“Great Restaurant”

My friends and I have always received great service here. The food is amazing, probably the best Mediterranean restaurant in the city.

“Great food”

We visited this place when they were running a promo with Travelzoo. We loved the food and the atmosphere. We'll be back again.

“Comfortable...the magic was in the music!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

We selected Couscous for Valentines (day after). We expected Tunisian fusion menu. We got a fixed price Valentines Day menu...that was less Tunisian and more fusion...duck confit, butternut squash soup, lobster ravioli. The food was good. The real star of the evening was the great music...moorish and exotic. Not what you would typically get in an ATL eatery. The music fit the food and the evening. We would go back just for the music...and it was obvious others enjoyed the music as well...how many places do you go to eat and you end up applauding the music? That was a first for us.

“Unique place and unique offerings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

This place has always peeked our interest every time we passed it…we finally decided to give it a try.

The Atmosphere:
CousCous is just off Monroe Drive and is easy to get to. It has its own parking lot (not valet). When we entered, we were asked if we had reservations (we did not)…the host/owner was still able to seat us (it was early…6:30…and the place was less than half full). The place quickly filled as the evening went on (so reservations are definitely recommended). It’s a relatively big space and the back dining room has a wall of windows that looks out on to Piedmont Park/Skyline with some great views. However, the wall opposite the windows needs some work….there was an exposed electric outlet (no wall plate) and overall the wall was not pleasant to look at (ugly blue)…mirrors would be so much better to reflect the views of the park/skyline. The place was also loaded with vases of fake flowers stuffed with colored tissue paper…they could do something nicer than these. Since they are going for a Mediterranean feel, we would have liked to have seen a lot of brass lanterns instead (there were a few) and more fabric on the ceiling. The bathrooms were nice and hot water in the sink was the perfect temperature…however, the floors were a little sticky.

The Food:
Pomegranate Splash (Martini) – Very tasty with lots of “skaters” (those ice particles that float on top).

Grilled Charmoula Shrimp Skewers – The shrimp and sauce were really tasty…would definitely get them again. The only downside was the “peach” salsa….it was more of a corn salsa and the corn seemed old (dried out) and not pleasant to eat.

Couscous Feast with Braised Chicken – The couscous was fluffy and light (and plentiful)…but could have used a little more flavor. The chicken was “fall off the bone” tender and juicy. There was also a mixture of carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and a pepper making this a pretty big dish.

Bistro Hangar Frites – The hangar steak was cooked perfectly (ordered Medium Well)…however, it was a little tough and almost a third of it was fat/gristle. Really disappointing. The other weird thing was that it was really thick. We are used to Hangar Steaks being pretty thin…never seen one this thick (which made it seem small on the plate). The plate was loaded with some tasty fries, but we paid an upcharge to have the Parmesan/Truffle fries that are an appetizer and there was barely a smattering a Parmesan and no truffle (oil??) in sight or taste.

The Service:
Our server was friendly and kept an eye on us. The owner is fully vested in this place as he was performing the duties of host. We briefly spoke to him on the way out about his other restaurant, Perla Taqueria, which we used to love, but has gone downhill the past couple of times we’ve been there. He was very open to our critique of Perla and admitted that he needs to focus some attention on it.

The Value:
Prices were in line with its location and food.

The Conclusion:
If the Hangar Steak had been a better cut and the upcharge fries had truly contained more parmesan/truffle, we would have been happier. I definitely recommend everyone give it a try though as this is a unique place with some unique offerings.

“Service beyond wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

I went with a group of 8 for New Year's Eve. Someone had made reservations and it wasn't until we were seated that we realized there was only a $55 prix fixe meal for the holiday. None of us was prepared to spend that much and, more importantly, a few of my friends have food restrictions that wouldn't allow them to eat from the menu.

Our server said the regular menu was unavailable, so we reluctantly got up to search for something else. On the way out the man who sat us asked why we were leaving. We explained the situation and he said that he was the owner and that we could absolutely order off the regular menu. He totally saved the day!

I ended up with Steak Frites (the meat was seasoned really well) and tried a little of the Lavender Creme Brulee. Both dishes were worth going back for. Not to mention cool music and and awesome belly dancer - who can beat that? Thanks to this restaurant for a great ending to 2013!
