Just finished an amazing three day wine tour with Mark and Giselle. This was longer than the normal tours they run but we were consistently amazed by the variety and quality of every winery and lunch spot visited.
I have been fortunate to go to wine tastings and tours in Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, UK as well other locations in Italy - this was the best by a significant margin.
For me a few elements set this tour apart from others:
- Mark's wine knowledge - this guy loves his wine and he knows a huge amount amount each wine plus the winery, e.g. its history, philosophy, aspirations, etc. More important than this knowledge is how he shares it. Here Mark could get a bit more technical and nerdy to meet my needs but also scales things back to suit my Dad's more 'consumption focused' approach.
- Mark & Giselle's relationships with wineries and eateries - they were both greeted very warmly by a broad range of people, some of whom socialised with them outside of the tour environment. This resulted in such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. People wanted us to stay longer (rather than push us out the door) and Mark had to keep a close eye on the time to make sure we weren't late for our next appointment.
- Time spent at each location - most tours / tastings I have been on revolve around a 15-20 minute visit per stop = basically short blurb on each wine + quick taste of 20-30 mills of wine. Not here! Each stop lasted around an 1 hour to 1.5 hours. We would generally only meet with the winemaker or a 2nd-3rd generation family member who owned the vineyard. They happily walked with us around the winery, prepared proper food to taste with the wine, e.g. selections of cheeses, hams, breads, etc.), served up close to a full glass of every wine and answered every question either directly or with the help of Mark's translation
In summary, an outstanding wine experience.
