As a group of 4 (2 couples - 2 men golfers) we stayed at this hotel from 13/7 for a week. Dont bother going cancel your booking. Upon arrival - no porter we all had to struggle with our luggage then finally found trolleys. Reception staff do not give your their full attention, you are speaking to them and they answer the phone/talk to other people waiting at the desk or go off and do something on the pc, rude. We were recommended to go to this hotel by our golf company as they told us it was fab!!! I should have trusted my instincts, it was awful. The Junior Suite we booked with a PRIVATE terrace was in fact a room with a small sitting area and a walk through overlooking a car park (this was classed as the terrace) so we had regular noise from cars coming and going at all times. The housekeeping is a laugh, they dont clean your rooms until sometimes as late as 5pm, they give you one towel each and if you ring them for more you finally get another one 24 hours later, they dont replenish the toilet rolls, when you ring them they finally bring them 2 - 3 hours later, so we had to go to the reception toilets and take those! They leave dirty coffee cups/plastic glasses in your rooms for days, we moved them to the window ledge outside, 3 days later still sitting there. It seems the same woman cleans all of the rooms in the hotel. The hotel pool (one at bottom of the hotel) seems to close when they feel like it, they put up signs round the pool one morning saying pool shut, nobody working in or around pool, the signs were out until approx 1pm, twice this happened - not quite sure why? None of the hotels facilities are open, only the Spa and the Pool Bar and the breakfast room which also serves meals in the evening for HB guests (dont bother eating in here, it is awful, the service is terrible if you can find a member of staff that is). The breakfast room (as this is what it is....) has hardly any choice for breakfast, there is lots of bread but beware the birds come in and peck away at it all of the time. The coffee machine normally worked for a little while then it broke, so someone had to go off and find a staff member, the juice machine had glasses by the side that had flies in them. There was hardly any choice, and most of it had been hours before it was served, the breakfast cereal was in a long plastic tub things that had sellotape on top of one of them, the cereal looked so old like it had been there for days, I had some the first day and that was it.There were no other bars open in the hotel apart from the pool bar, and in the evening when you want to go and have a drink, drinking from a plastic cup in the evening doesnt really do it for me (especially when the prices are so high - 1 pint of lager is 5 euros.....) The Spa treatments I had were ok, but it does seem to be one young girl who is the only one working and she doesnt speak english.
If you want to go into the village you can walk, or get a cab and the best restaurant is in the centre with all of the tables outside (these get booked up in advance) but if you eat inside there is air -con and it is non smoking, the food is excellent and the service is good, just wish we had found out about this restaurant on the first night, we would not have eaten anywhere else. Do not go to Chez Robert, the food is awful even if on the night we choose ladies eat free..... I could go on about this awful hotel, and if you want to contact me please do..... I do have photos I could email to you, I have not had a chance to add them on.

“Great Value - Nice Location”

Gran Hotel Benahavis

Jul 8, 2008

A large group us stayed at this hotel for a friends wedding - the hotel is located in the hills overlooking estepona in a nice old village called benahavis.

The hotel itself seems to be reasonably new and is therefore in good shape. It has two swimming pools, a small gym and a very underused spa. It has two restaurants, which we didnt use given that their is literally 50 restaurants in the nearby village, a pool bar and breakfast room.

Our room was a superior double on the ground floor with a large terrace outside. Nice and clean all in all and the bathroom did the job. If anything the room was a little bigger than I expected.

All in all this hotel represents smashing value for money. We paid less than a hundred euro per night for our stay which was in peak season in July.

Having said this - you should be prepared for some unusual querks in this property - the bar/ pool staff just really dont care about any form of customer service. Their rudeness was actually funny in the end. Breakfast is in my view was poor by even continental standards but those in my company thought it was acceptable. There is only one english language tv channel in the rooms. Prepare for an overdose of CNN! The towel policy for the pool is also a little odd. So all in all - this are little gripes and are easily balanced out by the good prices.

The best tip i can give - Have lunch up in the village. Great / cheap tapas are widely available.

One word of warning - if you are not fit / healthy take real care on the steps on the way up to the village during the day in the summer. Its a steep climb and can get get very hot. A night its still tough enough but the temp does drop a good bit.

Good hotel in nice moutain view location. Nice rooms w upper-middle class level. Yet, away from the beaches and the fun...clearly directed for the elderly couple and older golfers.

My fiancee and I decided to go to this fabulous hotel to treat ourselves for our anniversary. I was recommended this hotel by my brother and I will recommend this hotel to anyone also. The service was fantastic, the rooms were immaculately clean, the food was great, the spa was very quiet and very romantic, the pool area was divine and the location was perfect. What more could you want from a 4* hotel. It was the most peaceful and relaxing holiday in my life. When it was time to leave I felt as if I was dragging myself down to reception (I didn't want to go).

4th time to this hotel and seem to enjoy it more every time.If you want a relaxing time away from the hustle of the coast...but within easy travelling distance...then this is the place for you. The taxi problem seems to have been sorted out and we had no difficulty on this trip! Nice welcome...upgraded to junior suites on arrival with free minibar in room which was replenished if we used anything. Probably said everything we need to say about this hotel in our past reviews.....hotel is spotless, foods good, staff are lovely, havent used the Spa yet but sure i shall one day! Not a great deal of British guests, which we like, but always a nice friendly crowd. Internet access if you need it, lovely pools etc etc etc . Just so relaxing and laid back with stunning views and surrounded by fabulous restaurants up in the village. We shall return!!
