We stayed at this budget hotel for one week (last week). Reception is pleasant and clean and staff were friendly enough, the outside area by the pool is a nice area and well maintained. We didn't pay 5* prices and therefore did not expect 5* facilities but I did expect it to be clean - my mistake!
At check in, we left a €15 deposit for the TV remote, €7 deposit for the safe key and paid €20 to use the in-room safe for the week. If you want late check out (3pm) you can for an extra €15 but they also have a luggage storage room available for use free of charge.
We were on the 3rd floor, at the back facing onto another hotel. The room was big with 2 double beds, wardrobe, safe, tv, dressing table and 2 wicker chairs. The room was ok for the price although was not very clean and not a particularly comfortable or welcoming room- take some flash wipes! Clean towels were provided every other day but bedding was never changed and they did not clean the room at all despite making reception aware of this fact. There was no attention to detail, for example, they'd painted the ceiling and the paint that went onto the tiles was just left there! When we arrived the radiator was making a lot of noise so we complained. The receptionist was going to move us as the radiator control knob to turn it on or off was missing but the night manager came with a wrench and turned the radiator off. We were told to go to reception in the morning to have it turned on and then tell them again when it needed to be turned off. Gave up in the end and just left it off. Soundproofing between rooms is good but the noise from outside and from the corridor is horrendous.
The restaurant - the food was ok for the money. There was always a good selection and it was warm. For breakfast there's a choice of yoghurt and cereal, cold ham and cheese, apples and oranges, breads and toast and full English to choose from. The coffee is terrible though. Dinner is generally a roast meat, chicken dish, fish dish, vegetable dish, potatoes, 2x pasta, chicken nuggets, rice/couscous or noodles, salad selection (including left overs from the day before mixed with mayo and vegetables), soup and desserts. The food is ok and you can generally find something to suit. The restaurant itself was not the cleanest place; there were dirty mirrors when we arrived and they were still dirty the day we left. I generally sat at the same table for breakfast and ended up cleaning marks off the tablecloth from a couple of days previously. Restaurant staff were pleasant enough - most of them anyway.
The bar was my worst nightmare! It was dirty and smelled and in a bit of a state of disrepair. They don't have a great choice of drinks i.e. no tonic water at all!!!!!! but ok if you want the usual beer or spirits. The bar staff were a great bunch - most of them Spanish. The entertainment was shocking; Bingo at 9pm followed by karaoke or a quiz- Alright if you like that kind of thing.
All in all, if you want a bargain break then you could do worse - but you really do just have to make the best of it. A lot of people here book in for weeks or months and some people rarely leave the hotel, spending a lot of time in the bar. The Buggiba area is so quiet this time of year, you have to take a bus to find any entertainment but with a weeks bus ticket at €6.50 and a great bus service with maps available, this wasn't an issue for us. This has the making of a really good hotel but they need to pay more attention to detail and up their game a bit. It's almost like they've just given up!
Pay more and go elsewhere.
