4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014

My wife and I flew to Malta from Edinburgh on January 3 until January 24 and for the first time in six years we changed our hotel venue to that of the Dolmen, the hotel is very nicely situated on the promenade at Qawra and our room was very spacious with a beautiful view over St. Paul's bay.
Our first few days in the hotel complex were spoilt by two families (two sisters) with eleven children between them, the kids were not controlled by the parents and generally allowed to run wild in the dining room and bar even late at night, guests seemed to be more concerned with the children's safety than the actual parents were, it was rumored that these 14 people had been removed from another hotel and transferred into the Dolmen. Luckily for us these families left after 4days. Our final week was met with the invasion of approx three hundred people for the Blue Med Conference
These people seem to meet at the Dolmen on a yearly basis and they literally take over the hotel,we had table reservations for breakfast and evening meals but this did not deter Blue Med from just sitting at the tables that were marked reserved, I am disabled and our seat was reserved near to the buffet for ease of service complaining to waiters etc did not seem to resolve the situation. Apart from these intrusions our stay at the hotel was very good and Malta once again charmed my wife and I.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a sea view room

The Hotel is situated in an ideal position close to St. Paul's Bay and Bus Station. The Hotel is very clean, bedroom and beds very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a wide choice of food, which was of quite a good standard. We would be happy to stay there again, as we considered it good value.

The hotel is a 4 star and the staff are brilliant, very clean hotel, the maids work wonders. excellent views only if you have a seaview room. This time of the year most of the hotel is not open( other restaurants, bars, pools) so you only have one restaurant and after one week was pleased to go out & find different food. Indoor pool small 7 breast strokes from one end to the other and the jaxuzzi's need updating but on the whole experience and after looking at other 4star hotels we were quite happy with the holiday. We were on the fourth floor and was very happy with the facilities.

Room Tip: Seaview for good views, higher floors for less noise from some music nights.

The Dolmen is marketed as a resort. If that means a third world resort hotel - then yep it hits the mark. In general the hotel is run down and aging.

The fourth floor room was worn and dated. The shower is almost a joke (dancing around is the best way to stay wet) and the layout of the bathroom awkward and the towels skimpy. The beds were hard - but that may be a European thing versus a Dolmen thing. Overlooking the rear of the hotel resulted in constant noise from the bus route and street traffic. And the cats in heat down below didn't offer any respite.

In general it doesn't feel well cared for and the bathroom door frame was literally falling off.

But far away the worst experience was the maid service which started with vigorous vacuuming outside the very thin door at 8:15 AM. This was followed very shortly thereafter, e.g., 8:30 AM, by the maid walking in the door after a frighteningly brief knock and wanting to know when I was going to be checking out. And the day prior, if I didn't want my room serviced I had to sign for that all the while wearing shaving cream and boxers.

Finally the air quality is not good - I am not sure if it is the smoking or the air filters or what but my colleague would get congested literally the moment she walked in the room.

Bottom line - it is to be avoided.

The Dolmen is probably as good as it gets at St. Paul's Bay in Malta about 20 minutes from Valetta and 40 minutes from the airport. The scenery is wonderful, overlooking where Paul was shipwrecked in the book of Acts. 27 & 28. We stayed a week. The beds were comfortable, the service was exceptional. The maintenance of the building left a lot to be desired. Paint peeling, our bathroom faucet fell off, the shower and the sliding glass doors leaked, etc. The all-you-can- eat buffet had nice white table cloths, lots of staff, free wine but the food was like college dorm food: mass produced and below par. The cafe however had great food with memorable views. The suites on the 6th floor were much more updated and modern/minimalist than our 5th floor room. While it's about 50F degrees and EXTREMELY windy in January, the sun was out and we enjoyed a nice walk down the promenade to restaurants and shops at Bugibba square. Tip: We enjoyed excellent & reasonably priced Italian food at I Cannoli.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor room, like 5th floor or a suite on the 6th floor, facing the bay.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the food good, and the hotel clean. The room was large and spacious with a superb view of the sea. There is a nice shoreline walkway that goes for a long ways in both directions immediately across the street, which is also a good place to run. The rooms would work best for couples as the floor-to-cieling opaque glass door on the bathroom which does not latch is not as private as one might like if you are there for a conference, for example, and have a roomate that you do not know very well. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the hotel.

Room Tip: The bay side is nice if you can swing it.
