“Second visit- hope to make a third....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

I truly love this place. My regret is that 1 night is way too short. Love the relaxed feel.... apero's before dinner, spa time, pool area, and the clean fresh mountain air. The rooms look great - we were there several years ago and they still look very fresh. I was disappointed that the restaurant 1500 was closed on the Sat night we were there - later explained that this was a last minute change by mgt and does not happen often. One suggestion for improvement - add a 'waiting lounge' to the spa. There is not a good place to wait for your treatments, which seemed like a missed opportunity. Don't miss the great Trehs products - you can buy and take some home to relive the pine scented lotions and shampoos.

Dear American_in_Italy,

thank you very much for your positive review. We are happy to hear that you appreciated our spa area so much. I am very sorry that you had to wait for your treatment without a suitable waiting area. Unfortunately in that time some waiting times occured, which is quite extraordinary.
Of course I can understand your worries that our Stube Ida had just been closed on that evening. As already mentioned this was a short-dated decision.
All the more we kindly notice your opinion about our rooms and their facilities.
Yes, you are absolutely right, one night is quite short for a visit in vigilius mountain resort.
We are looking forward to welcoming you back and hope your next stay will be longer!

Yours sincerely

Great place to recover quickly from hectic city life. Vigilius Mountain Resort is a James Bond like hideaway on 1500m above sea level in magic place in the Italian alps that can only be reached via cable car (that alone is a great adventure). We truly enjoyed the alpine inspired, El Bulli styled food (the chef is ex El Bulli). Extraordinary fresh air, truly fresh water from source and excellent service. Extremely clean rooms (hardly ever seen such clean hotel rooms).

Room Tip: Bring some hiking shoes and explore the surroundings.

Stayed for 9 nights and our room was on the ground floor with a patio/garden with mountain views. We thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing stay and couldn't have asked for a better location. High up at 1500 m in the mountains with the only access to the hotel by cable car, the seclusion of the hotel meant that it was private and exclusive enough to forget about the daily hassles and get on concentrating in achieving inner peace and relaxation. The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful - even arranged for a driver for us to make a day trip to Marmolada (the queen of the Dolomites), about 3 hours away from Lana. All the walking treks are within easy access of the hotel. The only complaint we had was to get to the hotel, we were told to take the train from Bolzano (as we were arriving from Verona) to Postal and then a bus to Lana. The train from Bolzano to Postal doesn't run anymore. Thus the best alternative was to take the train from Bolzano to Merano and then a taxi to Vigiljoch cable car station or a bus to the Lana Busbanhof and walk (5 mins) to the cable car station. Free Wi-Fi is now available throughout the hotel though the no TV concept in the room still applies. You can always request for one to be installed though. We would stay here again should we be in that part of Italy again in the future. It was money worth spending.

We stayed in a standard room for three nights and the hotel is a very good place to relax and enjoy yourself. The room itself is rather small with queensize beds which was less than we expected. But this was our only complaint. The design of the building is awesome, the staff is friendly and the spa area is quite big and was at least during the day not too crowded. The best part of the hotel is for sure the restaurant "1500" that serves extraordinary food. We also got lucky to be served by Angelo, in our opinion the best waiter of the hotel. The location is perfect if you are looking for a relaxing holiday as the hotel can only be reached by cable car and the area does not seem to be flooded by day tourists. The hiking and skiing area starts in front of the hotel and provides enough to see for a day or two.

Dear Carsten80,
thank you very much for your positive review. We are sorry that our offered bed did not fulfill your expectations. But independent of the room category all our rooms are provided with Kingsize beds. Please be sure that your compliments have already been forwarded to our colleagues, especially to Angelo. It is great to read that our Restaurant "1500" was regarded as the best place in the vigilius mountain resort by you. We are happy that you enjoyed the surroundings so much and we are looking forward to welcome you again soon!

although we have spent already several winter holidays at this resort, at a height of 1500 m in splendid isolation on the Vigiljoch mountain and amidst beautiful views on the dolomites, the fact that this is the "only" resort we return to time after time, means it's certainly worthwhile for critical guys like us. Eager to go for the newest resorts and hotels worldwide, this hotels keeps catering us in the best possible and warm way.

The modern architecture by Matteo Thun remains timeless in its beauty. The staff is excellent (watch out for Georges, he is a true top maitre d'hotel and very professional, and Andy, probably the most sympathetic sports manager on earth ... ). The culinary level is reasonable with a basic offer in the stube Ida and a higher level in the 1500 restaurant (although sometimes a little bit to far fetched and not always up to the level of the credentials of the chef).

the rooms remain beautiful in their modern, minimal simplicity.

Worth recommending for the discerning traveler.

Skiing close to the resort is on slopes that are not very challenging but somewhat further down the valley there is Val d'ultimo. Compact and challenging with modern ski accommodation.

As a three star plus hotel it could be acceptable, but as a five star: a disaster.
My husband and I have travelled widely for more than 30 years and stayed in modest, as well as luxury hotels all over Europe, and especially in Italy, where we live.
Stating that "we have no wifi, as we would like our guest to relax comepletely" comes across as simply patronising, confusing bad service with good (who decides what is relaxing?).
The cable supplied instead did not work, reception staff adamantly maintaining it wasn't their fault.
The same reception staff was ignorant of even the names of common Italian newspapers, did not get us promised newspapers (The Guardian and Financial Times not available), and did not take Diners Credit Card although stated in brochures and on website.
The special 3-days weekend offer stated in the information folder in the room gave a price of 883.- Euro, which meant we payed between 400 and 500 Euros for one extra night...
Waitress in the 'Stube' restaurant argued (in the literal sense of the word) that it didn't matter if white wines and rosé wines were older, and in the breakfast room the head waiter - when his attention was drawn to the pitiful morsels of cheese displayed - made it clear I was being unreasonable and asked: "And what cheese would you like then?".
We also overheard a young couple being turned out of the 'Stube' restaurant one evening, when they asked for a table without having reserved. "No, we have reached our limit, I'm sorry!" (showing no sign of this by the way). There were still empty, non reserved tables, and the couple were guests in the hotel, with nowhere else to go for a meal after 7.30 pm, as the cable car stops working at that hour.
Why the toilet was a tiny cubicle with neither hand wash facility, nor bidet, beats me.
Nostalgia for old farm loos perhaps?
And to top it all: I returned with athletes foot, most probably due to rushed and inefficient cleaning of the room's shower cubicle, the floor presenting cracked tiles with black mould.

Dear Mrs Brigitte H,
Thank you for your time to explain your thoughts about your stay at the vigilius mountain resort, I have read with interest the details of your experience.
I can agree with you that we are not a typical five star hotel, however what makes the vigilius mountain resort different and chosen by many guests, are its peculiarities.
Our philosophy is perhaps unusual, we do not have, as a typical 5 star hotel the TV in the room, however we are glad to set it up on request, while internet has a cable connection in each room. We do not have Wi-Fi and we apologise if we have come across patronising in the way we have said it, however we thought it is a nice way to explain that we are totally deep in nature with no many daily life distractions.
We do apologise for the incorrect method of payment advertised on the portal, via which you booked your room, it has been corrected now, while our website and all the other portals do not show the Diners as an accepted method of payment.
We have a few different types of packages with a minimum length of stay of three nights up to the “week package” for seven nights. The packages are special rates that offer a reduce price, all the additional nights during a very demanded period have no discount and the rates are published on the internet.
We have a professional team that can make mistakes on the job, however we have never had any problem in regards to our colleagues’ behaviour. We do not argue with guests and neither we come across rude, what we can apologise for, is that sometimes we require a bit of understanding perhaps due to the language barrier.
We have two restaurants and both together are enough to host all our guests, when the house is fully booked, however the guests need to be split between the two. We kindly inform our guests on arrival that we have the two restaurants and to make a reservation especially, when the hotel is very busy, we are not able to sit too many people in our Parlour Ida and we regret to turn down our guests for dinner, but more than 30 people cannot be seated at the same time in it. The Restaurant 1500 is the other solution.
There are plenty of possibilities to have a nice dinner in the valley at Lana and the other villages in the area and later to come back to the hotel by 11pm. Our guests are well informed about the cable car time schedule, on the pouch with the tickets – that is given on arrival by the cable car station in the valley, it is written on the board on reception and if our guests have any doubts, we are here all day for them to help.
Last but not least, please note that we are very proud to have a spotless environment (rooms, restaurants, toilets and everything else), we have never ever had problems of this kind and all the certificates that we have, with the highest evaluations, prove that.
We are certainly sorry to hear that some misunderstandings have spoilt your stay at the vigilius mountain resort, however we are proud to be an unusual place where to spend some relaxing time.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Cristina Boggio
