With Priceline, when you nab a nice name brand hotel for a good price, you are usually assured of a real bargain. This stay shows that sometimes it just ain't so. To start with, there is no self parking, and valet is a pricy option, especially for Richmond. Luckily it was a holiday weekend so we could ignore the downtown parking rules.
The room was 63f when we walked in. I couldn't tell you why it was so cold, there is no reason in the world for them to have made it so. The way the room is designed, there is no light switch near the door. You walk in, hoping you can find the switch, which is just far enough inside the room that you can't hold the door open-so you can SEE-and find the switch. Nope, the door closes, leaving you in a darkened tomb. Next, there was no light in our bathroom. Tried resetting the GFCI, but it wouldn't budge. The entire unit looked pushed into the wall. The lock bar on the door was only half a lock bar. The part on the jamb had vanished, leaving only screw holes. There was no plug for the tub, nor any other mechanism to plug the drain so you could USE it as a TUB. Perhaps most egregiously bad, there was no book to let you know what the hotel had as far as services, pool etc. (Note: though I called in the first hour of us being there, this NEVER showed up in the room in the 3 days we were there, despite them telling me one would be "right up").
We decided to set the thermostat to heat for a few minutes as it was far too cold to actually stay IN the room, so we went exploring. We went to the top floor of the hotel for the spectacularly located pool. You can see the whole city from there. Too bad its decor consists of broken ashtrays and nothing else. But I digress; to get to the pool you need an access code. There is a convenient phone nearby, we presumed to call the desk. But it had no dial tone. So we went back downstairs, all the way down, 16 floors. BTW, the elevators are located more or less IN the bar. This being Virginia, smoking is encouraged, and so the 80% of us who don't smoke have no choice but to walk through that reek. Great design! (Doubtless it was the work of that local legend, The RJ Reynolds school of hotel design.) The staff did fix the light, but in 3 days the door locking bar was never replaced. Even upstairs the mess continued, outside of our room near the elevator lobby on the 5th floor there was a small table with a light and a telephone on it. Every time we went to or from our room it also had either a dirty plate or a used napkin etc sitting on it. Every time. For 3 solid days and nights.
Doubletree, if you are listening, please understand I'm not a part timer, I travel over 100 nights a year, am a gold level frequent flyer and know what nice places you guys usually have. But not this one. I have NEVER given a review this bad, and hate doing so now. But this place, this team, and this manager are doing a totally unacceptable job.
