Owner description: This extraordinary zoo, one of the oldest in the U.S., underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in the 1980s and is still expanding. Its landscaping replicates the natural habitats of the numerous animals, some of which are endangered species. Two panda bears from China delight the crowds, and groups of gorillas separated by moats do their own share of entertaining.

“Zoo Atlanta”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

I have been to the zoo on an afternoon in December 2012. The entrance fee is about 17€. The zoo is accessible by bus 32 from five points subway station.
There might be much bigger zoos anywhere but Atlanta's zoo offers a number of spectacular species you won't find that easy elsewhere. Some of the highlights where the komodo dragon, the drill, the fossa, the cassowary, the sun bear, the yellow-backed duiker and of course the giant panda. The habitats for gorillas and orangutans are huge and seem to be another highlight, especially for children. (I only had two hours and am not very interested in apes, so I only had a brief look). Unfortunately, some animals like the clouded leopard and the bush dog were temporarily out of exhibition, I presume due to the cold season.
If you are interested in reptiles and amphibians, you should not miss the "world of reptiles". Allthough the building seems to be a little outdated, the terraria are appealingly decorated. A barrier in front of the terraria seems to be annoying at first but this prevents children from tapping at the glass and the animals are less shy. In fact I found all inhabitants except one water monitor. One focus lies on venomous snakes, like the king cobra, the black mamba and a dozen species of rattlesnakes.
I had read here that the zoo is sometimes crowded. At least when I had been there, this was not the case. You can easily spend two hours in the zoo.

“Zoo Atlanta is in the elite of the nation's zoos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

Zoo Atlanta is one of the best zoos in the country. It's easy to get to, relatively inexpensive (especially if you opt for a season pass), and the variety of animals and the extensive habitats the zoo has created over the last decade are spectacular to see. Plus the kids activities (carousel, train, playground) provide good relief from walking around.

The reptile house is the only relic remaining from the 80s when animals were generally caged and displayed for view. Now the native habitats resemble what I've seen at Disney's Animal Kingdom or the San Diego zoo's animal park, only on a smaller scale.

We rotate annual passes for the zoo and the aquarium to avoid burnout. Both are well worth it.

“Good, but small”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

The zoo is good, as far as it goes. It is much improved, but is so tight on space, that there isn't really enough room
