“They just don't build them like this anymore!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

When you first walk in you're greeted by an extremely kind and attentive staff. Then your eyes peer upward and you're blown away by the dome! When you get closer to the check-in desk, to your left, you see one of the most beautiful grand rooms I've ever seen! It is simply massive, classy, grand, and luxurious (but not in an obnoxious way).

Bed was comfortable and the room large. You can't miss with this magnificent hotel.

The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA, is one of America's grand dames of hotels. Thank the heavens that this marvelous edifice was not plowed under for some urban renewal project like so many of our nation's beautiful 4- and 5-star hostelries of the past. From the moment you walk into the place, it is clearly a building to behold. Even though I only spent two nights here, they were perhaps the most delightful and comfortable I have spent in an American hotel. My stay rivaled the times I lodged in some of Europe's finest hotels. This special treat was planned as a celebration of my birthday with my brother. We were both entrance by my delicious birthday dinner enjoyed at the hotel's restaurant. The chef tries to local source as much of the menu as possible (even in winter months when not much grows in Virginia). FYI -- here is a bit of movie trivia connected to The Jefferson: the designers for "Gone With The Wind" were inspired by the hotel's magnificent stairway in their creation of the interior stairs for Miss Scarlett's mansion at "Tara" -- her plantation. Another pleasant feature of the hotel is a small indoor pool that is located within a charmingly decorated hall. Our suite included a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, lovely hardwood furniture, and beds with quality mattresses.

Room Tip: We had a corner room that was part of a turret. This architectural aspect with its curved window gl...

We stayed here for just one night while conducting some business in Richmond. All I can say is that the Jefferson blew me away! The hotel is visually stunning; I don't know any other way to describe it. When you walk down the steps to the Rotunda, it's as if you have entered a time warp. It will literally take your breath away.

The service was impeccable – genuine and gracious. We didn't eat at Lemaire, but we did have a cocktail at the bar and enjoyed our chat with the most amiable bartender.

The Jefferson offered a breakfast and parking package on its website, and we took advantage of it. We breakfasted at TJs, and the food was great. Too much to finish and altogether yummy.

Taking into account the parking and breakfast, I also have to offer kudos to the Jefferson for value. What a great hotel at a more than fair price.

Can't wait until the next time.

We stayed here last week after several disappointing nights on the road [see our reviews of the Mt Washington and Inn at Essex] . The Jefferson reminded us of why we like to travel.Just about everything at the hotel was perfect- the staff , the concierge , the room, the history , the car service and the food .We stayed on one of their packages and while it is not cheap the value is excellent. Anytime you are travelling on I- 95 near Richmond I highly recommend the Jefferson the definition of a superlative hotel. We will be back !

Room Tip: Try for a view of West Frankin but I doubt there is a bad room in the hotel .

When the valet attendents remember your name after just a day at the place, it is a great hotel. All the employees I had contact went out of their way to be extremly friendly and ready to serve as needed. During our stay, we held the rehersal dinner and reception afterwards for our son's and his fiancées wedding. All was exceptionally done. I cannot express how wonderfull the staff was!

There are very few Mobil 5 Diamond hotel in U.S. 17 or so I think. The Jefferson is consistently one of them --- for an array of good reasons.

We've been going to this property for the past 20+ years and it just gets better and better. Our most recent stay, after not having been there for about 2 years, pleasantly surprised us with completely renovated and spotless rooms. Beautiful and totally up-to-date, even featuring a television within the bathroom mirror --- something to be seen to be believed. Of course, the entire staff exudes professionalism and are genuinely eager to help.

The bed and bedding is THE finest we've ever slept in, and the climate controls are virtually silent.

Of course, the architecture of the Jefferson is breathtaking. If you like traditional elegance, wish to imagine Rhett Butler seated in the Rotunda, then the Jefferson is for you.

Further, the new LeMaire is surprisingly affordable, yet still present outstanding 5 star food and beverage.

And let's not forget about the spotless health club/gym, and the beautiful art decor salt water pool.

If in central Virginia, this is the only place to stay. Watch too for special offers.

We stayed one night to celebrate our anniversary and it was superb. We were pleasantly greeted in a warm but proper manner consistence with the elegance of the hotel. Our room was quite large with lovely linens on the comfortable bed and the bathroom was amply stocked with Moulton Brown products. The lobby has a glorious stained glass dome with beautiful moldings and columns reflecting the style of 1895 when it opened. There is a very grand staircase. Dinner in LaMaire was exquisite with a blend of Southern favors and light American cuisine. Unlike so many restaurants that try to be innovative, all the ingredients blend and taste well together. All the staff were well trained and oozed Southern hospitality without the familiarity of 'hi, I'm Jim, your server tonite' which makes me cringe.
The one downside was the inability of room service to deliver a proper cafe latte in the morning. This is the mark of a fine hotel. We travel extensively particularly overseas and stay at the best hotels. I expect a latte to be made with a professional pressurized big machine with one third expresso and two thirds steamed hot milk. After 3 tries I gave up. Perhaps the superb chef in the restaurant should train the breakfast staff how to make a proper cafe latte.
This one flaw is easily rectified with a bit of training.
Overall this is one of the best hotels and I would heartily recommend it to anyone visiting the lovely city of Richmond.

Thank you for allowing The Jefferson to host your anniversary celebration. We were disappointed, however, to hear that our cafe latte prepared by our room service staff did not meet your expectations. Please know that we will address this and will look forward to providing you and other future guests with just the perfect coffee creation.
