“Nice enough hotel on outskirts of Benahavis”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We spent 3 nights at Gran Hotel Benahavis and it was nice enough. It's quite a big hotel and therefore rather impersonal, but is in a nice location on the outskirts of the town (5-10 min walk away), comfortable and friendly enough. We'd view it as a decent 3* hotel rather than 4*.

I was a bit dubious having read the reviews but no real complaints from us. Some people say the hotel is tired, I'd just say part of it has a traditional feel about it.

Check in - Quick and Efficient

Room - Very Spacious, separate living room, 2 showers, balcony, views of the village and football pitch. All in all great, only issue was the temp control on the air con wouldn't change so it was either on or off for us. Couldn't be bothered complaining as we spent very little time in the room.

Board - We chose bed and breakfast upon recommendation. An abudance of restaurants/tapas bars mean there was no real need to eat lunch and dinner in the hotel. Breakfast was fairly basic, however I stuck to fruit, selection of hams and coffee, which were fine. Some reviews complain about the breakfast room itself being dark and dingy, the simple answer to that is sit outside in the sun or the shade. Service at the pool restaurant was mixed, when we didn't want to walk to the village we ate here, not bad food to be honest, fresh salads, pizzas, slightly pricier than what you will pay in the village though.

Pool area - great with great views, plenty of sunloungers however the new comfy covers for the loungers only turned up on our last day so anyone visiting now will be very comfortable by the pool. Pool had lots of dead flies in it, not a major issue but a bit off putting.

Location - The hotel is situated at the bottom of the village near the local school, football pitch, driving range and communal pool area. To get to the restaurants is about a 10 to 15 minute walk up some fairly steep hills, we would do this walk 2 or 3 times per day with a buggy and a 4 month old baby. The walk certainly makes that sangria or beer even more appealing once you get there. Restaurants very reasonable for both food and drink, tapas especially cheap and all freshly prepared with local ingredients.

Overall great place to visit, hotel was fine (some people who've left bad reviews are just too fussy), the village fantastic. Our first visit to Benahavis and would definitely return.

This is a lovely hotel in a village well known for the number and range of restaurants. The hotel is big - perhaps one of its problems - and both the bedrooms and public rooms are cavernous. It lacks intimacy and customer care but if you are looking for an economical base with pool and spa facilities yet close to dozens of restaurants, then this may be ideal for you. Its a wedding location - and that says it all.

The hotel is nicely laid out, spacious.
beautiful setting, terrific views from rooms...
so much potential

Poolbar was open 1 day out of 7.
Service was absolutely appalling from bar staff but receptionists were friendly.
Rooms were dated.
Air conditioning didn't work and after complaining 4 times it was still not correctly fixed, causing problems sleeping.
Barman ran out of a certain type of alcohol, gave someone in our company a different type of drink (brandy) and allowed the bill to run up without mentioning the fact that it was twice the price.
some of our company ate in the hotel some nights and said service and food left a lot to be desired for.
Simple lack of courtesy in many situations makes this hotel impossible to recommend.

This hotel is approx an hours drive from Malaga Airport and has beautiful mountain views. We were in room 117, which had plenty of room and lots of drawers and hanging space, also a good sized bathroom and a small terrace. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Benahavis Village and its a heck of a climb to get to the village, but well worth it when you do! There are so many lovely restaurants, with a vast array of choice.
On paper, this hotel seems to have it all, two large swimming pools, plus a small pool for kids,Plenty of sunbeds and towels to rent for 20euro, which is returned when you take them back, four bars, two pool cafes and a restaurant, when we were there, most of the bars were closed. The menu in the pool cafe has cocktails on it, when we asked for one, we were told they were actually available in the other pool bar, which was closed because the day was overcast! There was also not enough staff on in the restaurant and Piano Bar. I asked for a vodka with orange and the barman went to get the orange and found none behind the bar and started shouting. It was very uncomefortable. We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening. the choice was the buffet or A la Carte. Nobody seemed to know the correct price of the buffet. We were told 3 different prices and one member of staff did not evn know there was a buffet that night. We ate from a a la carte menu and the the service was sooooo slow! From getting the menu, ordering and actually getting the meal, was just over an hour. Having said that, the food was good. The breakfast in the morning was great and there was a huge selection. However the plates were cold and the fruit was tinned.
If the hotel had more staff and was a bit more consistant in general, it could be 5 Star.

Room Tip: Rooms on the East side, overlooking the second pool are nice and quite

Brilliant Hotel surrounded by fantastic mountain views.Staff very helpful. Rooms spotless. Pools clean and well maintained.
A 10 minute walk/climb to village but well worth the effort as there are an abundance of top restaurants to choose from and reasonably priced selective menus

Room Tip: Courtyard roomview if possible

I have stayed at this hotel before in 2009 it was a haven away from the madding crowds and this was why I chose to go there again. If you fancy relaxing and sunbathing around the two pools listening only to the birds tweeting then this is the place for you. However that does come with a word of warning, because it is a lovely location, weddings tend to be hosted there and it is no longer a peaceful haven!

It would not put me off though. The staff were fantastic, very efficient and friendly. The food good although the local town has a fantastic choice of restaurants so you tend not to eat in the hotel. We stayed in room 111 which although did not have a view of the pool, it was very large with a massive terrace.

Room Tip: Either the bungalows which I think are 401 - 409 or 111
