams, shops, tobacco shops, post cards and stamps, beach item shops, pharmacy, medical care, parking,... really everything. Just ask Ignacio or the staff how to get there.

Almunecar has pleasant weather nice and refreshing after the killing heat of the inland points of interests, wonderful beach, nice scuba-diving and snorkeling, 1 hour away from Granada with is stunningly beautiful Alhambra, 3 hours away from Gibraltar, 4-5 hours from Sevilla...

I could not find a location to rent a scooter or a motorbike but really... I have paid $18 per dayin the Malaga airport for a very nice little car with AC and all so how can I complain?
There are plenty of things to do in Almunecar amongst which scuba diving, snorkeling, visiting history rich places and, ornithological park, bonsai museum, a water park and... something I have enjoyed very much since I did not see for a long time - an open air cinema with new movies every night!!! believe me that 2 weeks are not much.

Beach: pebbles, not crowded at all, with an increased number of tan hunters during the week end. If you are brave enough to climb down and then up again 50m or more high cliffs, you can enjoy almost empty, secluded beaches on natural reserves on the way to the Nerja Caverns.
The coast landscape is stunning: cliffs, little secluded beaches, rocks full of Mediterranean sea specific flora and fauna for snorkeling and scuba diving, etc.

One thing is sure! Almunecar is my holidays destination whenever I will come back to Andalucia, and Hostal Altamar will by my haven.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Just returned from a week at Hostal Altamar and can honestly say it was a delight to stay there.
My room was a huge double with Air Con on demand,TV (not that I watched it)and had a full bathroom and was spotlessly clean as were the communal areas of the property.
The couple that run it are interesting and helpful and very funny at times.
Most of the clientele are youngish singles/couples or young families and the usual pattern seems to be they stay a few nights whilst passing through Almunecar. During my stay the 18 rooms were booked every night,a testament as to how good the place is.
I was in fact the only English speaking guest(as first language)staying with them and I get the feeling that's not unusual for them.
The hostal is very close to the beach and some good restaurants, but there are better of both a bit further afield.
Breakfast was included in my stay and yes it is very basic, toast and pates/preserves, OJ and coffee but what more do you need.A word about the OJ it was squeezed freshly to order and the coffee was the real stuff not instant so both were delicious. To be honest I wasn't eating until late in the evening so the breakfast was adequate to say the least.
The surrounding area is a warren of small pedestrian only streets that on a first visit can be a bit confusing but you soon get the hang of it or get lost!
Almunecar is a very Spanish resort but I like that. It's a Costa without the 'Cost of' as the prices are aimed at the Spanish tourists not the Brits and therefore it's a very reasonable place to stay.
I would definitely stay at Hostal Altamar again and do in fact intend to,that's if there not fully booked!

Room Tip: Lower floor room a good idea as saves lugging case up all the stairs.

not as freindly to the english as would have wished. The breakfast was very poor and not even worth 3.50. Groups of young people in the rooms drinking all night and very noisy ,loud and bad language.
shower head dropped off first night hence no shower, left after second night after nothing was done about the noise. But luckily Booking.com got us our money back as the manager refused .
would never go back.

I stayed here 2 nights in a double/twin room. It was comfortable and clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The location is on a quiet street a few minutes walk from the main beach. I always felt welcome and the place was quiet. Breakfast etc was offered but I chose to eat in the town as there was so much choice.

Room Tip: The wi-fi signal was weak so don't rely on it in your room. Sit in the coffee lounge instead.

This was a lovely hostel to stay in. I happened to be passing through and found great value for money and service in this place. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and better than what you'd expect for the price! There were a good selection of drinks and snacks available in the hostel and it is also within short walking distance of some nice, traditional Andalusian bars, which served beautiful tapas. Traditionally a town aimed at older guests, Almunecar was a great little gem to discover, as well as the hostel, would like to return in the future.
