“Nice but noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Very nice hotel. Clean and comfortable. One major downside is that the hotel is located across from a very boisterous bar. If your room is on the street side (front) of the hotel don't expect to get to sleep before 3:00am. The noise from the bar is easily heard in the room until 2:00am when the bar closes - then it gets really loud as all the patrons pour out into the street to continue the party for at least another hour. Best bet is to party with them and turn in late.

Room Tip: Get a room off the street to limit the noise from the bar packed street.

We needed a quick getaway for the weekend and this hotel was wonderful. Our room was spacious and comfortable, loved the tile in the bathroom. The staff was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed spending a little time in the bar listening to some live music. The only negative had to do with other guests who seemed to be having some sort of fight or very loud disagreement in the hallway in the middle of the night.

We took a last minute getaway for the holiday weekend and were impressed from the moment we walked in the door. The hotel is elegant and stately. We were upgraded immediately for no reason. The balcony suite was lovely comfortable and the linens were high end. Loved the selection of tv channels many more then most tvs. I loved the valet parking you pay for it but after all, we were on vacation. We felt welcomed and wanted in this hotel and we were attended to with charm and sincerity. I would only caution ask for an "away from Cary street" room if you are not used to city noise at night.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the noise of Cary st.

Great location, lots of restaurants within walking distance. Front desk evening manager was fantastic (think her name was Amanda). Valet man was not very friendly but you can't win them all. Our room was good size, lots of storage space, Bathroom well lite, lots of counter space. King room and the bed was very comfortable.

We like a cold room at night and the temparture gauge only went down to 70 so not that cool. Hotel has a restaurant but we did not eat at it but it looked nice. Starbucks 2 doors down so nice for coffee in the morning.

Thank you for mentioning our great staff and prime location in Shockoe Slip in Richmond’s Historic District. We spend a considerable amount to time training our staff to meet our guest's expectations. I am so sorry to hear that our bellmen on duty was not more outgoing. Please contact me directly at 804-225-5148 so that I can determine which bellman that was and continue to train to four diamond standards.

Beautiful historic, Great location downtown., Parking sucks but if you are able to afford the valet, get the valet and enjoy downtown on foot. Beautiful at night. Jazz on Saturday night at the hotel. Did not like the fact they don't have amenities on site i.e. indoor pool, gym....but you are able to go to the YMCA compliments of the hotel.

We shouldn't have been surprised because the hotel receives good
reviews on this site, but since we scored The Berkeley on a Priceline
bid, I wasn't sure how we would be treated. No need to worry. The
first thing our receptionist said is that they had upgraded us to a deluxe
king room. I know that part of the reason for the upgrade was the hotel
was not too busy on a Sunday night, but they didn't have to and we
appreciated the gesture.

Our room on the 5th floor (510) was spacious and tastefully decorated.
We had a sofa, 2 arm chairs, a desk and chair plus a chest of drawers
with a wide screen TV. The king size bed was very comfortable. One
very nice feature was two luggage racks and a good size safe.

The bathroom was huge with a single vanity and combination tub/shower.
The decor was very pleasant, albeit somewhat oudated with gold fixtures.
My only compaint about the bath would be it needed higher voltage
lights.

The dining room was very attractive and the night manager/head waiter
advised us there was a 20% discount for hotel guests. Since the menu
was quite ambitious pricewise, we opted to walk around the neighborhood
and find something cheaper. I'd love to come back on a weekday or
Saturday night since there were many nearby restaurants that were
closed on a Sunday night that looked interesting..

Valet parking at $21.00 was prompt and courteous, however we could
probably have done better at a garage about 4 blocks away. We were just
tired after a fairly long drive. We would not hesitate to return to The
Berkeley when in Richmond again.

Room Tip: Our room in the back of the hotel had a view of a brick wall, however the tradeoff was it was quiet...

I was pleased to see that you received an upgraded guestroom during your stay with us. We receive so many compliments about our oversized guestrooms, amenities and our great location. We remain Richmond’s only downtown 4 diamond hotel. In addition, our restaurant has won many awards and we hope that you will have a chance to come back and dine with with us soon.

I booked The Berkeley because it was very convenient to meeting up with a friend. I took advantage that I had a Saturday to Sunday stay and parked on the street overnight, which worked out perfectly. (Weekdays you would probably get stuck moving the car early.) The hotel is done in an older style that fit into the neighborhood. Nice big room, very nice big bathroom. The street had a lot of activity going on that night which gave it a nice vibe. My room's windows did not face the main street so I didn't hear any of the partying, but I was near the elevator and I could definitely hear the loud people by it in the AM. I also had an issue with their not having the correct rate set up properly in the computer, but the front desk person was very polite and got it fixed. But always travel with your payment paperwork. I don't know if it would have been such an easy fix without it.

We appreciate your comments about our large and comfortable guestrooms. We recently won “Best Boutique Hotel In Richmond” as a readers choice award in Virginia Living Magazine. Please accept our apology for not having the correct rate listed upon your arrival. I was pleased to see that this was handled promptly. We are looking forward to your return to The Berkeley.
