“Need a GPS”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

We recently spent 2 weeks in Italy and booked one night at the Una Palazzo Mannaioni. We rented a car from Hertz and they didn't have a GPS available so we had no choice but to find this hotel the old fashioned way, by map. To our surprise though the town of Montaione isn't on any Italian maps! We literally bought 5 different maps and it wasn't on any of them. We even stopped at a rest area in the Chianti region and nobody had ever heard of the town. So we spent 2 hours in the car going through every town until we finally saw a sign for Montaione. It should have only taken us 45 minutes to get there from Florence. This isn't technically the hotel's fault but Montaione really should be on a map, even though it is very small. So after a very frustrating car ride we found the town but then we couldn't find the hotel entrance because there is no driveway to their front door, you have to park down the street and walk. So after circling through the town 5 times we parked and went to check in and were lucky enough to get 2 of the newly renovated rooms (I requested these in advance). They are across the street and there's an underground tunnel to get there, and also parking in the same building. We also found out that their famous restaurant was closed for the night. It was Wednesday! We were really looking forward to dining there so we were disappointed. And after driving through town we realized that Montaione was a ghost town and only one small sandwich shop was open, but luckily we had a car so we could drive somewhere for dinner. I understand that hotel restaurants need to close sometimes but when there is nowhere else to go that is walking distance they should find a way to stay open 7 days a week. We felt like we were the only ones staying at the hotel which was kind of nice, only ran into 2 other couples the whole time we were there. The rooms were nice, very clean and updated, but almost too high-tech for such an old town. It was difficult to figure out how to turn things on and it took us a long time to figure out how to work the TV. The room had a nice balcony though but since the rooms are so close together we couldn't hang out there for very long because the other 2 couples staying in the hotel complained that we were noisy.

We drove around Tuscany after we checked in and the front desk agent recommended Villa Pillo for wine tastings. It was only a 10 minute drive from the hotel and we really liked their wine. We had a bunch shipped home. We also drove through San Gimignano (amazing) which was only 30 minutes from the hotel and had dinner near there at Ristorante Casalchino. They had a breathtaking driveway and dinner was very good.

Overall the Una Palazzo Mannioni is cute, clean, and the service is OK, but I'm not sure I would stay there again. I would prefer to stay in a town that has a little more going on and is easier to find.

My husband and I just returned from a one month Italian touring vacation and this was by far the best hotel we stayed at. It is in the heart of the Chianti region, less than an hour from Florence and centrally located about 12 kilometers from San Gimignano. This hotel is an old palace in the charming town of Montaione and is definitely a must-visit destination for all tourists.

Service:
The staff at the front desk, bar and restaurants were very polite and knowledgeable. They were well acquainted with the region and made recommendations on sites and restaurants in the area worth visiting. We also saw lots of cleaning staff around the hotel, making sure that everything was well maintained and nicely groomed.

Room:
We stayed in a Suite that had a nice balcony with a great view. The room was very spacious, clean and had a very comfortable bed! We experienced no issues with air conditioning. Our room was nice and cool which is essential in the August heat. We stayed in the new building in a very modern room with a spacious bathroom that was large and well maintained. We were very happy with our room!

Grounds:
This hotel is situated in the picturesque foothills of Tuscany and has a large pool on site, surrounded by pretty gardens.

Food:
The hotel has a large bar and restaurant available to guests. The breakfast area was well arranged and spacious with lots of tables for guests. We took advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast which offered a large selection of food and beverages, including assorted coffees, juices, cereals, fruits, cheeses, yogurts and "american-style" bacon and eggs. You'd be hard pressed to not be satisfied with the selection.

Every single staff member we came in contact with was extremely helpful and polite and seemed genuinely concerned about making our stay enjoyable. Overall, the service and food were great, the rooms are modern and comfortable and this hotel offers plenty of other amenities. Can't beat the location and spectacular views. We hope to visit this hotel again!

Room Tip: This hotel offers a wide range of rooms. If you're looking for a rustic room with a spectacular...

My husband and I wanted to stay in a tuscan town for a night during our vacation. The town of Montaione is in a great location as it's an easy drive from/to Pisa, Lucca, Florence, wineries etc. Well we were thrilled with the hilltop views and small tuscan town we were not as thrilled with the hotel. We were under the impression that we had booked a newly renovated, modern room but turns out we were in the old part of the hotel which was a disappointment to us (but to others they would love the old charm). Upon arrival we were informed that the room was only booked for one adult not two (this was a typical problem with their booking system so we were told) and it would cost an extra 30 euros - this took an already pricy room to something we were prepared to pay but had no choice to pay - because they commented on it being a common mistake I thought we would have been given some options - like different rooms, etc. If were were in the room we thought we had booked it could have been a little better. Because of our late arrival there were very few dinner options - we ate at the hotel. The service was great and menu was traditional tuscan fine dining. If you are looking for a romantic tuscan meal this would be it!

Room Tip: Best to specify whether you want a newly renovated room or a classic room in the original building...

The old part of the building is from 500 A.C. and the rooms in this part of the hotel has character (we did change our room to a suite with two bedrooms, because we needed a bigger room - the old building is perfect for a couple with romance in mind).

The air con is bad, the breakfast is limited and classical italian.

The pool is nice for kids, indoor parking and VERY good food in the restaurant.

We absolutely loved the little town of Montaione and enjoyed our stay at the hotel. We stayed in one of the new rooms. They were really beautiful. A pitty though that they don't seem to be able to keep it like this. Room was not clean in all areas and the garden not looked after.

Had a junior suite, after upgrading from on of their new rooms, which were furnished very modern. Air conditioning was pretty poor, but the rooms nice. The service was great and their restaurant I highly recommend. Even the staff in the restaurants were fantastic. Their recommendations for what to do in the region and where to eat were also spot on.

Recommended for a nice get away.

I don't believe they had a fitness centre?

We were very disappointed in our 3 night stay with a group at the UNA Montaione. It a beautiful, restored property with new amenities but we were let down by so many small things. The air conditioning never cooled off our room, we could never figure out the in-room safe, drains in shower overflowed into the room, ant infestations, the wifi didn't work. Little stuff. One of the couples in our group had to be moved three times in three days because of problems in the rooms. I get it that it is not America but the problem seems to be that there isn't enough money to fix the little things or maybe the management just isn't good. There is a lot to like....a nice pool which was great after a long day enjoying the little hill towns nearby, the food was pretty good and the waitstaff was attentive, the beds were comfortable but, frankly, the little thing just overshadowed the good.
