“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2010

We booked with Thomas Cook as a Package and had looked at the reviews first they were good and bad so as the hotel was in the area we wanted to stay in we booked .
On arrival check in was very efficient although our rooms were not avaiable at that time (11am) we were told we could leave our luggage in the lobby and they would be taken to our rooms .
when we saw our rooms we were very pleased they were very spacious had tea and coffee making facilities lovely and clean and wonderful views over the pool looking out to sea and St Pauls bay .

The main resturant is very well managed evening meal had soup (choice of two every night ) salad pasta meat choices to suit everyone and vegetables . Deserts to die for about six choices as well as cheese and biscuits .
The breakfast choice was equally as good Fruit juice tea coffee cereals and fruit , also bacon sausage eggs (fried boiled and scrambled ) potatoes beans tomatoes the list goes on , and it is all buffet so you can have as much as you can eat .

The staff on reception was very helpful and courteous at all times as was all the hotel staff .
They have a nice coffee shop overlooking one of the outdoor pools which serve snacks and wonderful coffee at very reasonable prices which is a bonus as most hotels overcharge .
To anyone thinking of booking the Dolmen Resort Hotel dont hesitate as it is one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in .
Malta is lovely too and it was our first time , the people are very friendly .

We stayed at the Dolmen for 7 nights. I booked a suite, which turned out to be two bedrooms (no sitting area) of average hotel standard. The room (6th floor) was a bit dull, but clean, and had a good size balcony with a nice view of the sea. Air condition worked well and beds were comfortable. Quiet at night. Good location (near town and sea).
Breakfast plentiful with choices of cooked breakfast, fruit, cereals, variety of bread etc. Coffee and juice as terrible as all hotels I've been to in Malta.
Pool areas were spacious and clean. Prices in the hotel bar reasonable (at least for a Norwegian).
Staff was helpful
I find it quite disappointing that a hotel of this standard charges you 3,50 € for 60 minutes of Internet connection. This should be included in the room rate at all modern hotels.
TV in room, but a poor choice of channels (unless you're Italian or like American C-movies from the 70s).
If you don't have to spend too much time indoors, the Dolmen is an all right choice if you don't want to spend a fortune. But don't be fooled by the 4 stars; this is not a luxury hotel.

Just arrived back from a 10 night stay at The Dolmen. Stayed there many times before, and again satisfied. We booked 3 superior sea view rooms this time, and asked could they be on high floor and reasonably close together, and our request was duly acknowledged via email, and this is what we got. Staff are lovely helpful & friendly, and I am including EVERYONE in this. For this part of the island with its many attractions, this hotel fits the bill. We have been going to Malta 27 yrs and I think stayed at quite a few grot spots over the years, but after having found the Dolmen a few years ago wouldnt stay anywhere else, because we know what value for money etc we are getting, and have even took parties of 16 people there. My one critism this time if there has to be one is that this time we found the food to be too European for our liking, and longed for plain simple food as an alternative choice, but we managed to be adequatly fed, and there was no need to buy food out.

We booked our visit through Interval International and were allocated an apartment on the third floor. It was like walking into a very poor standard caravan, the furnishings were bench seats with very thin mats as padding. The whole apartment smelled of damp, there were mouldy bath towels draped at the bottom of the balcony doors which would not open. There was no oven only two hot plates and an ancient microwave in the kitchen area. There was a large pink monstrosity of a bath in the bedroom!! The bed was two single wooden frames pushed together with a mattress placed on hardboard base. we obviously complained. We were moved to another apartment this time on the second floor. This had a better view of the bay. The balcony doors actually worked! there was real furniture ie sofa bed and armchair. A cooker in the kitchen area. The bed was the same as previously with one exception....it was infested with cockroaches!
My advice is never visit this place.

First off, anyone who moans about this hotel is one of those people that just cannot enjoy anything and always look for the negative. On arrival we given room 194, a fairly long walk from reception but still on the same level. As you get further away from reception the corridors become a bit tattier and we feared the room would be the same. Thankfully the room was very nice with a private balcony overlooking the whole bay, not bad as we only paid for an inland view. We were B&B and Breakfast was good, hot and plentiful. Only complaint would be bacon only one day and sausages not english, but hey what do you expect. Bread was lovely and fresh and lots of different choices. Staff Great, Pools great and clean, plenty of available sunbeds. All in all a fantastic hotel and would definately go again.

We booked our short break at the Dolmen at a discount rate through Hotels4U.

We weren't expecting much as we booked a room with an inland-view, so half expected to be looking out over a building site. To our delight we discovered that we had been allocated one of the ground floor timeshare apartments that overlook the pool and have a generous patio area with a view across St Paul's Bay.

The apartment was a reasonable size with good appliances, cutlery, fridge, microwave, air-conditioning and TV although the decor was somewhat dated. We found it to be clean and the maid service was thorough almost every day of our stay.

We had chosen a Bed & Breakfast meal plan which was adequate but a little measly (small plates, miniature croissants). We made our own lunch and ate our way around the excellent local restaurants in the evenings, discovering an very good Chinese (Peking something) and a truly gorgeous romantic sea-side spot called the Amazonia, which turned out to be part of the Dolmen Resort.

We spent one afternoon next to the pool which was excellent and had a relaxed atmosphere.

Our sleep was not helped by the trampoline like quality of our mattress and we soon discovered that the sofas in the apartment offered better support. This was after the cranium-piercing sub-bass of the naff hotel entertainment subsided at gone 11pm nearly every night.

Friday night (before we had to get up early to fly home) we were treated to the joy of having a live band playing right next to our bedroom in the Casino, which did not stop till half-midnight, by which time we had decided we would never be coming back to the Dolmen Resort Hotel.

We have just stayed in a one bedroom timeshare apartment ( unit number D396 )exchanged via Interval International. This resort is supposedly a silver standard with Interval but this is the worst apartment we have ever stayed in and strongly disagree with this silver rating.

Things we found wrong are :-
Lounge area furniture was dated, dirty, smelly
Kitchen facilities dated, old cabinets, lack of appliances. 1 x microwave, small combi oven with 2 hot plates, toaster.
There is a socket outlet for the kettle located by the sink which had its wiring exposed showing bare wires, very dangerous.
Bare wires showing in the cable for the electric iron and an ironing board which wouldnt stand up.
In the bedroom there is a jacuzzi bath which has been so badly installed there is silicone sealant everywhere, whilst the bath is standing on big wooden blocks which is visible because the bath panel is so badly fitted.
The bathroom had ants crawling everywhere and this on the 3rd floor of the hotel.
The rest of the hotel facilities we used appeared to be ok but the staff are very rude and didnt seem to want to serve you. I suggest a customer service training session is required.
When we checked out they presented us with a bill for 45 Euros apparently for Electricity use. A charge we feel is very expensive for one week, it would be fairer if they installed a meter and charged you for actual electricity you used not a standard rate.
Good points
Bedding was changed 3 times in the week, and all towels changed daily.

Overall we liked Malta and would return but not to this hotel
