“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Very friendly and helpful staff, lot of entertainments, delicious breakfast and dinner, clean rooms and nice atmosphere. Only thing that there was not WiFi and a bit of noise from the street. But anyway, was sad to leave it.

Just got back from our honeymoon staying in this dump. First, on arriving, a 50 euro deposit, not mentioned, second, the hotel was dark and dingy, on up to our room which looked out to the back of the hotel onto a noisy street. The covers on the bed had blood and various other stains on them, the bottoms of the drawers in the dresser were broken, the shower and bath were rusty, the phone cable had been cut, the tv only had 2 channels, both foreign, 2 single different height beds, then we go downstairs to get one of the "snacks" they offer, we walk into the restaurant and the only member of staff in there is also serving the pool bar. When asked where the snacks were she pointed to a couple of trays containing sliced bread, ham and cheese and said "there" When we went over to them they were partially covered in cling film with flies all over them. We then went outside to the pool bar. Ordered one cocktail and a beer from the bar only to be served then in tiny plastic vending machine cups. We then asked for and ice cream and were told that they are not included in the "all Inclusive". We then went for the "200 yard" walk to the front which took about 15 minutes, past old houses, graffiti walls and old cars. Later when we came back we went in to have some dinner, it looked more like pig slop, with the flies still there from earlier!! So of to a decent restaurant for some dinner. After that, being the height of the world cup, we thought we would go to the St Anton bar to watch the football. When we walked in to the reception it was much lighter than the Santa Maria but smelt of sewage. We went into Mollys bar where all the entertainment was supposed to be and the only person in there was the barman playing on his phone. We asked if he could put the football on only to be told that all the tv,s were broken!!! So once again a walk to another bar to watch it. Back to the room for the night, was so hot and with only a ceiling fan, that constantly droned all night we left the sliding door open to get some air in only to be woken early in the morning with lorries outside our window making loads of noise. That was enough. Although it was our first day there we checked out and booked into the paradise bay hotel which was supposed to be 1 star better then the Santa Maria but I would say it was like comparing prison to the Hilton!! This hotel can not possibly have a 3 star rating, I wouldn't even give it a 1 star

Firstly a word of warning! The Hotel asks for a €50 deposit in case anything in the room gets damaged. If you want to use the safe in the room it costs €10 plus a charge of €30 for the week. To get the remote for the TV in the room costs another €6. That just about takes out the €100 I took with me. Although I did have €50 to bring home with me! Beware of the Time Share (they don’t call it that anymore) sales people who will firstly try and befriend you, then get you into their car for a free ride to one of the big hotels for a two hour presentation and the promise of a free taxi ride to your original destination.

We went “All inclusive” which means that the drinks were free. It does not mean that the mixers were part of the deal. There were no bottles of water but you could have a glass (sorry plastic vending cup) which is what all the drinks were served in. We went out and bought bottled water from the local shops (6 bottles for €3. The one redeeming feature at the bar was Alba with her friendly smiling face and always ready to serve you.

The food can be best described as “adequate to good” there was variation and quantity. We had a young child with us and found it difficult to find things that he would eat though.

The room was clean and airy with a rotating fan on the ceiling and a large patio type door leading on to a balcony overlooking the large swimming pool. That had to be left open all day with the curtains closed to try and keep out the heat. (It was 33°C). Having a young child with us made me wish that the table and chairs on the Balcony were bolted down in case he moved them and decided to climb on something to get a better view. They only cleaned the room and changed the sheets twice whilst we were there. It would benefit from air conditioning.

Travel by public transport is cheap €1.50 per day so don’t get conned into being taken to the local Aquarium for example, by the Hotel taxi for €15 each.

All said, the staff were friendly and helpful and I would still go back to Malta and for the amount of money I paid (about £300 per head) it was value for money.

This hotel is very dated & DIRTY had a weeks stay room NEVER cleaned in that time !! The bath in our room was chipped & rusty as was the shower mixer tap.Food was terrible same thing everyday & most not edible. Public toilets in main reception area not cleaned properly all week !!! I must say the staff were very helpful & friendly.
I did hear while I was there that the hotel had only been reopened a year after being closed for several years previously THEY SHOULD HAVE REMAINED CLOSED !!
Malta is a lovely island shame this hotel ruined it for us.

Room Tip: If you get an option as for a pool view room as the road side rooms are very noisy.

it was a last minute booking so options were limited....but i was shocked that a holiday hotel in 2014 had no concept of customer service or adding to the holiday experience. we were half board but only ate one dinner as the food and service was poor. certain staff members were rude and unhelpful. we spent no time at the hotel as there wasn't enough sun loungers at either hotel, the location is ok, walking distance to beach and bars. our room was cleaned once in 5 night stay with a good shower.the management could really benefit from taking customer reviews on board by promoting a friendly welcoming hotel.

Arrived at 5am on a Saturday to be greeted with having to pay a 50 euro deposit, no mention of this on booking, may cause some families a problem. We had 2 rooms both were disgusting, smelly, dirty, no wardrobe doors, broken mirror hanging from wall, none working shower or shower stuck to the wall. We attempted to eat twice during the evening but the standard of food was very poor no variety and either cold or just warm so although all inclusive ended up eating out.(flies crawling over the salad food) Drinks provided in plastic small cups including hot drinks!
By Wednesday evening still no cleaner so after speaking with reception (staff appear very complacent about any complaints & heard a lot of people complaining) arrived back to find little difference towels still filthy and to finish us off my partner then found a cockroach crawling around his room.
In desperation and getting no joy from staff we moved at 1 am to the Topaz yards down the road. What a difference would recommend this hotel to anyone. Room was like a palace, food excellent and staff excellent and drinks in proper cups, hooray!!
We would recommend that Thomas Cook stop selling this hotel it is a disaster waiting to happen!! & we have made a complaint direct to them.

Room Tip: We wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone whatever room they had.

Jose the receptionist was very good and helpful. Went out of his way to make our stay very pleasant. I would highly recommend him for doing a good job.
I couldn't ask for better reception. The hotel otherwise was average but was based quite centrally.
