“Great Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2006

Just got back from a weekend trip to Atlanta with the girls. We got a GREAT deal on our room for $75 a night, thanks to Priceline. I was a little worried we would be stuck a bad room, but not the case at all, super nice big double. At almost the end of the hall from the elevators as well. Super quiet, clean, and well worth the cheap price.

Parking is a little pricey, but that is the case with all ATL hotels.

We selected the Hyatt because of its outdoor pool. When we arrived poolside with our teenage daughter the pool area was filled with "swinging singles" who had paid $10 to attend a party at the pool on a Sunday afternoon from 1-8 p.m. The area was crowded and very noisy, the singles were drinking heavily, and our daughter was hassled by older men who were clearly not hotel guests. It was very unpleasant to be in the middle of this flesh market.
The Hyatt is quite expensive, and part of the expectation for the price is a pool area reserved for hotel guests. We have also stayed at the Ritz and the Westin--these hotels provide a first-class experience, unlike the Hyatt.

I am just returning from a weekend stay at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead. I can definitely say I had an wonderful experience. My entire stay was . Check-in and check-out both took no more than two minutes (seriously). The lobby was wonderfully appointed and the room was just as nice! Didn't have any problems with water pressure and the room had updated furnishings! Will definitely stay here again.

Very low water pressure in showers; LOW FLOW toilets in the room can lead to some embarassing problems so flush like 3 times(YIKES!). No vent in bathroom. I can't believe you only get like 12 stations on their tv. Is this 1975? We ordered two doubles and received a king size which couldn't be changed. Staff is very friendly. Lobby has great decor; staff very friendly--for three hundred a night there are better choices.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead July 7 - 9. The hotel is fine, it's a Hyatt after all, but we just encountered a few inconveniences.
First, the room was on the small side, with a king bed and a ton of unnecessary furniture in the room. For instance, there was an armchair pushed up against the one window in the room and the other side of the chair was situated about 4 inches away from my side of the bed (which I couldn't move) and I kept hitting my foot on it.

On Saturday morning, we left our room early to take care of errands, etc. As we were leaving, there were two cleaning women on the floor, making up the other rooms. We were out all day and when we got back at 3:30, our room still wasn't made up. I called Housekeeping who told me that everyone leaves at 4:00, so if we wanted our room made up, we needed to leave again to give the woman time to tidy up. So instead of taking a nap after being out all day, we had to scramble to get out of the room in time to have it cleaned up. Even after the cleaning woman came, she did not refresh the towels we had used, and usually they tidy up the bathroom counter, laying out your toiletries, etc…this woman did not.

We picked the Hyatt in Buckhead, because it seemed to be the only hotel in the area with an outdoor pool. The pool was ok. It was a basic lap pool with furniture around it; but it was the loud house/trance music they played that was an annoyance; it went on all day. Also, there is a lot of major construction going on in Buckhead, in particular, two huge residential towers going up across the street from the Hyatt. While out at the pool, we had to endure the endless drone of the trance music as well as the construction workers across the way, checking us lying out. Even though the construction site was across the street, the workers were eye level with the pool and the gigantic crane, which was shut down late in the day, was turned around so its massive arm was parked directly above our heads, so the cables were dangling high above the pool - not exactly relaxing. By the way, hotel management should put up a sign asking guests who have to use their cell phones in the pool or gym areas to keep their volume levels at a minimum. We sat next to a woman who spent 30 minutes on the phone boring everyone at the pool details on her recent breakup…and it wasn’t pretty.

I think next time we go to Atlanta, we are going to stay at the Intercontinental in Buckhead or even the Ritz. Once you go beyond the hospitality in lobby of the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead, you are on your own.

We enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hyatt with two exceptions: the constant nickel and diming, and a surprise pool party on a Sunday.

The hotel looked elegant and our room was large and clean. However, we were surprised to have to pay $15 a night for parking. In some cities, this would seem like a great deal. However, with the ample parking available in Atlanta and the five-star class of the hotel, we did not anticipate such a charge. In addition, the hotel widely advertises its anywhere wifi. Unfortunately, the privilege of using said wifi will set the traveler back $9.95 a day.

On Sunday, we planned to sit at the pool and relax. At about 1pm, giant plastic liquor bottles were tossed in the pool (which didn't bother us), and a DJ set up and started blasting boom boom house music (which did bother us). When we asked him to lower the volume so we could carry on a conversation, the DJ told us that was how the hotel requested it. When we double-checked with the manager, we found it to be true. In addition, the pool is open to everybody, not just hotel guests. This makes for quite a party for the locals, not so much for hotel guests with families (or who just want to relax).

So long story short, if you don't need a relaxing day at the pool and don't mind constant piddling charges, you may enjoy your time at the Hyatt. It is a well-architected hotel in a convenient location.

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hyatt for two nights. We were very impressed the second we walked through the doors. The decor was beautiful - it reminded me of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Throughout our stay, we found that nearly every staff member we encountered, from the concierge to the bell staff, was incredibly nice and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.
The hotel was about a block and a half away from the MARTA station (public rail system) and a few blocks from excellent Buckhead shopping. We walked to the MARTA station several times and took the train to the Atlanta Braves opening game (in which the concierge personally got us tickets to the day of), Underground Atlanta, and the World of Coca-Cola.
The hotel also had a personal driver that would drop you off or pick you up within a two mile radius of the hotel. The drivers were very courteous and helpful.
If ever in Atlanta again, we would definitely book another stay with the Grand Hyatt!
