“Santa Maria Hotel Malta? Don't go there!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We recently stayed at this hotel and were, from day one, disappointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming but the cleanliness of the hotel and the food left us eating out, we were (sadly) booked in as all inclusive. Far too many flies and little effort by the restaurant staff to resolve the problem although I will accept that there was a problem throughout the island. There are a lot of other hotels on the island making a big effort. The Santa Maria did not even try!!! Bugibba is a really sweet place and the people are really nice and helpful. With hotels like the Santa Maria, they detract from being a great place simply because it doesn't do much to give the feel good factor. The hotel could benefit from being closed again (it was for a long time) and a complete refit being carried out along with getting rid of the catering company they use, going back to basics and cooking their own food on site.

We have just returned back from a 10 day all inclusive holiday in The Hotel Blue Sea Santa Maria Hotel.

What I would like to say about the hotel would probably get deleted so I will try the uncensored version.

I understand that some people would say you get what you pay for however we paid over £2300 for 4 off us.

Yes we know it may be a budget hotel however there is certain things I would expect such as a working toilet which we didn’t have for the whole 10 day break despite constant repairs being carried out to it, there is so much wrong with the hotel not even Bob the builder could fix it.
We would also expect a level of hygiene, by that I mean no flies swarming over the food, I would also like to know what I am eating, by the general presentation of the food it was hard to make out whether it was road kill or some had actually cooked such unrecognisable pile of plip plop. The first few days I spent wrestling with flies over the food in the end they won. The restaurant is ideally named The Chapel Restaurant which is well named as every meal we found that we would pray for something decent to eat.

I don’t know whether the cleaning staff were playing hide and seek because if they were they have mastered the game to a T I didn’t see them in 10 days.

Now on to the Jacuzzi / fish pond, I didn’t know whether to go and buy some fishing rods and spend the day fishing which would have been great as it would have been about the best entertainment I would have had in the whole 10 days there, this brings me on to the entertainment.

Entertainment is about as entertaining as a kick in the go nads.. simple its desperate
The lifts stunk like a fisherman’s sock and on way day we had the pleasure to share the lift a great big boggy someone kindly had wiped on the lift mirror. I think the cleaning staff where that impressed by the size that they decided to leave it there for 3 days.

I would also expect a safe environment no obsolete drain covers, broken tiles around the pool and raised slabs (and yes my wife did trip over it breaking her toe) so you would expect when reporting such an incident the staff would be eager to repair the issue so no further accidents could re-occur….No chance! we did get a shrug of the shoulders and told to speak to the maintenance man!! Who hit it with a big hammer… nice try but it’s still the same

Our room was located overlooking the Hotel Blue Sea Anton (the sister hotel) as the night drew in people in the opposite hotel may not be aware but when you turn your bathroom lights and go about your business it’s like a scene form a street in Amsterdam, you see everything from the good the bad and the ugly and the very very strange.
On a serious note if you have booked or going to book at this hotel please, please DON’T I have never stayed in such a bad hotel in all my life. I am also not one of these people not to complain on review sites in fact last year we went to Malta on a budget hotel break and had a fantastic time costing just over £210 each. If I hadn't experienced Malta prior to this hotel I would never return.

Get your money back, change hotels do anything but go to this hotel, unless you’re a fly where you will love it.

Room Tip: Don't pick a room here you will regret

Just returned from great holiday in Malta staying at The Blue Sea Santa Maria Hotel
A big thank you to all the staff who were extremely pleasant and helpful nothing was any trouble.
The swimming pool and pool area was clean with crystal clear pool water all the time with plenty of sunbeds. There was a vast improvement in the dinning during the weeks stay with ample choice of menu. The hotel is a little dated as many of the hotels in Malta are but the bedrooms were clean with linen changes every four days all in all NOT BAD AT ALL

Room Tip: pool rooms lower floors

We were booked into the Blue Sea Santa Maria in Bugibba. I had read the reviews before we had gone and was really disturbed by what I had read. The night we arrived we went into the hotel. It was depressed, unkept and not painted. The receptionist was very friendly. We handed over our papers. She went onto the computer and then told us that we were to go over the road to the San Anton. We walked over to the hotel. The receptionist there to was very friendly and polite. She checked us in and told us were our room was. Up we went to the room. When we went in and had a look around we were pleasently surprised. As we had been told that this hotel wasnt much better. The room was well stocked up with clean towels, toilet rolls and soap. Our room was over the swimming pool which was nice. We found out that there was nightly entertainment which was fine. It started at 21.00 and ended at 23.00. That was good because when you went to bed there was no noise. The food as we found as the week went on was the same. Now in saying that we always found something that we coulkd eat. The pool was kept clean even though there was a mist in the bottom of the pool. The bar at the pool always ran out of drinks which should not have happened as any clients that were all-inclusive had already pre-paid for the drinks when they paid for the holiday. There were alot of complaints about managment of the hotels. I forgot to say that the Blue Sea Santa Maria and the San Anton are sister hotels. If they ran out of drink in one place they should have had enough in the sister hotel to bring over to the other hotel.I feel that even though I have spoken of the San Anton I will write about the Blue Sea Santa Maria.

Room Tip: Rooms to the poolside are quiet.

Whilst our 10 night stay at the Santa Maria in august 2013 we did have quite a few problems but the manager upgraded us to all inclusive from half board to compensate this and we didn't let it spoil our holiday. Would definitely go Malta again but would not stop at this hotel which is a shame really as it has potential to be good. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool and we met some great people. Like most people say the food is not great so you might want to eat else sometimes a change and we found there was a lot of flies. Rooms are clean but basic and only have ceiling fan which you willl need on constant as iit is hot. Overall we did get a good deal price wise so if you want something a little more luxurious you'll need to pay more.

We arrived at this hotel at 9 30 in the evening , our transfer had to point out the entrance to the hotel as there was no name on the hotel and no entrance sign. when we had struggled up the steps with our luggage we pushed the door open and saw a man with his head on the reception desk who appeared to be asleep.
when we spoke he grunted then lifted his head up and said over there and pointed to the door ,we tried to explain we were guests with a booking for the hotel ,he repeated over there get out.
apparently we had been transferred to their sister hotel the san anton across the road but we had not been informed and knew nothing of this until we were told at the reception of the other hotel

No TV's as advertised in the santa maria hotel, not even the chapels tv and games lounge were open, as hotel has been closed for 9 yrs and only opened in July. So they were doing repairs while admitting customers. there were flies all over the food, hot and cold, if ya can call the hot food hot. this hotel only deserves 2 stars at most. We had to rent a fan as rooms only have a ceiling fan which is not enough. no air con in rooms. No entertainment in santa maria, you had to go to its sister hotel san anton across the street. Santa maria didn't even have music. and no matter what you paid, if you complained the answer was ''you paid for the cheaper hotel'' NEVER AGAIN would we go there, not even for free

Room Tip: poolside room above level 1
