“you get what you pay for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

As we only paid 240 for the entire all inclusive holiday I found the hotel very good. You could always find something to eat and the staff worked very hard. The only complaint is that the restaurant is a little chaotic - there were many elderly disabled people in the hotel and the fact that everything was very tightly packed into the restaurant made it difficult to move about at times. for them and for us.The young barmen were very pleasant but a couple of the elderly ones could do with a lesson on being polite Queues got in the way of being able to get coffee or soup etc. or even the waiters being able to get into their kitchen with dishes. The rooms were very nice and cleaned well. Sometimes the girls in reception needed to be a little bit more helpful and more knowledgeable but on the whole not bad. Entertainment again was not bad - you could dance most nights to the music but be aware fri and sat the dancefloor is taken over by Maltese couples from the other end of the island. They are very nice people but as they are ballroom dancers there isnt room to do your own thing. On the whole an ok hotel.

Just returned from a five day break at the Hotel, and having read previous reviews was fearful of taking the holiday at this Hotel.I need not have been ,because our stay was a good one, even though overall the weather was poor. True, the Hotel is over graded at four star, but it was very clean, the food was good, and our upgrade to all inclusive was very worthwhile (we paid for all inclusive).Adequate heating was available in the standard bedroom, and evening entertainment excellent. With one exception the staff were very pleasant. My wife and I,together with our friends, fail to see the volume of criticism being justified....at least on the basis of our experience.
Well done the Canifor....we will return!! Incidentally,we are worldwide travellers and do appreciate what is good and what is bad.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Pool have a pleasant view and were quiet in our experience.

may i first say that we are frequent travellers of all world destinations and feel i have to reply to an awful lot of bad reviews regarding the Canifor.I dont understand people that pay buttons for a holiday and expect to get 5 star hilton standards on arrival we were greeted pleasently at reception and shown to our room which was clean and for the next week fresh towels daily and the room well cleaned the reviews i read about tv channels etc , get a life / if you want coronation street etc on your hols maybe Blackpool would be more appropriate Ok the hotel may have the older generation staying for longer periods and the entertainment may cater more for that generation but i can tell you it was better than a lot of 5 star hotels in other destinations we have been. The food was very good ok a bit repetative but good choice and well cooked and presented breakfast was a good hearty english and healthy options if so we were all inclusive and had a good choice of drinks ok the staff in the hotel were not slapping their thighs laughing and joking like an 18-30 hotel but were very pleasant and helpfull overall value for money was excellent and for all you negative writers get a life and stop bringing these sort of hotels down if you get a bad one by all means complain but hotels such as the Canifor dont deserve these reviews we would return again and the 4 of us are not near the pension age

Room Tip: rooms to the side of the building a bit noisy in morning with bin lorries etc but hey a good alarm c...

Stayed here for the 3rd time over Xmas & new year, thinking that it may be different as we stayed 5 nights AI & a week half board in a superior room which we paid extra for, however AI over Xmas was a waste of money as it was actually unpleasant staying in the hotel for the sake of free drinks as you couldn't get a seat at all as it's overrun by Maltese people who have a gala dinner which they cram in after ours & I can only hope that theirs was better than ours as the food on normal nights is usually better than the gala nights & it was so crowded that they stuck myself & my husband to sit with people we didn't know at all making us feel trult uncomfortable! Another big issue that people should be warned about is that now reception staff have been primed to say that superior rooms are only so because of the amenities, ironing board & kettle etc, not large rooms on the 5th floor as it says on the Canifor's own website, od course having stayed there twice before we were aware of this but it still took us 3 days to get the appropriate room change to 5th floor & we met people who had been duped by this & were staying in tiny rooms but with the amenities, what a lot to pay for a kettle! Once you are in 5th floor rooms they are a good size with a nice view & have had the new flat screen TVs fitted which are much better but should have had bigger ones for those large rooms as thay are very small! Food is still the same canteen food which is doled out you with a total lack of grace or expertise I've heard it argued many times that you can always find enough to fill you but it hardly makes for a good holiday. Reception staff were pleasant apart from the lying whilst restaurent staff are almost all restaurant are abysmal, the only ones that I can say are good are the cleaning staff on the 5th floor. This is my final review of the Canifor as we will not be staying here again as it's always a battle to get waht you paid for & with it's unsafe packed restaurant with poor food & the awful entertainment, I can asure you there are better places to stay on Malta.

Room Tip: Fifth floor!

Agree with Merv about the Maltese invasion of the entertainment area - many of whom bring their own drinks! This made the area dangerously overcrowded and unpleasant for the paying residents many of whom could not get a seat. The entertainment needs updating to suit the clients - who wants the same jokes and music so old fashioned even the pensioners complain. One couple of "entertainers" well past their best.

The room was kept nicely by the very helpful hard working maid with frequent changes of towels and bedding. Food had too many dishes swimming in gravy to keep warm. Needs less quantity and better quality. Only one barman appeared to be cheerful - the others didn't smile. Many staff appeared to be young inexperienced with poor hand hygiene wiping their noses and running their hands through their hair and into their mouths - then dealing with the tables! The waitress taking the drinks orders had more food on her waistcoat than left on the plates.

Top tip if you want an omelette have one in the evening - for some strange reason it is 100% better than the lunch time ones. Was on all inclusive and the drinks although plentiful were very weak.

Room Tip: Over reception in winter for sun, in summer overlooking pool. Higher for less noise and not on the s...

after 7pm all the local maltese people take over the dance room, take all the seats, take up the dance floor, and probably have 1 bottle of water between 4 all night, We the holiday makers pay for our stay at this hotel and feel completely pushed out. I respect this is there island. however this was our holiday that we paid a lot of money for, where would the island be without the tourists.xmas day and new years day we where pushed into the pizza place, the food was cold, the seating was rock hard and also the room was cold this was because all the locals were having a gala dinner in the main restaurant. we were made to feel like second class citizens. The midday lunch is not recommended as your stuck in a little corner and everything is with chips. The cleaning in the accommodation wasnt the best. the floor was very slippy in the bathroom so i had to put clothes on the floor so we didnt slip. we had a new tv fitted however this didnt work either. I have travelled to malta 4 times in the past 4 years i would never stay at this hotel again or would i recommend it to anyone. i spent my 3 week holiday wishing i had stayed at another hotel. also a lot of the facilities offered that this hotel were closed.

Room Tip: dont stay here

My partner and my son stayed in two apartments at the Canifor, the only thing about it for its rating the food was reasonable that is if you were able to get to your table without colliding with someone else trying to do the same thing. You either had a plate or soup dish which was too hot to handle or one that was stone cold so that the hot meal was cold by the time that you ate it. It would have been nice to have a spoon to stir your coffee instead if a piece of plastic. My son and partner are both disabled but there was no assistance to help up the steps to the front foyer until someone I believe he was the handyman saw our plight and assisted us with our cases, both my partner and I are in our seventies. The house need to be educated on how to make beds and clean the utensils in the apartment had to be washed before we uses the, egg cups still had egg around there rims for how long ago I dread to think . The sheets were too small for the beds and seeing the rents in them they need renewing. The Christmas eve dinner was a total disaster as far as organisation is concerned and the New Year one wasn't far short. Although the evening entertainment was quite good if you took dinner late you could not get a seat because the locals were allowed in and there were no seats.I asked the duty staff how i could get to the Marsa race track he did not know when I said it was near a park and ride I was told there was only one park and ride on the island i knew of three. We were not advised by the hotel that on Christmas Day and New years Day that although the local buses ran the did not do so between noon and 1500hrs so we along with others were stuck in Valetta until service was resumed.. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Don't Go
