“Like Michelin dining in London ... but with a beach view, more fun and a 30% discount!”
Before our trip, we asked a Maltese friend what the best restaurant on the island was; she surveyed her whole family and Tarragon was their choice. We made a special effort to book in advance, and took a taxi cross island to get here, and it was worth it. Chef Marvin Gauci has a very personal hand on the tiller, flitting back and forth between the kitchen and your tables. He takes time to know you, makes suggestions, customises the menu to your needs. I can't think of another time I've had more direct attention from the guy in charge.
The results were stunning. A variety of starters, because we couldn't decide on just two. The star was a local tuna smoked right at the table. Plenty of other gourmet touches here, like those little spheres of flavour decorating plates, and fish flamed table side, but the show doesn't obscure the fact that this is fine cooking and expert flavour combinations of some exquisite local ingredients. Other top tastes were the creamy rabbit fricassee and the roasted barracuda, fresh from the sea just beyond the windows.
I am fortunate enough to dine at a fair few Michelin star restaurants and this is edging towards that kind of cooking. And yet it's a fun, lively and casual atmosphere, and a lot cheaper than anything comparable back in London. I rate this our best experience in our weekend on Malta, above all the sightseeing!
