I had a great stay at the Shire Riverview for their Wassail week-end. The rooms were really nice and the view out the back was gorgeous. I also found the staff to be very friendly. I would definitely go back -Woodstock is also a gorgeous town.

Just returned from a very restful stay at the Shire Riverview in Woodstock over Thanksgiving weekend. My experience was excellent. I used TripAdvisor to locate the Shire and decided to stay there despite previous mixed ratings from other travelers. I am glad I chose to stay.

Everything was great. We were treated very warmly by the staff during the entire stay from check-in to check-out. They couldn't have been more friendly or informative. They gave great advice about local attractions and dining options. (One was a great place for dinner called the Corners Inn.) I also had a wonderful conversation with Dot, the owner, over morning coffee (which is served daily). She was a very gracious host and I felt like she was genuinely concerned that I was having an enjoyable stay.

My room was very neat and clean. Nearly spotless. It was equipped with a gorgeous 4 posted king-size bed. The furnishings reminded us more of a Bed and Breakfast than a motel. Very cozy, but more than enough room for my wife and I. The room also had an amazing, picturesque view of a river and open field. It was the quintessential image of Vermont!
Tthe Shire was also right in beautiful downtown Woodstock and very convient and walkable to many shops and restaurants.

We are very much looking forward to returning to Woodstock next summer and will definitely be staying at the Shire when we go back!

Shire Motel, Charged Twice for Room

The hotel charged my credit card twice for our one night stay and refused initially to give me a credit. They did call two hours later and said they'd found the mistake. This was after I'd spent a frustrating hour on the phone between the motel and my credit card company disputing this charge. The room, although very quiet and clean, needed renovation and the desk staff was not very welcoming when we checked in. I didn't discovered until the next morning that the TV remote control battery compartment was scotch tapped together and barely worked. How cheap can you get?

Three teachers went for 1 night for a last minute before school fling. It was so-so, (one of the less expensive motels.) The Home Made bananna bread was great @ brkfast, & brkfast was fine. The room was only fair--Old & needing renovation soon...however, it was CLEAN! All in all, I would pay a little more, & be happier....some staff was fine, & one guy kinda rude---who knows what's bugging them?? The pool was very clean & nice.
