Having eaten at many great soul food establishments both near and far, Family Secrets, definitely is at the top of the list. Located in a strip mall of Chamberlayne, you'd miss this spot if you're not a local or no someone who is. Upon entry, the wall is covered with pictorial mementos of the owner and staff with celebrities. Seating is arranged with booths along both walls, and 4-top tables are located in the middle of the floor. Towards the back of the restaurant is the bar, and the kitchen. The night we visited the Presidential Debate was a hot topic of discussion. To give you a feel of the restaurant, this issue was discussed, and debated openly, with everyones opinion being considered. The owner frequently made his rounds to the guest all night, which is unheard in most places. We started off with the homemade sweet tea which is perfectly made. For dinner we ordered the chicken wing and fish (whiting) platter. Let me start by saying that over-seasoning does not mean good when in comes to soul food. The chicken wings, which were huge, and three pieces of fish were WELL seasoned, not over-seasoned as is the case in most places. Usually you get sufficient side dishes and small pieces of meat, but here you get large enough portions to warrant a take out bag. The cabbage (julienne strips) was cooked just right, somewhere between soft and having a slight bite, which I like, macaroni and cheese (light, but very cheesy, very creamy, with a touch of sour cream?), mixed greens (cooked with meat, didn't ask if it was pork or turkey, and it wouldn't have mattered), yams and rice, along with the cornbread (very moist, and light). The seasonings used brought out the natural flavors, and/or enhanced the foods without overpowering them (they have it right/use the right amount). The wait staff along with the owner were very attentive to all their customers during our visit. Family Secret's will be our first, and maybe only stop to eat while in Richmond (or until we get to try everything on the menu). The food is well cooked, the portions are large, the prices are just right, and the atmosphere is friendly!!! I would recommend this soul food restaurant to anyone traveling to Richmond, or traveling on I-95 or
I-64 as they are less than 3 blocks off I-95. I can't wait to get back!!!
As a note, they feature live music on certain nights.
