I've been to Mezzanine several times over the years but after a 2 year hiatus I returned last night, which ended being a giant disappointment. The quality and quantity of food has definitely dropped over the years. The service was excellent, and both the waitress and host were friendly, prompt and never ignored the table. So I have no issues with restaurant personnel. My issues are with the food itself. By the end of the night, we amassed a bill of $80 for two people, including taxes/tip. For a 'nice night out' type of place, we ended up leaving hungry and disappointed. Allow me to walk you through each course:
Beverages: My fiancé ordered an $8 glass of wine. I have no gripe with the price, but when you order an $8 glass of low-end Pinot Noir, the restaurant should at least provide a solid glass full. False! What she received was a glass that was probably only 4oz full. Now I understand that a "proper" glass of wine is 5 or 6oz, but hers was no way near that for $8 and is really just infuriating. Seriously, that’s $2 an oz. Awesome.
I ordered a Legend Brown Ale, no complaints there as I received a full pint glass for a 'steal' at $5.
Appetizer: We ordered the Oysters Dynamite, which were advertised as baked oysters in a siracha aioli sauce for $12. What we received was a dish containing 4 small/medium size oysters, that were barely baked and tasted like they had a 'zesty' Thousand Island Dressing doused on top. 4 crappy oysters, $12. Seriously? I understand its supposed to be an upscale place in Carytown, but at least give us 6 oysters and make us feel like we're getting a decent deal. $3 per crap oyster? Give me a break!!!!!!!
Entrees: I ordered a 'small plate' which was the Lobster Tacos. An odd dish, but was actually very tasty. Was it worth $14 for two medium sized tacos? Probably not, but understanding the price of lobster, and the small plate fancy trend, I wasn't too upset about it as I was pleased with the taste of the dish. My Fiancé ordered the Braised Short Ribs. A dish she had ordered multiple times over the years, and lusted for since our last trip. However, on this occassion, for a dish that's $23, it was a massive disappointment. It was served over brown rice, which was way undercooked. The term 'al dente' is typically used for pasta, not rice, and this was definitely one stage shy of that! Additionally, serving bland, unseasoned rice for the base of this dish is an insult to the savory sauce the short ribs are simmered in. Given the sauce is bursting with flavor and a tad sweet, you need something to offset it. Rice, which takes on the flavor of the foods around it, isn't the answer. What about the vegetable, you ask? Well they're serving it with Kale -- a lettuce type of veggie, that doesn’t really add much pizzazz to anything. So for $23, you're basically getting an order of beef, which was overbearing in flavor giving the lack of taste on the surrounding dish, and two of the world's cheapest side options. Last time she ordered this dish it was served with grits, which added a lot more flavor and texture to the dish. Additionally the creamy gritty goodness, helped offset the overbearing sweetness of the short ribs. But this time she could only get half way through it, b/c the sweet robust flavor was just overbearing.
Total Bill for 1 app, 1 small plate, 1 large plate, & 2 alcoholic beverages= $68 after tax ($80 after tip). For that price, I should at least be satisfied with what's put in front of me and not left feeling like I could put together a better dish. Clearly Mezzanine is going for a 'nice night out' type of place given the amount of money they charge, and the way they present their food. But considering I've left more satisfied after a $25 check at a lowly Cracker Barrel, I don't think I'll ever be back here.
