“Could (and Should) be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2014

Listed as 4* but this hotel falls short in a number of areas. The hotel is situated on the edge of St. Paul's bay, a few minutes walk from the centre of Bugibba and overlooking the busy marina.
Room facilities need to be addressed. Beds and towels are changed each day and (if it works - heaven help you if it doesn't) air conditioning is supplied without charge. But no tea/coffee making facilities are provided, no hair driers in room and t.v offers limited English speaking channels (14 in all with Euronews, 3/4 film channels and a radio channel). There is a small fridge.
Bedding consists of a top and bottom sheet and heavy blanket and heavy cover, far to warm for Malta's climate and you may need extra coathangers. Some pillows are well past their 'use by' date and are badly stained.
There is an iron and ironing board available to all, situated in the corridors.
During the night, particularly if you have a room close to, the noise coming from the lift machinery can cause quite a level of disturbance (particularly early hours/early morning). The lift system is due to be modernised at the end of the year.
'Chapel' rooms are the ones that (fairly obviously) face the main road at the front of the hotel where the Church is. It can get quite noisy sat on the balconies and could be the place where you wouldn't want to sit and enjoy a glass of wine.
If your'e not fortunate enough to have a room overlooking the bay (at the rear of the hotel), it will cost you 7 euros per person to 'upgrade'.
There were lots of complaints about the standard of breakfast on offer. Cereals consisted of coco pops or cornflakes, fruit was sliced orange (no other for four days) and tinned fruit. No other fresh fruit, bananas and no yoghurts. Bread is supplied.
Cold meat and cheese slices were on offer and cooked items were egg, Malta sausage, beans and tomatoes. On Sunday they push the boat out and offer slices (of what they call) bacon. Apparently, all foodstuffs are 'bought in'. Coffee and tea are provided. A toaster is available.
We bought our own fruit/yoghurt etc and this wasn't a problem.
The pool area was very nice, some sunbeds were badly in need of renovation/removal but the area provided a relaxing time in the sun(or shade). The pool is cleaned regularly.
Location wise it's good for the situation over the bay, but to find shops and a good range of restaurants you may feel the need to go into town.
All in all, a pleasant stay but wouldn't rush back unless I knew that the hotel and it's offerings have been updated somewhat.

Room Tip: Steer clear of rooms next to the lifts.

Greatest spot on the island, if you get a room with sea view. Rooms clean but don't upset the chamber maid, I must of as the beds were only pulled over to look if they had been made and a tissues that had fallen under the bedside cabinet was with us till the end of are stay. The restaurant was a joke , the food was at best woeful Every morning the eggs had been burned, the beans were of poor quality and cold and the sausages looked like a burned offering. The last nail in the coffin was when I came down to breakfast to see a sign on the food table reading SORRY BUT WE HAVE NO BUTTER FOR BREAKFAST . When complaining to the management I was told it is not are problem, go and take it up with the catering staff they are an outside company and are nothing to do with the hotel. 4 star hotel 2 star.
Recommend , if you stay here, go room only, eat out, take your own towels.

The Gillieru is poor value for money. A stark bedroom with very few amenities and the worst TV I have come across in a hotel in ages, an almost unwatchable picture and 12 tedious Maltese channels. There was no hair dryer, no remote control for the TV, no tea or coffee making facilities. The breakfast served in the very tired 1st floor dining room was poor. An antique toaster that did not pop up - so eyes peeled, or burnt toast. Burnt sausages, rubbery scrambled egg and cremated bacon. The coffee was lukewarm, as was the milk for cereal! The pool is pleasant enough - but try getting a pool towel.
Also watch for chambermaids letting themselves into your room without knocking - happened to me twice, once whilst I was sat on the toilet - very embarrassing for both of us!
Not a hotel I will be returning to or recommending.

This hotel is clean and the walk in showers excellent, plenty of hot water.
The waiting on staff are very helpful.
The breakfast need looking at Choice of cereals were limited as the week went on, and tinned pineapple served everyday.

The hotel is situated in a quiet area, although traffic especially busses pass the hotel on a regular basis.

Room Tip: Rooms over looking the bay are probably quieter

Great position overlooking St Pauls Bay, bus stop outside hotel. Rooms clean and comfortable, staff very friendly and helpful. The food lets the hotel down, lots of complaints, but nothing done to improve it.

Room Tip: Rooms are available with sea view at extra cost.

Good hotel nice room with walk in shower. Staff great, always friendly and helpful . Shame about the food! Best have your evening meal elsewhere - maybe breakfast as well as you won't get a full English here. If you like soup and salad that's ok but the mains were bland! No cream or ice cream to go with the apple pie! Nice position overlooking St. Paul's bay and quiet area. Only 10 - 15 mins walk to livelier area. We loved our boat trip on the horn blower and the stop at comino was good for a swim. Water was cold but crystal clear and a beautiful turquoise colour and a small sandy cove.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view at back of hotel.
