great hotel very spacious rooms with balcony facing the bay. Had the buffet evening meal which was fine but the italian just across from the front door is excellent. The hotel is well placed for the front and also just 200 yards from the bus terminal giving access to the whole island. Only 2.60 per day irrespective of where you go. The hotel was vibrant and the rooms were spotless. Will stay here again.
The people in the hotel and in general were superb - they could give lessons in customer care. Whenever we ate in a cafe payment was only made when you left. They are so trusting - on one occasion at an outsidecafe we had to find them to pay - a massive change from home.
The cost of a cup of coffee was one euro!
We will definitely go again

Room Tip: our room was on a higher floor which makes sure you are not disturbed by the entertainment particul...

Our second time at the San Antonio and once again, a very nice stay.

Arrived on Sunday afternoon and after a quick and professional check in, we were in our room on the fourth floor with sea views.

A small problem of the shower not working correctly was quickly rectified and the rest was a pleasure.

We will definately use this hotel again.

Room Tip: go as high as possible for the sea views

The hotel is comfortable and clean and overall if you want a 3star feel, then this is the one for you. However I'm not sure the website is a realistic view of what the hotel is really like. The indoor pool and spa are definitley the best feature, but it's all slightly over crowded and the food is well, good for a few days and then gets slightly boring. Smiley faced potatoes for breakfast made me cringe. Although my kiddies were happy! Forget the beautiful pictures of dessert on the website, think more neon brake brother puds!

Good location and good staff. Not a 4 star, but a good 3 - decor is a bit tired, the rooms dated and pool area basic. Not a lot of space around the dining room or pool areas - if the hotel was busy (i.e. in the summer) it would have been a nightmare!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool are better.

Have just returned from our second stay and it was jsut as good as our first time.Rooms are a little dates but are being decorated etc now but the staff and food is excellent. We have stayed in many hotels in Malta and this is by far the best 4 star.

Room Tip: It is worth having a sea view room if possible

2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

My husband and I recently stayed at the San Antonio Hotel and Spa. We were looking forward to our stay and decided to pay a little extra for a sea view suite. What we payed for is not at all what we received.

When we arrived at our room after 20 hours of travelling, we were greeted by a very small and dated room with two beds pushed together, wall to wall cheap carpeting and a garde-robe that took up most of the space. After complaining about this, we were moved to an actual suite, equally dated but much larger. Unfortunately, we spent some time in Gozo in the middle of our stay and upon our return we were, again, given a room as opposed to a suite but by then we just wanted to be done with our stay at this hotel and head home so we stayed put and said nothing.

As a previous recent reviewer has mentioned, it was incredibly hot and the hotel refused to turn on the air conditioning. Since we were on one of the upper floors, it was impossible to breathe much less sleep, even with the balcony door open. I had to request a good old fashioned fan so that at least we had some air movement (the rooms also have ceiling fans but with the heat wave we were experiencing, this was not enough). Also, whilst waiting for someone in the lobby at one point, I noticed the staff carrying another fan up to someone else's room so we were not the only ones who were uncomfortable.

Also as stated by other reviews, the breakfast is very "canteen" like and extremely noisy, with clattering plates and people rushing around with their heads cut off. A suit of armour and a good dose of Prozac would therefore be helpful before going down to the dining room in the morning otherwise you will come out feeling stressed and ready to mow down anyone in your path.

Decor of the hotel was extremely dated. The San Antonio claims to have been refurbished within the past ten years but it is obvious that all that was done was a patch up job as the ventilation is ancient, the dated wear and tear carpets in some of the rooms are all patched up and moldy and the bedspreads & mattresses are right out of a motel in the seventies (quite nostalgic actually).

Overall impression of this, at most, three star hotel:

1. This hotel caters mainly to large wholesale groups and owner timeshare clients. This means that if you are someone walking in off the street, they will try to fit you in between their main clientele. This was glaringly obvious and invariably why we ended up paying for something we only received during part of our stay and only after insisting that we get what we paid for.

2. The Hotel San Antonio and Spa is in serious need of refurbishment. It was upgraded within the last ten years or so but this was a minor patch up job and only the common areas have benefitted from these recent renovations (lobby, pool, bar etc..). Rooms therefore remain extremely outdated with air conditioning systems and fans that are in poor working order. The bathrooms are decent for the most part but please note that the water is not potable (Malta has always had water problems but I am not sure if this is the case today). Many rooms have wall to wall cheap carpeting and none of the balcony doors have mosquito netting so if you wish to keep your balcony door open at night (especially due to the lack of air conditioning), you take your chances with the Maltese "wirdien" (huge flying coachroaches), flies and mosquitos.

3. The staff is professional, hard working and very conscientious. However, as the saying goes, "you can't shine [--]" and they are trying to provide four star service with two star equipment. It is also quite obvious that they are under strict orders not to admit to any errors, even when a situation warrants a simple, "Our apologies for the oversight, we will rectify this immediately", after all, mistakes happen to everyone and customers understand this. Most clients would prefer this over a vehement denial that anything is wrong.

4. The rating of four stars is extremely deceiving and should be changed to reflect the hotel's true status. This would avoid any disappointment and people will know exactly what they are getting. If you are looking for a basic "Holiday Inn" type of experience (clean basic rooms, canteen breakfast, a pool and a bar) then this is your place. If you are looking for a true four star hotel then pass this over and look at the five star hotels instead. During our stay I was told by some of my Maltese relatives that there is a VAST difference in Malta between four star and five star ratings .. something I wish I had known prior to booking.

5. Also be advised that the hotel has some rather archaic administrative practices, such as requesting a deposit upon booking and full payment of your stay upon arrival. They will also require a photocopy of your passport or identification card (for Europeans) so if you are uncomfortable with this (as most North Americans are), find another hotel (not all hotels have this practice and the law does not require the photocopying of personal documents by hotel staff, however, by law hotels must keep the information on the hotel registration card for a period of ten years).

In short, my stay at the San Antonio Hotel and Spa was rather disappointing and my expectations might not have been so thoroughly dashed had I been aware of the items outlined above. Hopefully this review will serve to inform others rather than trash the hotel (which is not my intention). For those of you who want a good basic, clean hotel, this is a good value for money but be warned that you will not find a four star experience here.
