My husband and I are currently driving through Virginia on a leisureley week-long road trip. Last night we were driving through Richmond. We accidentally missed our turn on the north side of the city, and ended up in the not-so-nice southern side of town. We were exhausted, however, and decided to find a place to stay.
We stopped at several hotels in the area. You could not even walk into the lobbies. Instead, you spoke with clerks through windows. Everything looked very seedy. Finally, we came to a Super 8. We've stayed with the hotel chain several times in the past with good experiences.
The desk clerk appeared very friendly. He offered to assist us in bringing in our luggage. Cautious about the area, we asked if our car would safe. "Sure," he replied. "The security and police come by very often since we're next to the airport." This made me even more cautious--did we want to stay some place where the police were so necessary?
There was no elevator, so we took the last room on the first floor. It was a basic room with two double beds. We were so exhausted that we slept in separate beds to have more room. At about 2 AM this morning I awoke to feel something crawling on me. My bed was covered in black bugs. I woke my husband up, and his bed was the same. I took a shower to get the nasty feeling off and we packed up our bags and demanded a refund at the desk. The clerk asked us what kind of bugs they were. I replied, "I don't know. I'm not used to having bugs at home."
They were apologetic and blamed people for bringing pets into the "no pets" hotel. It seems that housekeeping should have noticed the problem, though. We ended up driving all the way to Virginia Beach and getting another hotel there at 6 AM.
So...don't stay here. If you're going to be in Richmond, stay on the northern side of town. It appears much nicer.
