“Lovely hotel in a typical Tuscan town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Positives:
-quiet, clean, excellent service, good breakfast, great view from the room, tidy/clean pool area, style of the hotel (suited the walled town of Montaione), nice idea to give a free bottle of wine and vouchers for meals

Negatives:
-The restaurant was very pricey, as were lunch snacks, drinks etc, no free wifi in the room, TV was from the stone age ;-), leery pool staff, the hotel isn't 'luxury' so don't pay overboard for the rooms.

We did it without a car which is fine if you're only staying for a couple of days before moving on. The town itself is quite small and quiet but just lovely.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful. The hotel was absolutely a pleasure. The best part of the stay was the staff. They were wonderful and tried to accommode our every need. Dinner at the hotel was delicious with breakfast being the same. There is a small bar available for people wanting to enjoy a drink, in the lobby area. Additionally, there are two different areas of the hotel. One is the old palace, with the typical Tuscan décor. The other is the modern, sleek side. The hotel staff will show you both sides and give you the option to choose the style that fits your needs. The pool, which was GREAT, is located outside of the main building, or the palace. However, there is an underground hallway (nicely decorated) that leads you from the modern side to the pool and main lobby area of the palace. Our room had a great balcony with great views. Internet is only available on the main floor, with the staff happy to accommodate internet needs, by giving a code for access. We had parking as part of our package, which was in an underground garage. I would like to warn people that this hotel and town is for people looking to relax and go “off the grid.” IMPORTANT: You will need a GPS in order to find your way.

The town itself is a very low key Tuscan village. There are just a few restaurants to enjoy, all of which offer delicious options. The Pub, within Montaione, was our favorite part of our stay. Ask the owner for recommendations, and you are sure to get a paper full of great things to do, see and eat in the area. I would recommend him as your concierge to assist with your planning! You can also head to the local wine shop in the piazza to enjoy a glass of wine and people watch in the evenings.

We did a day trip to San Gimignano and decided to get lost within the countryside to do some wine tasting. Both are a must do if you are staying at this hotel.

Overall an amazing, wonderful stay!

We have just returned from Hotel Mannaioni and wanted to thank the superb staff who were friendly, full of advice and always smiling. Daniela and Vincenzo especially were wonderful, great fun and couldn't have been more helpful but everyone including the cleaners, handymen and waiters were great. The hotel itself is a wonderful old building, some of the older rooms could do with a bit of modernising and minor upkeep but we had everything we needed and the classic room we had was spacious and atmospheric. When we asked for anything such as extra hangers we were provided with it immediately. Coffee at breakfast time is our only complaint - it really isn't nice but the waiting staff will bring you lovely coffee from the bar area if you ask for it. The pool was fabulous and a nice place to relax in the sun in the daytime - the hotel provides towels for the pool. Montaione itself is a lovely old Tuscan hill town and although small has a lot of charm and if you relax into the rhythm of village life you will love it. We spent some lunchtimes sitting in the main square drinking prosecco in the sun watching the world go by. There is a lively town market every Friday morning where you can buy fresh bread and cheese and although there are not many shops, there are a couple of lovely ones including a great leather bag shop - Ferracuti on Via Roma and a small cafe on Via Roma that does cheap good cappucinos and amazing Italian hot chocolate. There is also a good ristorante with a panoramic view, a nice fish restaurant and a Scottish pub which really livens up after 11pm. Check out the Museo Civico which has leaflets about free walks (we did a good one in Peccioli 30 mins away by car) and events going on in the area. You are about an hour away by car from all the main cities and large towns so you do need a car, but it is central - we got to Lucca and Siena easily with Sat Nav but go to CastelFiorentino and catch a train to Florence as parking is not easy there. San Giminango is only 20 mins by car and lovely in the evenings although very touristy in the day. If driving to Lucca, make time for the lovely spa centre in San Giuliano about 15 mins from there. In the evenings in Montaione there is not much to do but we expected that in a small hill town; take games/books etc in case of rain in the evenings. We used the pool during the sunny mornings then took off by car in the afternoons to hit the other towns in late afternoon when it gets less hot and less touristy and better for photos in the evening sunlight. Food (and ice cream) everywhere was lovely apart from Florence but we were caught out by sitting in a place too touristy just off one of the main squares. When staying in Montaione in the evenings, consider walking or driving to some of the Agritourismo restaurants nearby - Casa Masi was 8 mins by car and although slightly more expensive, was lovely. We would definitely stay in Una Palazzo Mannaioni again and recommend Montaione. Thanks again to the lovely staff.

Room Tip: There are a variety of rooms and you can choose from the old or new building. We were happy with our...

I stayed for one week in July with my bf through a Voyage Privée pack that included breakfast. We were offered a room in the old building (where reception is) which was quite dated, the bathroom was pretty but for a week long stay seemed a bit long, we requested a room in the new building (across the street, through a passageway past the pool, two sets of elevator and some stairs, we felt like in a James Bond movie accessing the vault), the room was bigger, prettier, everything seem nicer. However, every night there will be an invasion of ants with wings, which we would have to kill and the shower drain didn't work, resulting in a call to reception in the first morning that had two people (maid and maintenance guy showing at the same time to fix it). Reception was very gracious the whole time but nothing was fixed, so we asked for a third room, this was bigger, the shower did drain correctly but the door wouldn't close properly, it could be opened with a strong push, they tried to fix it (my bf stayed waiting for the maintenance guy to get a screwdriver for half an hour as they apparently have the same guy for maintenance and baggage carrying; we wouldn't know since we arrived late at around 10 PM and there was no one to carry our bags) by replacing a screw but to no avail, we were too tired to complain again, so just decided to not leave valuables at the room and trust our good luck. Also the toilet was standing on a pile of tiles ( I have no clue why, didn't care enought to find out)

Parking is easy around the hotel (free public parking right across the street) but there's no human way to park right in front of reception, and the only entrance is by foot, with no signs whatsoever, we circled Montaione twice before deciding to just park and walk ourselves in.

Breakfast buffet, always the same stuff, the juice was made out of instant powder, the fruit wasn't really edible, coffee was good on days that the coffee machine worked properly, otherwise just insist and they will bring you nicer coffee from the bar area, no local foods (being in Italy this seemed sacrilege), all around not bad, but superboring for a week long stay and pretty substandardfor that category of hotel.

Breakfast-in-a-box: we got that on our last day since we had to take an early plane and leave before breakfast started, we got each: 1 bottle of juice, one piece of fruit, 4 pieces of bread and minijars of honey/nutella/jam, I guess we were supposed to spread the stuff with our fingers, no sandwiches, no nothing else, superdisappointed.

Swimming pool closed at 7:30 because they had to set tables nearby for dinner, several of the lounging chairs were broken.

Hotel is great if you get a nice deal below 90 euros a night otherwise it's a big disappointment, this was meant to be our one week yearly treat at a superluxury place and this seemed not worth it at all, specially after the incidents with the rooms and the time lost complaining and walking to and from reception. I don't believe it's my job to check if the shower drains, if there are insects living in the drain, if the door locks, I was on holidays and had to worry in mid July about the innerworking of a luxury hotel.

Thanks for having taken the time to review our hotel.
Knowing the opinion of our guests is essential to improve the quality of our services.
We have 47 rooms situated both in the antique and the modern part. If it's not indicated in the booking form the preference regarding the antique or modern style, we assigned the room according to the kind of booking, hoping to meet our client's taste.
We feel sorry that some inconvenience disturbed your stay and we would like to apology for the room changes. We can assure you that our maids, all very professionally qualified provide to check daily with the highest accuracy making sure that everything works prefectly.
Being in the countryside has its pros and cons, unfortunately there's the possibility to find different kind of insects even though the usual check is carried out .
For what concerns the closing of the door, the fixtures are all new and certified, unfortunately if the door slams accidentaly it could cause the loosening of the lock.
We would also like to remind you that our hotel offers 2 solutions for parking the car: one in the public space, and the other in our garage (connected to the reception from a covered underground tunnel) like we proposed you at the ckeck in.
Regarding the quality of breakfast, we can assure you that all our products are fresh, we don't use any kind of powdered drink, we follow a standard that offers a variety of international products that everyone can enjoy.
As you pointed out, during the summer our swimming pool closes at 19.30, in order to give the possibility to our guests of having dinner on our beautiful terrace near the swiimming pool and enjoying the amazing view on the tuscan hills without disturbing the surrounding quiet.
Our aim is always offering the total relax and comfort to all our guests who choose Una Palazzo Mannaioni.

Hoping to have you again as our guest, we send you our best regards.

Stayed two nights when attending a wedding nearby. The staff were really helpful (Massimo and Maitre'd stood out), the restaurant excellent and everything v clean. The town and surroundings are spellbinding in their simplicity.

Room Tip: New part of hotel was excellent (can't speak for old part) and useful to have secure parking (co...

We have fallen in love with Montaione and its region - beautiful!!! We have had a great stay at the hotel that is small enough to have a really friendly ambiance. The hotel is charming and for once the pool is actually bigger in real life than on the photos. We stayed in one of the traditional rooms that was very spacious and although not very modern was clean and perfect. Try to get a room with a view over the Tuscany hills if possible. The service was great throughout the whole hotel : reception, handymen, restaurant, cleaners. The hotel is situated in the village of Montaione itself and so nice to go for a walk. It is a 5 min walk to a small supermarket which is handy. Very well situated to visit other sites and much cooler than Florence. If I had one suggestion to make it is maybe about the quality of the food served in the restaurant as although nice I felt that it could have been better and it seemed a shame that in the peak season that the beautiful garden dining area was not full. Had a fabulous stay in any case and would recommend the place, especially for couples.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view over the Tuscany countryside.

We have stayed many times at the Mannaioni and have always loved the place. Whether we have been as a family or as a couple we have always enjoyed the Hotel and Montaione itself. All of the staff are great and always remember us from previous visits. On this occasion, we had rooms in both the old part and the new part. Both rooms were nice and we were given a free upgrade to a Jr Suite in the new part. Breakfast was included and you are able to choose from fresh fruit, fresh juice, scrambled eggs, bacon, pastries, make your own toast, muesli, and yogurt.

The pool is one of the best features of the Hotel. Located in the garden at the back of the Hotel it is a beautiful suntrap all day.

We had trips to San Gimignano, Lucca and Florence, but the Hotel is well located for Sienna and the Chianti trail south of Florence.

Room Tip: Room 118 is a Junior Suite and very nice.
