“Brilliant. Unsurpassable B&B”

Village Inn of Woodstock

First of all we were completely taken by the charm of what we saw online and the charm of old world details of the decor. on arrival we were greeted by david and evelyn who are incredibly sweet and truly welcoming. the home is beautifully brought back to life and tastefully "olde" and instantaneously comfortable, far surpassing what we saw online.. we stayed in room 5 on the first floor. it was great to see that the attention that was put into the reception rooms continued to the suites. we had an opporunity to walk through the rest of the house and check out the other rooms that weren't occupied and every room is different and incredibly cozy and inviting. breakfast is U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E. Evelyn makes everything from scratch. nothing prepackaged right down to the bread. we checked out other b&b's in woodstock and believe me they leave alot to be desired, so DO NOT waste your time looking anywhere else if you are in woodstock. unfortunately we only got to meet spanky and alfalfa (david and evelyn's sausage dogs) once, as they are kept in david and evelyns place. they are a delightful addition to the truly homely feel of village inn. it seemed obvious that every other guest that was at the inn during our stay was equally enamored with this place and our hosts. this may sound like raving, but it is simply the truth.. check it out for yourself.

We stayed at the Village Inn in March of 2008 after reading the long list of postive reviews here. We paid extra for the best room - Room 1, seeking a nice weekend away from the city. And while I agree with many statements that the Village Inn is a pleasant experience, my wife and I both agreed that all of the postivie reviews are a bit much. For the high price, we expected more.. .
The positives: Very nice owners, a cute little inn, well kept, great breakfasts. Room 1 is big, it has a TV and a large bathroom, and its own private entrance. Its close to town.
The negatives: First and foremost, Room 1 is directly underneath the owners apartment. The owners have 2 small dogs. The dogs and the owners get up at 5am. I know, because they woke me up both mornings with the pitter patter of footsteps and banging of doors. The walls are thin (like in many B&Bs) and we complained tothe oweners about noise. The decor is interesting, but is very dark and outdated...Imagine the picture on the website about 3 shades darker. The Inn is on a busy road. There's not too much to do at this inn other than hang in your room, which would have been fine if the room was warmer, better lit, there was more privacy, etc.
Bottom line; If you are really into B&Bs, and the experience of meeting the owners, and a good breakfast etc. this is may be a good option. If you're looking for a real, luxurious weekend getaway, I'd consider other options. And if you're a light sleeper or want seclusion from noise, Room 1 does not solve all of your problems. Maybe I am just not a B&B fan, but this was not worth the price.

We very much appreciate all of the great reviews that we have received from our guests, and are saddened that we did not live up to CWA2006’s expectations. It is true that our inn is not silent, we would like it to be, but it is not. CWA2006 complained about noise at about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday night. We had friends over to dinner, and did not realize that we were disturbing CWA2006. We immediately moved to a different part of the inn when the problem was brought to our attention. I was unaware that CWA2006 heard me getting up in the morning. I do get up early since we serve breakfast and prepare everything from scratch. I would gladly have provided earplugs if I was aware of the problem. Since CWA2006’s visit we have installed white noise machines in all of our rooms to help those of us (me included) that are light sleepers and not used to the sounds away from home.
The other complaints that are mentioned are perplexing. The décor is exactly as shown on our site, there are six lamps in the room, but we would have happily provided more lamps if we had been asked. It is true that we are a bed and breakfast, not a full service inn, resort or spa, so I am not sure what activities CWA2006 was expecting. Regarding the temperature in the room, Room 1 has its own thermostat, plus a fireplace that generates heat. There are no temperature restrictions on either the thermostat or the fireplace, so the room can be heated to 85 degrees (or more) if so desired.
I feel badly that CWA2006 and his wife did not enjoy their stay here as much as they, or we, would have liked. We work very hard at making each guest’s experience a special one. Fortunately, we seem to succeed more often than we fail, but it does not make the failures any easier. This is not meant to downplay CWA2006’s complaints, but their TripAdvisor profile indicates that noise sensitivity is an issue for them. If any of the other issues had been brought to our attention during CWA2006’s visit with us, we would certainly have been happy to help. We always do our best to help guests have a delightful visit, both here at our inn and in the Woodstock are, and we wish that we could have been of more help to CWA.

What a great inn! The Village Inn is well appointed and the ambience is perfect. David and Evelyn are charming hosts and serve a delicious breakfast. We were in a 2 room suite with a jacuzzi tub and gas fireplace - the room decor was luxurious and one can tell it was designed with great care.

The Village Inn is close to the center of town - about 1/3 mile walk.
Will definitely stay again!

We stayed here en route to Stowe for a ski holiday, and thought we'd also sample the skiing at nearby Killington. We chose the Village Inn of Woodstock as our base for this based on the Trip Advisor reviews. Although it seemed like Killington might be a bit of a drive, the road is actually very good and it only takes about 25 minutes (and is wonderfully scenic too).

The Village Inn really is as good as the website photos suggest, and the TA reviews say it is. The building is from 1899, and has been completely and sympathetically refurbished by the owners. It is hard to get the balance right between period detail and modern luxe, but the owners have managed it perfectly. The room we were in had a small sitting room with fireplace and plasma TV, a luxurious modern bathroom with massive whirlpool bath and separate shower, and a 4 poster bed which is quite possibly the most comfortable I have ever slept in.

After a day's skiing, a hot bath, watching a movie in front of the fire and then flopping on to that bed was the ideal end to the day.

The breakfast are well worth experiencing too. In 2 days, we managed to eat poached pears in spices with local organic yoghurt, homemade banana muffins, waffles, swiss cheese and sauteed mushroom omelettes, fresh orange juice and great coffee.

The owners, Evelyn and David, were incredibly friendly and are part of the reason we will return here. Now that we know Killington is "do-able" from this location, we will probably choose the Village Inn as our base for our next trip from the UK.

Village Inn of Woodstock

We went on a mini ski weekend in VT and decided to try something a little different and out of the ordinary. Neither of us has ever stayed at a Bed-and-Breakfast before so instead of staying at a boring hotel we thought we’d try this instead. In short we are so very glad we tried this because we had a wonderful time.

For starters Evelyn and David who run the Village Inn were wonderful hosts. (Thank you Evelyn and David if you ever happen to read this.) They were both very friendly and helpful and it was a genuine pleasure meeting them.

The Village Inn was an absolute joy to stay at. It is a beautiful Victorian from the late 1800’s and is in wonderful condition. It is tastefully decorated with furniture and pieces that give the Village Inn a classic but comfortable feel. Modern amenities exist where they should with modern bathrooms, LCD televisions and etc. Perhaps it was the fresh mountain air or the day of skiing but that was possibly most comfortable bed that I have EVER slept in. Everything was extremely clean and in excellent condition and we simply loved the charm and beauty of the inn.

The town of Woodstock, VT is simply charming. Small, beautiful, quaint… it’s the quintessential Norman Rockwell town right out of a storybook. The center of town is a very short walk from the inn so we walked around town to check out the restaurants and little shops. Woodstock is certainly the type of town that I would love to escape to, get out of the “rat race”, kick back, relax and simply enjoy life. (Perhaps I can’t do this permanently just yet but a weekend is certainly better than nothing.)

We had the complimentary breakfast at the Village Inn before we left for the slopes and it was simply delicious. The dining room is cozy and the fresh fruit, juice and waffles was exactly what I needed before a day of skiing. And speaking of skiing… Ascutney Mt. and Suicide Six are just a few minutes away and Killington is about 20-25 minutes down the road. A while ago we started photographing covered bridges and there were many local ones for us to enjoy.

This was our first time ever at a bread-and-breakfast and it was such a great experience that we can’t wait to do it again. Since Woodstock, VT is near several attractions we will certainly be staying at the Village Inn again and we are already looking forward to it.
