“if you expect hospitality, DON"T STAY HERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2007

I have never been motivated to write a review before, but the service at this hotel was so ridiculously bad that I feel compelled to do so. Tried a couple times over the weekend to order room service. The call was only answered once and we were told that they were understaffed and not serving breakfast. The bartender was so rude that we walked to a neighboring hotel to have a drink. One evening I stood outside 20 minutes waiting for valet to bring around my car. when he finally came up the carport in front of the lobby was so backed up with people dropping off there cars that I had to run across the street to get mine. The front desk help was snide and sarcastic. we had a member of our party that would be checking in late at night, so we spoke to the front desk and manager to make sure there wouldn't be any problems for him to check in under our name as we would be asleep by the time he arrived. he arrives and guess what...no key, no room. so we were awakened to sort out the problem, which was exactly what we had taken measures to avoid. I was stunned by how poorly we were treated at this hotel. Take my advice and stay anywhere else but here.

Check-in was a easy. The staff was professional and polite. The only complaints were the availability of ice machines and using the stairs to get to the lobby. Otherwise clean room. Bed and bedding was excellent. Nice thick towels. I will return.
Thank you

We liked that hotel. We got a good deal on the room rate, it was worth the trip already.
This hotel is not totally done with the renovation, so there are still some details needed to work on. I would not want to pay the full rack rate at this moment.
Since it's a weekend, we parked the car off the street, there was not a problem.
The front desk at check -in was professional and friendly, so did the other employees at hotel.
The hotel was about 15 minutes of walking distance to some main attractions, but it was nice to see that part of town along the way.
Richmond has few very interesting neighborhoods, it's a good place for a weekend trip.
Over all we enjoyed our stay.

We booked to hotel before reading the review and weren't sure what to expect. Everyone has been pretty harsh about it but we found it to be great!! Our room was clean and well kept. We only stayed one night and are from the Richmond area, so the lack of parking was nothing new. If you can park in Richmond, you can park anywhere... The front desk staff was not the most friendly but we were so tired it did not matter too much to us. With Hotwire we got an excellent deal so we enjoyed the night. I;d still say its worth a try if you can't afford the Jefferson, Berkley or Omni.

We booked at the last minute, and chose the Doubletree because they allow pets with a $25 fee, compared to the Omni ($50) or Jefferson Hotel ($40.) I read the reviews on here afterward, and cannot believe I stayed at the same hotel.
Our room on the 15th floor was large, with a medium-sized fridge and microwave, and the bed was so comfortable. Everything was very clean and there was free Internet as well.
We asked the front desk to suggest an inexpensive hamburger place and they were very helpful. We loved the later check-out (noon) and the quiet room.
The only down note was the Sunday breakfast and the $14 parking fee, which seemed quite high. The buffet mentioned in the hotel's book was non-existent and the only place you could order was the bar area. Our simple eggs were very greasy and it was possibly the worst coffee I've ever had - l swear the in-room coffee was better.
But on the whole, we'd happily stay here again - we'd just go out for breakfast.

With Priceline, when you nab a nice name brand hotel for a good price, you are usually assured of a real bargain. This stay shows that sometimes it just ain't so. To start with, there is no self parking, and valet is a pricy option, especially for Richmond. Luckily it was a holiday weekend so we could ignore the downtown parking rules.

The room was 63f when we walked in. I couldn't tell you why it was so cold, there is no reason in the world for them to have made it so. The way the room is designed, there is no light switch near the door. You walk in, hoping you can find the switch, which is just far enough inside the room that you can't hold the door open-so you can SEE-and find the switch. Nope, the door closes, leaving you in a darkened tomb. Next, there was no light in our bathroom. Tried resetting the GFCI, but it wouldn't budge. The entire unit looked pushed into the wall. The lock bar on the door was only half a lock bar. The part on the jamb had vanished, leaving only screw holes. There was no plug for the tub, nor any other mechanism to plug the drain so you could USE it as a TUB. Perhaps most egregiously bad, there was no book to let you know what the hotel had as far as services, pool etc. (Note: though I called in the first hour of us being there, this NEVER showed up in the room in the 3 days we were there, despite them telling me one would be "right up").

We decided to set the thermostat to heat for a few minutes as it was far too cold to actually stay IN the room, so we went exploring. We went to the top floor of the hotel for the spectacularly located pool. You can see the whole city from there. Too bad its decor consists of broken ashtrays and nothing else. But I digress; to get to the pool you need an access code. There is a convenient phone nearby, we presumed to call the desk. But it had no dial tone. So we went back downstairs, all the way down, 16 floors. BTW, the elevators are located more or less IN the bar. This being Virginia, smoking is encouraged, and so the 80% of us who don't smoke have no choice but to walk through that reek. Great design! (Doubtless it was the work of that local legend, The RJ Reynolds school of hotel design.) The staff did fix the light, but in 3 days the door locking bar was never replaced. Even upstairs the mess continued, outside of our room near the elevator lobby on the 5th floor there was a small table with a light and a telephone on it. Every time we went to or from our room it also had either a dirty plate or a used napkin etc sitting on it. Every time. For 3 solid days and nights.

Doubletree, if you are listening, please understand I'm not a part timer, I travel over 100 nights a year, am a gold level frequent flyer and know what nice places you guys usually have. But not this one. I have NEVER given a review this bad, and hate doing so now. But this place, this team, and this manager are doing a totally unacceptable job.

  • Liked — The pools rooftop location made for a gorgeous view.
  • Disliked — We have a tie between lack of maintenance and lack of cleanliness in the public areas.
