“Almost empty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

Stopped by for lunch on a weekday and the place was empty. The bartender was handling everything. Nice fella, but the food was mediocre at best. Looks like they may have a drinking scene going at night, but I don't think they will survive as a restaurant in a competitive town like RVA. Nothing original, no obvious theme to the menu. No reason to return. Just not a compelling experience.

“Reasonable wine list and great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

Must try for dinner. Everything was great and the wine prices were shockingly reasonable. For some reason opentable had them listed as booked when there was plenty of room do call the restaurant for reservations. The olives and almonds were really unique and the hanger steak was cooked perfectly. Staff was friendly too.

“Surpassed our Expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

We have dined at Lemaire, Julep, and The Boathouse, and our impression of Society surpassed our expectations.

We placed our order and there was no bread basket or fillers offered or needed. Very shortly afterward we were presented with the House Tater Tots with smoked paprika and Roasted Brussels Sprouts. The tots were enormous, crispy, and delicious and in a nice fryer basket presentation. The Brussels sprouts were roasted and tender with little pearl onions for balance.

The salads came next and were of the freshest organic ingredients. We shared the Tuscan Kale Salad with sweet white beans, roasted VA peanuts (again excellent choice), and cara cara orange vinaigrette and the Spinach Salad with drunken raisins, feta, pickled red onions (no onion breath), shaved parsnips (so refreshing), and honey-rosemary vinaigrette.

Next came a bowl of wild mushroom risotto with gana padano and smoked chilies. The temperature, texture, and flavor was amazing!

The entrees were quite a surprise. The Chickpea Falafel with smoked paprika braised kale and zucchini ras el hangout made my wife reminiscent of childhood flavors and was seasoned nicely. The hangar steak I ordered was replaced by a nice bone-in Ribeye steak atop Aji Amarillo mash potatoes, bourbon glazed baby carrots and cocoa demi. The steak was cooked perfectly tender with a nice crust. I might always eat my steak with chocolate from now on.

For an additional entree we had the Duck Ragout with house-made papardelle, maitakes, oyster mushrooms and a dollop of chive creme fraiche. This reminded us of a stroganoff and was rich and delicious. I have not had handmade pasta this good.

Desserts were complimentary and arrived as 3 separate dishes. The first was a spicy, sweet popcorn with duck fat - off the menu and delivered by the chef. It was light, crunchy, and slightly savory. Then came a Semifroddo homemade chocolate topped with date caramel and mint. I am not normally a fan of chocolate, but this was really great. Finally, a little basket of beignets with a warm caramel dipping sauce to wrap things up - a fine dining version of funnel cakes.

We spent some time complimenting the chef on this upscale dining experience. I hope everyone working at Society will receive the recognition they deserve. Richmond foodies need to know this is much more than just another a club that replaced Lucky Buddha.

“Surprised dining experience for family celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

We made reservations at Society to celebrate my daughter being sworn into the Virginia Bar. We were 4 adults and my 10 month old granddaughter. We were not familiar with this area so my daughter checked the reviews of this restaurant. The reviews were good and the restaurant was was not to far from our hotel.
When we arrived at 5:45pm the restaurant was empty which made us a little concerned. As it turned having the restaurant to ourselves was a major plus especially having a 10 month old with us.
To our surprise the food and service was outstanding!!! The food was top notch and very diverse which made everyone in our party very happy and the service was impeccable. We enjoyed having all the attention and not sharing it with our patrons.
As we were leaving the restaurant started to get busy, we must have be out early compared to other people because of having an infant with us.
