“Big let down.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013 via mobile

After looking at photos and reading the reviews of the Linden Row Inn, I was very excited for my
visit. However, upon arriving, our room was nothing like the photos on the website. It was run down and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. It was way overpriced for the quality of the room. We did like the shuttle service, and the staff was friendly.

The Linden Row Inn is made up of a group of historic row houses, as well as some additional detached buildings. I stayed on the third floor (I believe room 323) of the main house.

The room I stayed in was huge with a queen size bed, writing desk and armchair for furniture. The bathroom was small but clean. The layout was a little awkward with no towel rack near the sink and not a lot of space to layout necessities.

The bed was amazingly comfortable with many pillows and a fluffy duvet. A drawback though is that the (only) window in the room looks out directly onto the outside corridor and two rocking chairs were placed right outside the window. If this were an outdoor area for the room itself that would be a nice extra, but there is no access from the room directly to the corridor and so those chairs are for the use of anyone walking down the corridor. In my case two people decided that this was an excellent place to sit and smoke and chat (LOUDLY) at 6:45am on a Sunday morning, despite my knock on the window and request to lower the volume, making it impossible to sleep. (These charming people also returned about 45 minutes later for a repeat performance).

The service was excellent, I had no problem checking in or out and everyone I encountered at the front desk were all friendly and helpful. The Inn also offers a shuttle service to various restaurants/location in Richmond which is fantastic. I asked if they would drop me at a restaurant in Oregon Hill (which wasn't listed as one of the places on the shuttle service) and they were happy to do it.

Overall I think the rooms are beautiful and comfortable and the service was excellent, but the unique layout of having guestrooms with windows directly overlooking public areas can definitely be problematic if you aren't a heavy sleeper.

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed review of the Linden Row Inn.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our historic property, and sincerely apologize for the noise from the guests sitting on the deck near your room on Sunday morning. We do offer Main House rooms facing the street, and would encourage future guests who may not be comfortable with a room facing our deck to request a street-facing room. Provided that we have availability, we always make a best effort to accommodate such special requests.

We appreciate your review and hope to host you again soon!

What do you get when you link a group of historic row houses? The Linden Row Inn in downtown Richmond. A wonderful re-purposing that provides large, nicely maintained rooms in a unique, rambling setting in the midst of the city. Great price, wonderful staff, passes to nearby Y.

Keep in mind, this is a historic building, so you'll get the charm of the period in which is was built. That said, the spaces, public and private are wonderful, and the staff is amazing. Very friendly, helpful, prompt and on it! Plus the location of the hotel is right in the middle of so many downtown RIC locations, and the shuttle service (though we didn't use it - we used the in/out valet service) make it EASY to get where you want to go quickly. Even though we have family in the area, we will DEFINITELY be staying in this place again. Love it!

Room Tip: We were in a Garden Room, which I was just a little worried about, but it was great to walk to it vi...

We were upgraded to a parlor suite, which was large and beautiful with period furnishings.
Complimentary breakfast was similar to other hotels.
Internet was complimentary but on the slow side.
Front staff were helpful and kind.
I did like the fact that they had a shuttle to run around the downtown, especially when it rains.
The immediate area is not the nicest area in Richmond, but it is only a few blocks from the Convention Center, and the shuttle is very nice.
Also, the wood floors were nice in the rooms, but we did have some people stay above us which were very noisy. The floors amplified the noise.
Overall, we enjoyed are stay. It was one of the most unique rooms we have ever stayed in. The staff was very kind including the driver. I would stay here again any time.

When we were going to Richmond for a wedding, the Linden Row Inn came up as a possible place to stay. Reviews on Trip Advisor were all over the place, from one star to five, but it looked convenient to where wedding events were taking place, so we opted to stay because of its character and location. This was a very wise choice. No, it’s not your latest, most up-to-date hotel, but it is on the National Historic Register, so one has to keep that in mind. If you want new, then stay new!! The hotel was convenient to everything. Within walking distance of the Jefferson, a good walk to the Capitol area, and the shuttle will take you most anywhere you want to go up until 10 at night. The driver took us to Carytown, restaurants, the Capitol area, the Historic Society, Maymont, and more. We parked the car and did not touch it until we left for home. So much easier to use the shuttle than to navigate Richmond’s one way streets and parking issues. The drivers, Duncan and Frank were just great when it came to taking us places and bringing us home. The gals at the front desk could not have been nicer! The hotel is a maze of halls, balconies, out buildings, etc. since these are row houses that were connected to create the hotel. Our room was fine. Two comfy beds and a newly renovated bathroom, a flat screen TV, and free Internet. We did not have any issue with stairs, because when reading previous reviews, we asked at the front desk to make sure we did not have stair issues. We took an elevator to the second floor, walked across the deck, and right into our rooms. So ask ahead of time when you book to make sure you have no stairs if that is your option. The hotel is quaint with a parlor instead of a lobby…complete with some period furniture and the public computer station. Be sure to find the book that tells the history of the hotel and its connection to Lady Astor and Edgar Allan Poe, Allan coming from the last name of one of the owners when he was a foster child of theirs. Breakfast is your standard hotel continental breakfast with fruit, hot cereals including real oatmeal, little pastries and breads, and juice, coffee, tea, and cold cereals. The breakfast room is in an older section with the painted brick walls of the lower level and it is also adjacent to the outdoor garden. We were quite happy with our stay. Other folks who were going to the wedding stayed there too and everyone was happy with their choice of hotel. No real restaurant in hotel and not a lot of nearby restaurants, but the shuttle made it easy to get to food!

My husband & I cannot get enough of the Linden Row Inn in downtown Richmond. It is wonderful for quick long-weekend getaways, any time of the year. The rooms are typical of those in historic row houses, which is what Linden Row is. One can just picture Edgar Allan Poe as a young boy wandering around the place.

Linden Row is walking distance to some fine restaurants. We love Bistro 27, just three short blocks from the inn. If the weather is inclement, Linden Row provides a courtesy van to deliver you to a destination and to pick you up when you are ready to return. The historic Jefferson Hotel is two blocks away, so you can explore the majestic lobby of that Grand Hotel.

We highly recommend Linden Row. 20 years, and returning as often as possible.

Room Tip: Request a room with windows facing Franklin Street. Those are parlor suites and they have a charm t...
