“Exceeded our expectations for food and service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

We decided to try out Steel as a prelude to going to the Fox theater for a show and WOW, were we impressed! There are a lot of good-to-excellent restaurants in the ATL's mid-town area, and with the competition for dining dollars, the truly excellent restaurants have to step up their game to stay on top.

Steel is, I believe, one of those excellent restaurants that rises to the occasion. The decor of the place is modern contemporary, yet its warm colors and other touches gives it a very welcoming ambiance, with a great mix of booths, tables, bars, and a private dining area to boot.

As we had just gone to the nearby Oceanaire the night before for seafood, Steel provided us with a very interesting counterpoint to that establishment. Where the Oceanaire was formal, a little stilted, and obviously geared to the expense-account, special occasion crowd, Steel was relaxed, adventurous, friendly, and just as obviously geared to doing what it took to make our dining experience memorably satisfying. Also, Steel was an excellent value compared to the Oceanaire, as, in our opinion, we had a better meal and service for considerably less money.

Steel offers a varied menu centered on fresh seafood, sushi, and more. Our server, Molly, was not only well-versed on the menu and wine list, but offered up a personal selection of wines for tasting so that we could better match our dining selections. Very well done and absolutely on the mark! We had the 'tuna tower' for an appetizer, which could have made a meal for one, and it was over-the-top excellent. To follow that up we had a mixed surf-and-turf plate and their signature Chilean sea bass. Again, both dishes went well beyond our expectations in taste, freshness, quality, and presentation!

We look forward to returning very soon!

“Beautifully decorated, nice ambiance, but blah food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013 via mobile

My sis and I went for dinner on a Saturday night. We wanted to try something new and she lives close to the restaurant. Our waiter started out great. We wanted to they sake for the first time, so he recommended a sampler of sorts. He suggested the only hot one they offer and a few chilled. Afterwards, he acted as if we were annoying him. This was new to us, so we didn't know if we should sip or guzzle down.

The food was unexpectedly bland. I ordered the orange chicken expecting a little spice. There was none. It did have some crunchy and hardened chili peppers that I couldn't bite into. My sister had the sea salt chicken. It came with a spicy ying yang sauce for dipping. Without the sauce, it was pretty dull.
We both ordered fried rice, but it was more like overly steamed rice. It was pretty gummy.

We noticed a gnat had flown inside of one of our sake glasses and told one of the guys that clears tables. He sort of chuckled and just took the glass away. I mentioned it to our waiter who then had the manager come over. He offered a free dessert for our trouble. We ordered the chocolate lava cake. It was pretty bland too. Fortunately the ice cream made it better.

Overall, enjoyable dining experience due to ambiance and lots of laughs. But the service was average and food was not up to par.

“Consistently Good Time After Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I have been to Steel a handful of times for different reasons (dinner, birthday, NYE) and every time has been a positive dining experience. The service is consistent, with everyone there seeking to make sure you have an excellent time. You won't find anyone who says "let me get your waiter"; they'll just make sure you're taken care of.

The drinks can be a bit on the more expensive side, but they have a rotating beer list that's always good and if you like a fruitier cocktail, the Mangotini is excellent.

The seafood and sushi are some of the best in Atlanta, and the vegetarian options are, unlike many other places, inspired and tasty, too. When we go, we usually order a handful of items to share at the table, rather than one entree each, and I have yet to try something that I did not care for. The only disappointment I've had was the chocolate bundt cake, but as a competitive baker, desserts tend to be the most difficult to impress me. The fruit in brandy with ice cream, however, is NOT to be missed!

If your worried about the price point, know that you get what you pay for here. I suggest going during Midtown Restaurant week if you'd like a great experience with a lower price, as well. They often have happy hour deals and specials, so make sure to like them on Facebook or follow on Twitter for access to those!

“Fantastic sushi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

The sushi here is fantastically fresh and very tasty. Prices are, well, pricy! But you get what you pay for. The owner came by to check on me (I was sitting by myself at the sushi bar), and even though it was a busy night, we chatted for probably like 5 minutes. A great experience!

“Casual Sushi and Japanese Kitchen Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

Sat at the bar on a busy Tuesday night. Hot and Sour soup was one of the best I have had. Sushi and Seaweed Salad were average. Spent $55 on this with two $10 glasses of wine. Service was spot on and the atmosphere of the place was pretty casual as well as upbeat.
