I recently stayed at a Marriot Residence Inn for a job, and was very comfortable there for my 6 week stay. My company booked me at this Candlewood for a 13 week job in Richmond; the first hour I was here I emailed them and let them know they were going to have to come up with a new place.
First, the location; it's about 200 yards from the headquarters of the Phillip Morris Company. There's a big 200 ft high cigarette sitting out in front of it. It's all industrial around here, with a small clump of hotels at right off the interstate. There is a Subway across the street, and a sports grille in the Holiday Inn next door; the Subway is much better. Within a couple mile radius, there are a few fast food restaurants and a couple of local dives to eat at. I've been driving 15 mins to eat every time.
As far as the place itself; while reasonably clean, it's got a tired, under maintained feel to it. The videotapes behind the counter that you could check out were the first clue; seriously, they have VCR's in the room? Yup (actually, a VCR/DVD combo, but seriously, who uses VCR's anymore?). The room itself is NOT fit for extended stay; it's a motel room with a fridge and a very small kitchenette up against the wall when you walk in. I've stayed at a Red Roof Inn recently in a bigger room than this one. No table, just one desk with a chair that is too short for the desk. An old 25" TV bolted to the dresser that I have to stick my finger into a hole to turn it on and off. There is about a 4' open area before you get to the bed. Nothing special about the bed, though lately most budget hotels are equipped with better beds. One bedside table, and one easy chair stuffed between the bedside table and the wall. The bathroom is of a decent size, with cheap cabinets and very little water pressure in the shower if you want to use any hot water. The shower fittings jiggle around very easy, I can move the entire setup around about 6" in any direction. There is one closet, it's pretty large, if basic.
I think they do room cleaning 2 days a week; I've been here since Sat, it's Tues now and they haven't come to clean or empty trash yet. I had about 1/4 roll of toilet paper on check in, and one single paper towel sheet (sorta... you know that last sheet that is glued to the roll? That's the one that was here).
The room is small, and it feels small; I went nuts living in a larger place in Vegas for 6 weeks, and I was working 4 nights a week and on the strip for a couple more while I was there. The Marriot I stayed in recently was spacious, with great service, and I could have stayed there 6 months or more; anything more than a week will be too long for me here.
This place would be good for a few days, if you needed the kitchenette. Otherwise, if you need to stay in this area, you would be better off at the Holiday Inn next door, the Hampton Inn across the street, or even the Red Roof in beside it.
