“Great accommodations, high-effort service with some flaws”

We used an internet deal for a one-night stay at the Ellis this past weekend. It included a bottle of wine, a plate of fruit, breakfast for two, a $15 credit at The Terrace and a $20 spa credit.

The rooms are small, which is to be expected at a boutique hotel, but they are not stifling and tiny. While small, the rooms are excellent. They are clean, well-appointed and modern, overall very nice. The Molton Brown soaps/lotions are a great touch and the bed is very comfortable. We did not experience any street noise problems since we were on the backside of the building and not on the Peachtree side. The price you pay for this is a likely view of the adjacent building's brick wall and nothing else. Not a big deal, I'd rather sleep in quiet than look out at the skyline.

The staff is very friendly and seems concerned with your happiness and interested in you as a guest. However, where I fault the Ellis is in their execution of service. While the intent is certainly there, the execution falls short. We were supposed to have our wine and fruit delivered at 4pm on check-in day, it did not arrive until 4:30 when we were ready to leave. Our room service breakfast was delivered on time, but without silverware and napkins. I called room service and asked for these items, but 10 minutes later they had not arrived. I had to go down to the restaurant myself and get them. That's just not acceptable for a hotel advertising itself with "let us surprise you". After requesting a late checkout, my room key no longer worked after the standard checkout time, so again I had to go downstairs and remedy the problem.

This hotel lacks a service elevator, so you will often wait to get up and down, not to mention that when an elevator does arrive, it's likely to contain a member of the staff, perhaps with a large cart. There are a few problems with this but most likely difficult to fix since installing a service elevator is probably not an option.

Overall the Ellis is a fine hotel but could be even better with a close review of their service execution.

Room Tip: Higher is better and the non-Peachtree side is quiet

“Hotel stay was nice, housekeeping not so much....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

My husband and I stayed for one night for our anniversary on our way out of town. The hotel stay was decent and the service (other than housekeeping) was good until down the road I discovered I had accidentally left my earrings in the room. I called the hotel and left a message with housekeeping twice! I asked for a manager on duty and received another voicemail. Finally someone did (2days later) get back to me but said he would look into it. Unfortunately, I knew then my jewelry item was gone as he never even called back. In most other upscale hotels the housekeeping staff are trained to be honest and turn in any left items in the room. I am very disappointed this was not the case here. I also learned a lesson as well that although service was good checking in, etc. TRUE service comes into play when you really need assistance which was not there for my stolen earrings. Housekeeping not honest at all at least the one that cleaned our room and that to me is a huge concern!!

“Had higher expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

Husband I stayed at the Ellis for one night during the Bank of America Football Classic. We had just spent the previous night in the Courtyard Marriot Atlanta which is right beside the Ellis in the old Carnegie building. In my opinion, the Courtyard was much better as it was a new boutique hotel recently opened.

The Ellis wasn't bad but there were a few glitches such as the slow elevators, bad service at the hotel restaurant or shall I say lack of service. We waited for a table to be cleaned off but that never happened so we went to The Ritz across the street to eat. Also the room need a sprinkle of air freshner and some less dented office desks.

The positives include it's location... Marta was in front of the hotel, lots of eateries in the general vicinity, and enjoyed the Molton Brown toiletries. Too my joy, didn't see any ghosts as one reviewer wrote the hotel was haunted. Overall, probably would choose the Courtyard next door versus The Ellis!

“Very chic, very fun, do not miss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

My sister and I stayed on a Monday evening, found out about it through a Group-on deal. We did circle the hotel twice, no places to park/unload. Finally my sister got out and found the valet. Very friendly and helpful. Greeted inside by impeccably dressed women, the lobby is very modern.

The room was immaculate, a bit small, but very nicely done. The toiletries are very upscale, as are the fixtures and decor. There is a small area of 'enticements'...candy, nuts, water, chocolate body paint(!)..for a cost, of course.

Included in our package was a free wine tasting, the bar tender Maziur (spelling), was very generous and kind. It was not really a tasting, more than that, we also had a coupon for two free Martinis, my daughter used one of those and it was excellent. The bar area is very fun, very secure and safe, but overlooking the street.

Also included was a free breakfast, it was amazing. The service was a bit slow...but friendly. What's the rush??? Haha. We sat on the terrace which was so fun. It made us regret not having our dinner there. There is a $15 coupon in with the room key/map.

The beds were very comfortable, although we could hear some sort of recording over and over outside (perhaps from the MARTA across the street?). Tons of pillows. The shower was amazing. We were on the 14th floor.

Check out was easy, quick retrieval of the car... Coffee to go if desired. Felt very appreciated by all the staff, including the ones we just happen to meet with on the elevator! Would return in a heartbeat!

“WOW! Great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2011

I can't express to you how nice the staff at this hotel is. From the valet parkers, to the door man, to front desk, to the room service, and even the maintenance man we spoke with in the elevator. EXTREMELY polite and helpful.

The rooms are very nice. Don't expect a huge suite but the room is ample. We had a great view.

I was concerned about the distance this hotel would be from other places... don't worry... everything is within walking distance. We walked to Hard Rock, the Aquarium, CNN, and the World of Coke. Behind the hotel is an awesome coffee shop (less than 1 block away).

Valet parking is $25 per day - get over it. That is the self park over night rate at some of the parking garages. You are downtown... it is going to cost you to park. I do not recommend skimping on parking... it is worth paying more for secure parking!!!

We stayed here and took a cab over to the Fox Theatre to see Wicked. Very reasonable and the valet was very helpful to find us a cab.

Sleep - had no problems here. The bed was comfortable and we heard no noises.

If I go back to Atlanta... we will be staying there!!!

Room Tip: We were on the Peachtree side which concerned me for noise but on the 9th floor we didn't hear anything.
