As a Civil War buff I was beside myself in Richmond as I had so many sites to visit. The good surprise was coming across the Iron Works on the Canal walk !
Did I mention it was free !! I've been critical of the NPS before because sometimes they act as though the exhibit is theirs and how dare we want to look or touch.
This place is brilliant, with different levels of exhibits , hands on displays (do the cannon loading/firing,it's a hoot) and all built into the original site of the Works.
There are interactive displays and on the day we visited lots of school kids enjoying the grounds. My history classes wern't like that !! Also it is Free !
The visual/audio display is eerie and gives a great feeling for the time, well worth the time to visit. The Ranger (I think it was Smith ??) was very helpful and supplied us with directions and maps for our next stop at Petersburg and was a real help ! Highly recommended !! Don't go next door because it ain't Free !!!
