“Fascinating Cemetery, trolley guide only "OK"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

This cemetery is so full of history: Presidents' graves, and their families; Confederate leaders and their families, and so many others. Because of the extent of the cemetery (it now exceeds 140 acres) and all the interesting information, it is advisable to take a guided tour. Because of the heat and the fact that we'd already walked all over the city of Richmond (and its many hills!) for the previous 3 days, & were on our "last legs," we chose the trolley tour. That was a lifesaver for us, however, the guide was difficult to understand, and her knowledge was sometimes spotty. There was also another guide offering 2-hour walking tours, which might have been better to take, had we been up to the lengthy walk, however, I can't imagine us being able to cover all the areas that we did on the trolley. We loved the historical aspect of this very unique place, and recommend the Hollywood Cemetery, just bring comfortable shoes, lots of energy, and drinking water. PS: Lots of hills, walking, etc so I don't recco. walkers, wheelchairs, or strollers.

What a great way to spend some great time with the family! The James River in the background and the lush green scenery is a treat. Free, fun and informative!,

“Cementery that is Full of History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

I went for the 10 am tour of Hollywood cemetery and our guide was very knowledgeable. Anyone who wants to join this tour need to prepare themselves for a long walk. This is one of a kind cemetery that is full of history. It is the resting place of 3 presidents namely Tyler, Monroe and Jefferson Davis. What is very interesting is the different monuments that has different forms, angels, dog ( for there is only one dog in the entire cemetery), the different symbols, vines, grapes, star of David, etc. It is very interesting to learn the different symbols and their meanings. Why a certain family has all the same monument symbols except for one family member (Lloyd Family) It is very interesting and worth visiting.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

You don't normally think of a cemetery as a tourist attraction, but this one is not only lovely, it's historic. There are places that overlook the river that are so scenic that you forget you are in a cemetery. Many of the people who rest here are played huge parts in not only Richmond history, but the history of the country (two presidents and six governors are here among others). For those who are interested, they have daily walking tours. I think they also have ghost tours around Halloween. (I hear it's haunted). My favorite monument is the 90 foot pyramid erected to the Confederate soldiers.

“I'm glad we stopped!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

We decided to stop because this place sounded interesting. We stopped in the office and picked up a map of the cemetery and decided to drive around on our own. I was quite surprised at how beautiful it was. The cemetery is along the river which added lovely scenery. Driving around the confederate area led you to a large pyramid commemorating the confederate soldiers. Following the blue line which was the confederate route led you to the final resting places of Jefferson Davis, John Tyler and James Monroe. We also saw the site marking the first grave of a confederate soldier. There are walking tours available.
