Just spent a long July 4 weekend at the Woodstock Inn and unfortunately I came away disappointed. But first the positives. The location of the hotel couldn’t be better, situated downtown in the quaint village of Woodstock Vt. You are just a few steps from the town center where there are a handful of small shops and restaurants. There is even a covered bridge across the street from the hotel. As for the hotel itself, the front lawn and entrance way is beautiful with a large lawn and small garden lining the walkway to the main entrance. In the rear of the hotel is another lawn that serves as a putting green and is adjacent to the outside pool.
Unfortunately, with the exception of the pool area, there is no where to sit outside. There are a few wooden benches scattered around the property, but if you are looking to sit out on a warm summer day and relax, there is absolutely no place to go. This is disappointing, since most of the properties I have stayed at in VT have nice porches or gardens where you can sit enjoy the outdoors. Inside the hotel it is very dark, I can imagine on a cold winter day it might be nice with the fire roaring in the main lobby, but during the summer it is a real downer.
The room was very disappointing. We paid nearly $300 a night and the room was very small and the bathroom was tiny. Like the rest of the hotel the rooms were very dark, with small windows. I cannot comment on the restaurant, as each morning when we went for breakfast there was at least a ½ wait and in the evening we chose to go out.
A little over a mile down the street there is a fitness center and golf course. The fitness center is ok, has a nice indoor pool, but is a bit run down. The golf course looked nice although I didn’t get a chance to play. One final note, we made our reservation online and requested a number of extras (fruit plate, Woodstock branded wine, etc.) all of which was supposed to be delivered to our room once we checked in – we never saw it.
All in all, our stay in the Woodstock Inn was ok, it is in a great location, but the Inn is over priced for what it delivers and you can have a much better experience at some of the higher end B&Bs around. We won’t be going back.
