“Excellent food and service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

As mentioned elsewhere this is a nice small restaurant located in a side street on the left just before you reach the square in Bugibba. An excellent mix of starters followed by a Lamb Madras meal was delicious with attentive service. A bugbear with many restaurants however, was that a cheap bottle of wine was four times the price in the local supermarket.

“There's no turning back!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

New madras just keeps luring you back for more Indian culinary delights! We ve been returning to this gem of a restaurant for the past years and I can honestly say that I ve eaten through most of their menu. The food is cooked to perfection by the ever beaming chef patron Mutthu. Should you require anything that's not on the menu or if u wish to change any ingredient, then ask for Karthik, the chef' son who runs the front of house flawlessly. He s also the person to ask if you're looking for a particular wine to match your food choice. The place can get quite busy in weekends so booking is highly recommended. Rest assured you ll love this genuine place which is tucked away just minutes from Bugibba square. Oh! And if you feel like a refreshing home made dessert to quell the fiery Indian dishes, ask for Mutthu's famous 'Lassi' which is a yoghurt based drink. I doubt you ll find it anywhere else on the island! I can't wait to return for our Indian treat. Thank you! Owen, Therese and baby Lucija

“Don't miss out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

The New Madras chef/owner is from, you guessed it Madras and his son Kartik is front of house at this unassuming restaurant tucked away in a side street on the left as you walk down into Bugibba square from the inland side.

We have been coming to Malta for many years and had stopped looking for the elusive great Indian meal, as we have over the years, been underwhelmed by the standard of Indian cuisine available in most parts of this lovely island and particularly in the wider St Pauls Bay area.

We are not “curry snobs” but do know what we like having spent many years living and working in the UK’s “Balti Triangle” We always have the same request when trying somewhere new, even if our choices are not on the menu. We opted for a New Madras take away earlier this week and weren't disappointed.

Our mixed tandoori starter for two had several, succulent and large chunks of meat and a couple of excellent spicy mince samosa finished off with several onion bhaji’s which were well cooked. The starter was a bit short on salad, mint sauce or similar dressing but otherwise very good.

We followed this with a Chicken Tikka Masala, which we asked to be a little sweeter than standard, this was no problem for the chef and was absolutely delicious. Chicken Tikka Dopiaza was not on the menu but the chef said he would make it for me and I asked for it to be Madras strength with extra fresh coriander. This was bang on for taste and strength and had the extra coriander I asked for, although thoroughly delicious, it was closer to a Chicken Tikka Madras really as there would need to be much more onion to describe it properly as Dopiaza but that is only a minor criticism

Other reviews have said that the pilau rice was expensive at 5 euro, but we agree with another reviewer who said it is easily enough for two. The pilau well done and contained sultanas unusually. We asked for two chapattis and a peshwari nan we didn't get chapattis but did get a keema nan and a peshwari nan both of which were excellent and stuffed full of spicy and sweet flavors respectively. Don’t be put off by some reviewers who have said the meal was greasy, as the “grease” they refer to is ghee and in our view an absolutely requirement in many authentic Indian dishes.

Total cost of the above was a reasonable 46 euro. We even had some left for a delicious breakfast straight from the fridge the next morning. If you have never had left over curry cold from the fridge you are really missing a treat so try it! So will we go back to the New Madras, most definitely, this is by far and away the best Indian meal we have eaten in the St Pauls Bay area since we started visiting over 20 years ago. Well done Chef and Kartik.
