“Stuck on Snackies!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

We could easily have made a meal from the exceptional starters at Empire State South, beginning with the house favorite -- an assortment of treats in jars: Pork Rillette, Trout Mousse, Pickles, Pimento Cheese & Bacon Marmalade, Boiled Peanut Hummus.

GA Rabbit Sausage is another Empire specialty. GA Shrimp with Harissa Mayo, Chorizo, Carrot Blossoms, and Puri Bread made for another exceptional plate. Chef Hugh Acheson, of Top Chef fame, calls these small plate starters “Snackies.”

We also enjoyed main entrées of GA Blue Catfish with GA Olive Oil & GA Shrimp; Pork Loin with Smoked Figs, Fritters and Red Sorrel; Ricotta and Egg Ravioli with Green Beans, Chanterelles, Squash and Shoyu. All great, but the "Snackies" were the highlight.

“Expected more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

I was happy to try this place and had seen good reviews about it but left feeling unsatisfied and disappointed. For our app we tried the pimento cheese w/ bacon marmalade. It was a pretty nice portion, especially for sharing. We went on a Sunday. we had the brunch pork belly and the farmers egg. my daughter liked the pork belly but the farmers egg was dry and flavorless. Our meals seemed overpriced, very small portions, and just a bit disappointing.

“Outstanding.. well worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

Everything about this place is outstanding. The service is top notch, the food is top notch. Each serving was better then the one before. The Farm Egg was outstanding. The Octopus was outstanding and ending the evening with the Bread Pudding and Fritter Party just made the meal. If you have an evening that you want to enjoy your time and have some good food while in Atlanta.. make sure to put this on your schedule.

“Menu Tasting Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

My friend and I were visiting from out of town and had heard about the chefs here. We decided to splurge on the $80 tasting menu and then also got the individual wine pairings with each. Although expensive, we feel it was worth every penny. The food was wildly imaginative and delicious. The wines were nicely matched to our courses, also. The waitress was very knowledgeable and pleasant. The pace of the meal was also just right.
The restaurant definitely has a younger clientele for a fine dining establishment, which made for a fun scene. Not at all stuffy, considering the level of service and high quality of food. We saw everything from women in dresses (like us) to jeans. All in all, highly recommended.

“Alright”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

I was really excited to try this place and had heard great things about it, but we left feeling unsatisfied and disappointed. There were a few standouts: the mason jar "snackie" was very delicious (esp. the pimento cheese w/ bacon marmalade!) and was a pretty nice portion, especially for sharing. Both appetizers were stellar as well (octopus and the farm egg). All four entrees (prime rib, bass, ravioli, pork), however, were overpriced, very small portions, and just not very coherent. While the rest of the meal indeed exuded the 'refined Southern' feel, the entrees paled in comparison and had too much going on on one plate. The dessert (Southern fruit cardamom cake) was the smallest portioned dessert I have seen anywhere, and the cake was dry anyway. The coffee with dessert was very good, albeit $3.50 a cup. To top off the experience, our server was completely listless, and the prices were just staggering. I would maybe be willing to come back here for breakfast, but I will certainly not return for dinner.
