“Do not stay in this place-it is not a 3* hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

we have just come back from a 2 week holiday in Malta - what a lovely island (1/7/13-15/7/13). This establishment however is nothing more than a budget hostel and that is being generous! Our room was dingy, the air conditioning never worked just whirred and made a noise - luckily we had a fan, which broke down twice, I think it had something to do with the tape holding the wires together!. The towels were nothing more than shredded rags not fit to clean the floors with. We had no flushing toilet for 4 days, (the staff were condescending enough to tell us we did not know how to flush it properly) they did provide a bucket so we could flush the toilet! The toilet pipe work was leaking and flooded the bathroom, part of the main room and out into the corridor. The bed linen did not fit the bed! Tried complaining to the management, could not get a manager for 3 days, reception staff were condescending bordering on rude. There appears to be no person in charge and no one to take responsibility. The place is dirty and unkempt, you can write your name in the grime around the pool edge, the tiles are cracked and broken in the pool area, the sunbeds have seen better days. The corridor areas are dirty, the toilets in reception have spinning taps, the coffee machine does not work properly, thankfully we were room only so did not have to navigate the catering facilities, nearly every time you approached reception there was someone else there complaining of some aspect of TBH. The list is endless ....but hopefully you get the picture - and if the management of this establishment wish to respond to this please feel free because you could not be bothered to respond to us whilst we were your clients - still NEVER AGAIN.

Room Tip: Do not say you have not been warned - disgusting

Basically, we are pleased with this hotel. We were accommodated in rooms on the sixth floor, almost all the days we used new towels. Rooms are cleaned every day. Really good value for money. Only the quality of the food poorly. We are happy that we chose only the breakfast. Staff pleasant and helpful. Especially good connections with other places in the country. Definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Better rooms in higher floor

My partner and I have just returned, having spent 10 days in the Bugibba Hotel. Our first impression was promising as we walked into a spacious, clean, air conditioned reception area. This impression did not last ! Our room was quite spacious and had its own small kitchen area, however we would not have used the kitchen and its utensils until we had cleaned it ourselves because it was dirty and grubby. The bathroom was the same. Electrical tape around the shower head to stop it from leaking, but it still leaked. Towels not replaced daily as they say they are, When they were replaced they were torn and stained, and the toilet was YUK !! The room was supposed to be cleaned every 4 days, and so was done twice while we were there, however the bathroom was not touched and the room had a "spit and polish". Would definitely not recommend this hotel, however Malta is an interesting and lovely Island to visit.

Dear Sonia, Thank you for your review. I would like to clarify that any booking for any of our apartments, has a cleaning schedule of once every 4 days; hence having received maid service twice during your stay with us, would have been correct. Our towels have recently been revamped; they are supposed to be changed daily, so I am disappointed to hear that you did not have this service. We endeavour to ensure that all guests have clean towels everyday, so much so, that we also keep clean fresh towels everyday at reception desk, in case, any guest requires additional ones. Our Housekeeping Department is usually praised by our guests - I am surprised by your comments that the bathroom was not cleaned sufficiently. The TBH would like to thank you for your review and we will endeavour to take the points raised by yourself in view of improving our standards going forward. Thanks, Sean

My boyfriend and I (both 21 years old) stayed at the Bugibba Hotel for a week between 3 July and 11 July on an all-inclusive stay. After reading many negative reviews on here before going, we were incredibly worried about what we had booked ourselves into! However, I can honestly say that we were pleasantly surprised at our experience of the hotel. Many reviews on here complain about the decor and interior of the hotel, which holds some truth, as the hotel is in need of a bit of a refurbishment but it is not as bad as has been made out and they were in the middle of doing painting work when we stayed.

Many people also complain about the cleanliness of the hotel, which was one of my major issues as I am a bit of a clean freak, so I was anxious about staying somewhere grimy! Again, I was also pleasantly surprised as our rooms were cleaned every day to a good standard and our towels (which were brand new and very fluffy) were also changed everyday. I have been to many other hotels which have been a higher star rating and have not had as good a cleaning service as this hotel. We did have a cockroach in our room for a few nights; but after reading so many reviews complaining about cockroach issues I think I would have been disappointed if I had not seen one! The cockroach was no harm, we named him 'Eric' and he lived under our wardrobe.

Our only negative comment is with regards to the all-inclusive food package; Breakfast and lunch were somewhat disappointing and rather bland, so we tended to skip these. Dinner was good, however it became a bit repetitive after a while. The all-inclusive drinks selection was also limited, however we really enjoyed the local beer and wine, so definitely got our moneys worth from those alone!

We only spent two full days at the hotel, by the pool, which were, at times, quite noisy due to the loud radio and Taz's, the entertainment man, running commentary throughout the day. However, this hotel has a lively and friendly atmosphere, best suitable for young couples and families. To those staying in Bugibba; you should get out and explore the vast amount of history and culture that the country offers; I highly recommend going to Mdina, Valletta and Gozo.

Whilst The Bugibba Hotel is certainly not the most luxurious hotel in Malta, it does not deserve the harsh and somewhat pathetic reviews that it has received. I think those who choose to waste their holiday taking pictures of a little bit of rust, a cockroach or a broken tile should get out and explore Malta. Bear in mind that you pay for what you get and that if you are expecting five-star luxury at a 3-star price, then you are quite delusional.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to have a pleasant and cheap stay in Malta. However if you have the money, eat out!

Room Tip: Go for a room with a pool view.

Dear Kerry B
Thanks very much for your frank review. I feel that you have hit the nail on the head when stating that this hotel has a lively and friendly atmosphere best suited for young couples and families. Thanks very much also about the compliments you made regarding our Housekeeping Department, especially coming from yourself, since you say, you are clean freak! That means a lot to us and I will be passing your comment to the HK supervisor. Thanks, Sean

Booked an all inclusive 10 day holiday with my husband at the Bugibba Hotel. First impression was not bad with a large bright reception area. Sadly it went downhill from there. We were told we were in an economy room and I could see why! Very small dark room, with a view of a wall with peeling paint 6 ft away from the window. Phone did not work, tiles on bathroom floor in poor repair. Following day we paid to upgrade our room and were given one with a balcony overlooking the pool. 200% better, but still not great. Air con unit was very very very noisy and did not work, taps were cracked, shower had no pressure so difficult to get a decent flow and for 3 days no hot water, Bed was broken. Toilet did not flush properly, and despite reporting it, did not get fixed. Lots of students staying there with minimal supervision. They were very noisy both daytime around pool and night time in each others rooms, banging doors and shouting. Reported to security but nothing happened. Towels were in short supply and 7/10 days were not supplied to our room. We had to go to reception to ask for them and sometimes reception had non either. The towels when we did get them were little more than worn out off white rags, which ripped when we dried ourselves with them. If we wanted to have the full choice of breakfast and dinner we had to get there early before the students otherwise there was very little left. Lunch was served from a pool bar and there was a different and limited choice of food for all inclusive guests, not what one usually gets on an all inclusive holiday. Felt that guests who were paying as they went got a better service and better choice of food. Hotel management need to decide whether they are running a self catering facility, a hostel for school children or a hotel that serves all guests the same whether they be B & B, half board or all inclusive. The pool area was slightly better with plenty of sunbeds although we were slightly put off by cockroaches, broken, uneven and risen tiles on sunbathing area and green slimy grouting in the large pool. Entertainment was poor although all credit to the Hotels entertainer who worked very hard on his own with limited resources, doing the best he could. Jacks bar was a redeeming feature with a friendly bar maid and we spent a fair bit of time there when it was open. The hotel gives out an information leaflet to guests upon arrival and on the back page gives a direct in house telephone number to contact a manager - however when we tried the number to discuss our concerns an automated voice informed us the number did not exist!! This was our first trip to Malta - would I come back, probably but not to this hotel. I could not in all honesty recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: go to another hotel - sorry cannot find anything good to say

As the title says, it's not as bad as some of the reviews below as making out. I booked with a partner for a week in a Studio B&B. Room was decent sized, had an oven, fridge, toaster etc. Bathroom was okay, could have been cleaner around the bath though. We had a balcony overlooking the pool which was nice. The beds weren't great though, they were comfy enough however their idea of a double bed is two singles pushed together, in our case one bed was higher than the other leading to a slightly uncomfortable nights sleep. Breakfast was limited, ham, cheese, bread, yoghurt, beans, egg... that's about it, and after speaking to people on all inclusive, I'm glad we only booked B&B. Despite what people are saying about cockroaches, I saw one in the whole time I was there, that was by the pool at night time so kind of expected in a hot country. On the whole though, we didn't pay much so value for money was okay, average hotel, reception staff rude and unwelcoming but the bar staff (especially in Jack's Bar) were lovely. Needs a refurbishment big time, we won't be going back
